    I've owned 3 - 9090DB's. Still my main receiver. Had it totally restored a few years back. I've never had a problem with any of the DB circuits (knock wood.) "An Important "FYI" for anyone who has one or is looking to get one"... The 9090DB does not like speakers that are "not" rated at 8 ohms. I've learned the hard way. I was running a pair of "OHM Walsh 2's" rated at 6 ohms & blew some fuses & output transistors. Luckily I have a new tech who does great repairs at great prices who took care of me & I can always count on with any of my vintage equipment.

    Fantastic restoration. I'm about pull a trigger on 9090db. The only thing holds me back there is no way to listen to it all I can see is that power is on and no alarm is flashing. Can you share your parts list? That would be soo helpful especially if the list is done by the module/board.

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  4 місяці тому

      The majority of the issues that manifest on the 9090DB are not related to component failure but rather switch wear and less than ideal design choices.
      There are many posts about this model on AudioKarma and some users have shared board level parts lists. I do not publicly share my parts lists.

    I still don’t understand the tone toggle switches. I understand that centered is defeat but I find it hard to hear a difference when changing the position of the toggles. Hard to critically listen while standing at the unit in plane with the speakers. Is there a recommended position that most are using? KEF 104/2 speakers. I’m running a Phase Linear 400 with the 9090DB as preamp.
    Mine was serviced this year and LED upgraded. Within a couple months I noticed uneven lamp dispersion on the left power meter. It occasionally flickers but half of the left meter window is out. Is this more likely an issue with the lamp or the installation? The tech is a 5 hour drive round trip and I’d need to leave it and make that trip twice. I’m assuming this isn’t something I could tackle myself.
    Excellent video by the way. Geared more toward the technically gifted but as a hobbyist, I still learned quite a bit!

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  2 роки тому

      In a well designed piece with all tone controls to zero you should hear very little difference when flipping to and from defeat. An experiment that you can try to better understand the defeat control is turn bass full CCW and treble full CW. Flip the defeat controls and you will most definitely hear the difference when tone controls are bypassed.
      Recommended settings. Start with the tone controls in circuit (not defeated) then rotate then one notch at a time and tune to your liking also don’t forget about loudness. If you listen at very quiet levels most of the time you may really like how the unit sounds with tone controls at 0 and loudness on.
      For LED it is possible that the LEDs do not like the reverse voltage from
      The AC supply and one has failed. I have seen the same issue in one of my units. The customer is dropping it off to have it checked soon. If the LED did indeed fail I will be swapping it to a dual LED same as I use in the indicator positions. Check out my video on 8080 LED installation. That will give you and idea if you would like to tackle it on your own. I would assume not, most difficult lamps to replace are the power meters.

    My sister-in-law has a 9090db. When you power it up the red protector light blinks red and never goes to green. I watched the video (well done) and saw that the resistors in the driver board should be replaced. I will try to locate a technician in my area (outside of Nashville, TN) to fix. If anyone knows someone please let me know. Also while the power was on it made a pop sound and then I smelled something. Wondering if that was a resistor or capacitor burning out? Thoughts???

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  10 місяців тому

      I don’t have one of these in front of my but my recollection is that if you pull the driver board the protector light should go solid green. The input selector has nothing to do with the driver card and should not affect them one way or another.

    Hi. I’ve got one of these that I just inherited from my late bro. A little soiled, but really in pristine condition. Honestly, at first glance I didn’t know what it was it sat there for days while I was clearing out his house. One night I was just sitting there looking at it thinking man that thing looks really nice. I’m gonna see what I can find out about it. 😳😳😳😍. I am not yet sure if I’m gonna keep it and have it fully restored or sell it and hold out for a fair price. All I know is that it does power up but I have not got a pair of speakers to attach to it. Any suggestions as what to do on that front? I really can’t spend much on speakers at this point I really just wanna try it out.

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  2 роки тому +1

      These are the first two steps. 1. Power on with nothing else connected and see if the protect light turns green. If yes, 2. plug in a set of headphones. You may need to purchase an 1/8” to 1/4” adapter but this is much cheaper than buying speakers to try a basic test. A simple pieces of wire attached to the 300 ohm antenna terminals should get you enough signal to pull in local radio

    I have a Sansui 9090DB that has been sitting around for the past 22 years... always wanted to get it restored but cost and being able to find a trustworthy technician has kept me from moving forward with the project. Another amp in my collection is the Kenwood KR 9600 that has the separate "quadraphonic component?", that amp was working just fine so not sure what restoration may be needed? I somehow have collected many other pieces of audio equipment over the years that just take up space in storage, sad to say as I always hoped to listen to a good audio setup.

    I just found you and really enjoy the videos. I have to watch more recent videos, so maybe you use it, but can I ask why you weren’t using your QA401 analyzer over the other one you were using? I also saw a video where you were using one of the Panasonics. I ask because I’m planning on getting either the Q403 or Q404 if it ends up getting released soon. I was considering getting a Panasonic, but at 2-3 times the cost I’ve been told by many that the Q403/Q404 is a real bargain.

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  Рік тому

      I have only used the QA a handful of times. What I have found is that it is more suited for production environments. I prefer being able to grab and turn knobs and buttons rather than manipulating software on a computer. I think it’s main advantage is in plotting frequency response but I have been able to get by so far with the bode plot features in my Siglent scope and signal gen. As a bench technician I don’t want to be using gear that slows down the process but I could see how the QA would be an excellent tool for an engineer.

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  2 роки тому

      The F-2624 is really well documented on Audio Karma, best to go there to verify as there is much more context and discussion which is hard to properly convey in youtube comments. For the FM chip it's not good to rush and replace that. The issue needs to be diagnosed and isolated by a professional. It could be something simple like a burnt out stereo indicator lamp. A good way to check for that is to tune to a strong station and flip from stereo to mono and listen for a distinct change. If no audible change then you may indeed have an issue receiving stereo.

    Hi, quick question. I have a kenwood integrated amplifier with 125 watts per channel in 8 ohms, 350 watts power consumption and 110v. I use an AC voltage regulator rated at 500 watts max. I noticed when loudness is turned on with the amplifier and the volume control is at 8 oclock I hear distortion. I hear the woofer popping, my speakers are rated at 6.3 ohms 150 watts and 88db sensitivity. My question is, does the low power ac voltage regulator causes the distortion? I hope you can answer this. Thanks in advance!

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  2 роки тому

      Hello, there is not enough information here to accurately answer your question. Please clarify why you are using an external voltage regulator. Are you in an area of the world that uses a different AC mains voltage than the device?

    • @doubleblindtest4649

      @@NovaluxStereophonic I live in the Philippines, our main AC is 220v. My Kenwood amplifier is from Japan rated at 110v that's why I use a step down transformer to convert the AC to 110v.

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  2 роки тому

      @@doubleblindtest4649 I do not think your step up transformer would contribute to the distortion. You should take your unit to a professional for diagnosis. If your amp has preout main in jacks a quick step to try to determine the root cause of the failure would be to remove the jumpers and feed the amp section with a different preamp or variable source and feed the pre out to a different amplifier and see if the distortion follows either or both sections.

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  3 роки тому +2

      Yes. All signals run through the Dolby board, even with Dolby control in the off position. If the board is bypassed electronically the tape inputs will no longer work, Best to have the board repinned and any old ribbon style cables swapped if damaged. Apparently some shops have figured out how to bypass it without loss of features other than Dolby but for an experienced tech with the proper tools the Dolby card is completely serviceable. Once the design flaws are addressed this circuit is reliable.

    Why replace capacitors that are not out of spec ? I am of the opinion that if it is still in spec than leave it in. Is there a good reason to replace good caps?

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  3 роки тому +2

      Electrolytic capacitors have a limited lifespan. Some hold up better than others but all will eventually fail. The main contributing factors are time and heat. I primarily perform full restorations for customers that expect the units to run trouble free after restoration. I do occasionally offer break/fix repair for local customers where only replace failed components but shipping cross country and not doing the full recap is a recipe for trouble.
      In short it’s just a matter of preference. If it’s your unit and you are servicing it for yourself only replacing out of spec components is perfectly fine.

      @@stinkenstine The spec sheet for the 9090DB does not give a power rating for 4 ohms but the owners manual indicates the you can read 4 ohm loads on the meter by doubling the output power measurement so we can infer from this that its OK to run a single set of 4 ohm speakers and the amp should be capable of delivering over 200W of power into 4 ohms. The next time that I have a 9090DB in the shop I will try to shoot a video of an output power test on a 4 ohm load to confirm. For your application in A+B mode the amp will be able to deliver about 125W into the combined load, though you may be "better" performance running just one set at a time. A or B. Hope this answers your question.

      Wow! It does answer it. Thanks again for your knowledgeable response. The gentleman that is selling me the unit is a tech and is looking into this as well and his answer is similar to what you are saying as well however, my Ohm F’s impedance is rated at 4/3 Ohms which is odd too me & in that suggestion I should just run one pair however I’m running both pair on my Pioneer SX-1010 & it sounds phenomenal however I could possibly harm the amp in the long run. I listen at low to moderate volume which probably doesn’t hurt the amp much but, I guess it’s not a great idea to be doing this. Again, I really appreciate your help on this as there is literally nothing out there on this topic. A video would be great on this! Thanks 🙏

    Interesting, the 9090 was 137 output and the 9090DB is 153 output 16 more watts. I wonder what a Pioneer SX1250 puts out ? Pioneer advertises it at 160W. but I know it's really more than that.

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  Рік тому

      To meet the FTC rule they specified at 160W for SX-1250. Check out my video on SX-1250 max clipping power to see what it can do on a straight power test.

    Is Sansui the only receiver that has a midrange knob?

    • @NovaluxStereophonic

      There are many receivers with midrange controls from other manufacturers. The Marantz 2270 for example has midrange.

    Been seeing lots of "I want to get my 9090db restored" What happened to " if it is not broken, do not fix it?"

    • @NovaluxStereophonic

      @@choochoocharlie0016 There are certain pieces that require full overhaul of specific circuits to be stable for the long term. This unit has at least 3 major flaws in the original design that if left unaddressed will lead to issues. This is one of the rare exceptions where restoration is preferred over only fixing what is immediately causing issues.

    I found this model in a box as well as some pioneer HPM-1500s that were out for trash for the bulk pickup that happened today. The speakers need to be refoamed, but work otherwise.
    I was able to get sound no issues with the speaker protection, but all of the sudden, there's no sound. I have the RCA terminator plugs in phono 1 & 2's right channel.
    Any ideas as to why the sound just quit out?

    • @erikharrison9707

      PS everything "looks" to be working fine, speaker protection clicks on and stays green.

    • @NovaluxStereophonic
      @NovaluxStereophonic  2 роки тому

      It’s probably something simple like dirty controls. Keep the volume low, make sure the speaker selector is on Speaker A, then rotate the controls and knobs and see if it cuts in and out. That’s where I would start. Anything beyond that requires more advanced Troubleshooting.
