I would use it for sharing in my organization. Sharing docs outside your organization is not covered with you BAA by google. So if you want to be HIPAA compliant don’t share your files with the patients. You could send them PDFs but if you don’t have an encrypted email service (google covers emails inside your organization not to patients) it wouldn’t be HIPAA compliant either. You could have the patient sign an electronic communication waiver and email through gmail after.
Is that part of hipaa compliance or just if sharing with patients/colleagues that you’re concerned with?
