  • Repair a Samil Solar River inverter with a disconnect / connect problem.
    Ends up being the relays, but not a burnt contact, easy fix. This inverter had 7000 KwHrs on it so it obviously worked well enough and a little wear on the contacts threw up this problem.

    Brilliant! Exactly the problem with my unit. After performing SAFE ISOLATION as any electrician should, I was able to repair my Samil TL3000 inverter using the technique shown in the video. 10 of my 16 panels were offline but now they are all running. Those tiny springs are scary though. I had to take extreme care to not lose them in the attic insulation. Thanks for the video.

      Splendid, another unit repaired and saved from scrap. If your inverter is in the loft it needs an external fan blowing over the heat sink, controlled by a plug in time switch. Heat is the killer, cheers

    Many thanks Andy. I had been sitting on this problem for a bit, and was about to call the electrician today when I saw your video. Had to take the unit off the wall to get access to the screws on the side of the switchboard. No fix after cleaning first relay, but joy after giving the second attention (cleaned contacts, closed space). Much appreciated all your tips. working like a gem.

    You're a genius.. followed your advice. Left the inverter on the wall but was very careful to switch off both DC input and Ac output. Had no trouble removing or replacing the screws. Th clear plastic covers over the relays were a bit stubborn. I didn't remove the tiny springs in the relays for fear of losing them. I bent the contact closer together and used a points file to give the contacts a bit of a rub. Hasn't failed since...thanks for your efforts in putting this on youtube.

    Thank you so much Andy. Today my buddy and I were inspired by your video to repair my Samil Inverter, just the way you showed. My "Relay Failure" is gone and I am generating power again! And we had a ball! We were looking at throwing it out, but it is so satisfying to have fixed it ourselves. One hint - a pair of grips, opened wide, were ideal to easily take off the plastic relay covers. Many thanks!

    Your video gave me the gumption to try cleaning the relay/bending contacts as you mentioned. After isolating the "live system", I was able to pop the plastic relay lid (though the plastic catches at the bottom broke off). Five minutes later, the Solar River inverter (which has been down for months) was up and running. I couldn't believe how simple and effective that fix was. Thanks for making me look like a hero to my father in law. He had a quote for $300 for a technician just to turn up. Anyhow, I now have an order for a couple of the relays from Hong Kong in case the contacts get too corroded.

    Can't believe this worked - huge thanks.
    For me, it was the lower of the two relays that (probably) needed bending - there was sparking evidence in the transparent cover - but I did both of them anyway.
    The system came straight back up - we'll see how long it's going to last.
    I was actually hoping the relays might pull straight out and then I could push new ones back in.

    Thank-you so much for this video. One of my clients had a 'Relay Failure' fault on their Samil Power SR2K2TLA1 Inverter. I did precisely what you did here and up the unit came straight into Normal state. She had received quotes for AU$1,000's to replace the inverter, so she was very happy. Wow , your Video is incredible . Thanks so much . My 2Kw Solar River Inverter is only 8 months outside the 5 year warranty and today threw up a "Relay Failure" fault log. It's total output to date is 16,465 KwHrs , ( installed 04/Feb/2014 )
    Thanks to you , I've fixed the problem myself .
    The contacts in BOTH RELAYS were really grubby and quite fried, so I carefully refaced them with an Automotive Points file and some 600 grit sandpaper to provide a good "Contact Point Surface" finish. I also slightly bent the points plate as you describe , to provide a small clearance between the end of the Electromagnet and the moving part which carries the actual points Here's a hint for the teeney weeney springs. Before you try to remove them , put a long loop of cotton through the eye at one end , then , when it pings of into no mans land , you just haul it back again aha.
    Im so pleased you were able to assist. Regards Supaflee. NZ

      Hi, the relay fault is shown when the inverter goes through the boot up process. If there is no life then look elswhere, is the DC getting to the inverter? or is there a fulty connection somewhere, best have the front off, but a 12 Kw will probably be 3 phase so be careful, cheers

    • @michaelbirchall6307
      @michaelbirchall6307 4 роки тому

      @@TheInfoworks Yes it's 3 phase and there is dc getting to it. It's not showing a fault code. The fan kicks in when it has timed down and there are a few relay clicking noises but then it just goes back to timer mode.

    That was an easy fix Andy ! Are these boards using Chinese made relays do you think ? Having to bend a contact like that is pretty poor really. I've never known a relay fail like that personally !!
    The case screw holes being so misaligned isn't great either - I wonder if they have a piece of wood and a g-cramp on the production line :o))) Another inverter working again anyway. whic is good. Dave

    • @TheInfoworks
      @TheInfoworks  7 років тому

      Dave, thanks for the questions, yes they are Zong Chuan, 15 amp. The contact size is great and this inverter has 7000 KwHrs on it, so it worked well for quite some time. One never knows what system it was fitted to, and how many panels. Some installers push inverters too hard and the customer looses on durability. The fix seems to have increased pessure on the contacts to good effect. The case cover is only a problem due to the postition of the screws, the problem being that the seal needs to be compressed. Most inverters the cover is pulled down onto the seal from the front. It's always good to have a few spare units, but because I don't run mine anywhere near their rated power then this spare may well stay where it is. Cheers, Andy

    • @noakeswalker
      @noakeswalker 7 років тому

      The relays might have been soldered to the pcb in a way that softened the plastic and the contacts moved a bit in fairness to the relay maker. As you say, those have done some time without failure already. The case has a seal to compress....ahhh I see, as you say, screwing from the front would have got around that problem. Dave

    Hi Andy, I wonder if you can help... moved in to a house with a PV installation already there. I have a Solar River 1100TL. The other morning I noticed an error code "EEPROM Failure" on the display. Searched the web and it suggested to disconnect PV + and - from DC. So I turned the DC Isolator off and back on after a few seconds. The inverter restarted and normal state resumed. However, I've had to do the same thing again this morning. Do you know how I can permanently fix this? I don't want to be having to go under the stairs every morning to restart the inverter.
    Also, the inverter is now reading a etotal of 9658kwh on its display but my meter is reading 9522kwh ? Is this right?? I'm concerned where it's been in error mode it's not relayed the correct readings back to my meter?

      Hi, some of these errors can be difficult to find. First you should always disconnect the AC before the DC to prevent relay and contact damage. Second I would go through all the connections both AC and DC to to catch any poor contact. Third improve the cooling of your inverter, heat is a major problem and it's very sunny at the moment. Experiment with this and see my video on extending inverter life. Latterly, put a search on Ebay for a spare inverter. It seems the difference between inverter E total and the fits meter is not that great so don't worry about it and see if you can solve the primary problem as the system will not generate with a fault. Subscribed? Cheers

      @@TheInfoworks just subscribed. Thanks for the quick reply. I just went and checked it again and the error was up again so it seems to be getting more frequent. Does the inverter need to be opened to check the AC and DC connections? Sorry it that's a stupid question I have little to no knowledge. Although the inverter is under the stairs it does have quite a bit of space around it to reduce any heat build up. Is there any way I can send you a picture of the set up so you could explain a little further? Kind regards

      Hi, I'm talking here about external AC and DC wiring. How many panels are connected to this inverter? Heat is a problem so an experiment with a fan and time switch may help, see my video on this, you can load a short video (or series of photos) on your channel showing the scenario, cheers

    Just a note regarding the relay, they are a SCL-1-H-DPNO relay by Song Chuan. The 'H' in the model name denotes the contact gap to be 2mm so if you have this fault and decide to clean the contacts, don't forget to set the 2mm gap afterward. This gap is measured between the underside of the contact arm points and the middle prongs of the relay when facing the Samil unit on the wall. Hi, there are 3 screws each side, if it is still difficult after these are removed then warm the edges up with a hair drier to soften the seals. There may be 2 screws under security stickers. cheers

    Great video. I have a Samil River 4000 TL-20 took the screws ok of the sides and top, but the cover refuses to come off even with considerable effort with punches etc.. moves half a screwhole but no further.I was wondering if the seal is stuck and how to unstick it?

    • @TheInfoworks
      @TheInfoworks  4 роки тому

      Anthony, hi, I'm not familiar with the 400 TL but if you are sure all the fixings are removed then maybe the seal has gone hard, try a hot air gun and a bit of educated violence, good luck, cheers

      Sorry should have read the whole thread! the answer was further down. Used hot air and it eventually sucumbed, but was very well stuck down with sealant. Got the model no wrong it was of course a SR4k4TLA1. completely different inside to yours though. My problem was input AC voltage underrange fault voltage and reading 104 volts with the mains input at 245 volts.Nothing obviously faulty to look at. Input AC fuse OK. Could really do with a circuit diagram to go much further though. but suspect its a very heavy paperweight.

      On further investigation took the pcb out ( a lot of screws holding it down) and found the problem on the solder side. Burnt out solder connections to the AC linefilter inductors. Looks like bad solder joints from manufacture. Cleaned them up and resoldered properly including some other suspect solder joints.
      Hopefully it will all work, just have to wait for the sun now!

      Anthony, that's great news and brilliant persistence. Good info as I have several inverters that cannot sense the mains. Further investigation required. It's that lead free solder up to it's tricks again, cheers

      @@TheInfoworks It looked like the inductor enameled wires were not properly de-enamelled before solderflowing so the solder could not get down the through holes resulting in a dry joint. The units are easier to work with than I first thought.

    • @TheInfoworks

      Hi, I assume you have checked that AC is getting to your inverter and that all fuses and trips are all OK. There is a fuse in the inverter and you will have to take the cover off to access it, and it is here that you can check that the AC is available inside. Be careful, subscribed? cheers

      Hi, in that case it will probably be in the AC sensor circuit and I have never had any success with this, there are Solar River inverters on Ebay, otherwise I suggest Solis. It's heat that does the most damage, cheers.

      Hi, what model is it? the relays are sometimes in different parts of the board and may be white or black, they will be there and the tops may be more difficult to remove,. On the auroras I have to use a dremel to cut the tops off, cheers

But the thing is I don’t know even a thing about this I could have called you If I had your number. That would have been easy for me. Could you please give me your number and few minutes from your schedule which could really help me saving some good money. Cheers waiting for your reply

      Rick, these soumd like the same units as used in the eversolar inverter I fixed where I fitted larger relays. The original relays were Song Chuan, DPDT (dual pole dual throw) 894 2CHA2 - F- C. I found some Finder units that had the same diamensions and coil resistance, Finder type 40.52 mini PCB, check out the videos in the my grid inverter play list: ua-cam.com/video/dlYATJYB6RU/v-deo.html. Please give thumbs up, subscribe and buy a copy of my book: Wind and Solar Electricity, cheers
