Hats off to all the good teachers we've had, specially in the technical fields. I graduated from my local community college's automotive program and we had gems of teachers like yourself. So many basic rules of thumb have been drilled to my head where after 20 years I remember it like it was yesterday. We learned to use inside micrometers and bore gauges but Mr. Norris always said: "learn how to use the simple methods as well". Plastigauge was one of them and I still use it to this day and still learning new things, learning never stops, teachers give you the tools on how to learn.
Retired shop teacher here. Kids LOVE the random analogies, and it was a memory-assist for many, though I found that the "kids who sit at the back of the bus" didn't always remember the theory being taught. I would get a test answer where they would make reference to "a flattened cat" but not be able to explain the correlation to the applied theory. So funny

Improve your arthritis with Moringa powder. A teaspoon full daily with your fav cool drink to wash it down. Also avoid sugars. A natural inflammatory. It doesn't mix well, so I just dump it in my mouth and wash it down. Love your attitude! Students must love you!
B4 plastigage there was shim stock. Tiny strips of varying thickness, and too thick prevented you from turning the crank. '70s tech baby. Oh wait that is what we called Mr Williams. If you messed up in auto shop he would call you baby. For final practical 3 man teams would be called out to pull a motor and rebuild it. He called the whole class, except me. They took off to be the best team. I said Baby? You didn't call my name! He said St.Martin, you and I both know that I could put you in there all by yourself and you would have that engine out, rebuilt, back in and running before the rest of them could get the motor out! I said yeah, but how am I supposed to get a grade? He said, would an A do? Yep. I had a NASCAR mechanic of the year as a stepfather. So I had an edge. And a deep desire to be the best. Ted Haywood was an amazing man. Marine(Golden Glove) helo mech, frmr Jax PD, frmr NASA hyd engineer, and Daytona PITA. Built a 289 pushing 504@9 grand. Black flagged in 68. Earned MOY after that. I learned from the best. Wasn't easy...
Plastigage is good stuff. Way cheaper and easier to use than an inside and an outside micrometer. Probably more accurate too since it actually lives in the space between the bearing and the crankshaft journal.
I challenge anyone to come up with a better story of how plasti-gage works! It’s thoroughly lodged in my memory forever… I’m not sure if I should thank you or not. 😂😂😂
My only issue with PG is it doesn't keep well in Florida. You do what you can. Used it a couple years ago rebuilding a Korean motor. KIA/ Hyundai. Indy grade design, but not build quality. Tight tolerances, like 1.5 thou...
How do you use this with the one time use or torque to yield bolts? Once you have the proper torque on the bolts for the proper fit and you loosen the bolts to check the fit, you have to through the bolts away don't you?
Good question. I would probably use either the old ones, or maybe half-torque the TTY just for the measurement. You're probably not going to get a huge amount of deflection in the assembly between "close to" and "at" the yield point.
You only need to snug it down. No lube, as it has it's own thickness. Pop the cap back off and I use a razor blade to gently skim it off. Maybe not necessary, but it wasn't in the original ingredients list...
@Teach - Maaan... Dude, u were traumatized in ur tender, formative years... Kinda explains a lot..😁 Sidebar - can u do a proper video on the proper use of a telescopic micrometer; to be more specific: measuring out-of-round cylinder bores? When I do it I get different readings at the same spot in the bore - very frustrating. And can you do a vid on piston ring orientation (does it really matter to be 45° from the previous gap)?

Use the old bolts with the plasti-gauge, then the new ones for final installation
