    I am a woman in tech. I hate the idea of quotas and when people say we need more women in tech. A woman should be hired based on her skills, not a characteristic that has nothing to do with the job.
    If specific companies or individuals that are discriminating against women, then that needs to be addressed. However, that does not seem to be the case at large.
    It would also be ridiculous to think we could fairly fill the positions 50/50 with men and women since men and women do not equally pursue tech careers. On average, women pursue tech related careers less often than men, which I do not believe is a problem that needs to be solved.

    • @Primalxbeast
      @Primalxbeast 11 місяців тому +2

      Not having enough evidence for a conviction doesn't prove that it was a false charge.
      Not having enough evidence to prove that someone did do something isn't proof that they didn't do it.
      Millions of men get away with SA because of how hard it is to prove, compared to a handful who get falsely charged.
      You would have to prove that the accusation was false to justify locking up the person who made the accusation or millions of victims of SA would be put in prison just for speaking out when they get assaulted.
      If you had your way, it would be open season on SAing people because they would be more likely to go to prison than the person who attacked them because of the presumption of innocence for the attacker in our court system.

    Back in 1992 I lost a job because of Affirmative action. The company I worked for was going to be facing a huge loss in their profit margin and so they had to down size. Two people were hired after I was, but One was a Jewish Male and the other a Hispanic Female. Myself being white was the safe person to let go. Being let go because of the color of your skin plays with your mind, then in 1996 I found out that I have a touch of Chickasaw Indian in me and still I always say I'm white. I fully understand having these conferences for women as someone who was married to a tech guy (I'm a widow) and know that only 26% of the tech industry is women and they have to be in the top 3% of their schooling to even be looked at that these conferences can make a different, but you are so right we need to take of sex and race off applications and go on merit. I'm in the UK. My sister works with special needs children. Many of tne black kids at her school are very disruptive in class, but if anyone tries to discipline them or even just mention that their behaviour is unacceptable, the accusation of racism is thrown out. Any teacher or other staff member faced with such an accusation is liable to be suspended while the accusation is Investigated and is in danger of losing their job. These investigations are frequently no more than "show trials" because the school as a whole doesn't want to also be called racist.
    So the teachers almost always back down and the unacceptable behaviour goes unpunished.

    Another women in tech here. Men seem to forget the reason why women conferences etc are a thing in women in STEM because oftern there is only 2-3 women per class in further education, that means for every 2-3 women theres around 25 men competing for the same spots. So saying women are "taking their spots" if the women weren't there, it would be another 3 men in the room competing. Women want to be encouraged into the room because they offer a different perspective and can provide the same work effort/ideas etc as a man.
    To me, conferences are a safe place where women on women can talk about their professions without men in the room or the conversation, which is very rare that we never get when we work in the industry. It's nice to bounce ideas off each other, share connections and make girlfriends whichout having to worry about mens egos in the mix.
    Tech isn't like a manual labour job or the military, thats a whole different bag.
    I was the only women in my old company for 5 years, trying to get women through the door in a purely men enviroment was "hard" they felt that women didnt get along with the laid back vibe and "banter".
    I never came forward at work with my ideas or suggestions because I would be shut down, by a man, then the next session my idea would suddenly be theirs and it would be accepted and implemented. I have rarely had this working alongside a women/men enviroment, if anything they concur and add to your suggestion then you work on that suggestion together.
    I left making them an all men company, which makes them look bad. Joined another company, where on my teams I have 3 other women, one is my manager. Same job, same industry and the vibe and the banter is still there, its just we are more professional and efficent, i feel like my ideas and constructive critism is listened to and actioned upon. I love it there.
