  • My new (and first) hive, all abuzz with hundreds of little bees with pointy little stingers, arrived the day before the country went into a COVID-19 lock-down. The bees carried on like they knew nothing about the pandemic; everyone else closed shop. I had a super to install, a deep-seated fear of bees, no smoker, and no way of getting hold of one. Time to improvise...

That's a surprisingly solid design. I wasn't expecting to see that when I searched for a DIY smoker. Nice.

I didn't. Each end is in a recess and it's always under at least a little bit of compression. One year later and it hasn't come loose yet...

very useful guide.thanks a lot and i jave a little doubt that bellow has one way valve on one side(inlet) and does it has the out let valve at the oulet of the bellow which is the connection between bellow and the container.i would like to know so please answer the question.thanks a lot for the informative video that u have shared.

Lakshman! There is no valve between the bellows and the fire chamber. This means that air can be sucked into the bellows from the fire chamber, which is a risk: burning embers can be sucked into the bellows. The inlet valve on the bellows reduces this risk by providing an alternative passage for air to enter the bellows. To further reduce the risk, the outlet pipe from the bellows is not connected to the fire chamber. Instead there is a small gap between the end of the pipe and the hole in the fire chamber. This substantially reduces the amount of air that can be sucked out of the chamber because it is drawn from all around the end of the pipe. Importantly, this arrangement does not significantly compromise airflow into the fire chamber when the bellows are pumped.
