- Every man in this is so obnoxious I just had to make this. I’m actually impressed with how much I had to cut out. Also, I don’t have much more context for this show. The ending is extremely uncomfortable.
And sorry I don’t know what to do with Starkid right now (I do what I want!), my hyperfixation is Good Omens/Michael Sheen/David Tennant. That just means I spontaneously made this at 1 am.

I actually don't think that it is transphobic. I feel like we are supposed to laugh at the men, and none of them seem disgusted by her. They are just way too interested in her business. The way that they explain how she is trapped in a man's body and was in a psychiatric hospital (or received psychiatric care) because of how much distress it caused her was actually very accurate. I think she is being portrayed as most women were in older shows and the men are comedic relief. Sure the humor is a bit outdated, but I don't think it's meant to be transphobic. As a trans person I think the representation isn't bad considering the time period.
I agree that this is good portrayal, at least for its time. But there is a scene, not featured here, in which Davina "seduces" a man and it is implied how horrified he is when he finds out that she is trans. Him being attracted to her is played as a punishment for his character since it's humiliating for him - and that is transphobic
The scene is supposed to be uncomfortable because the basis for its humor is pure transphobia. Having a problem with someone's genitals because they don't match cisnormativity is transphobic. Not sure how this is up for discussion, trans person here as well. I've read what the episode is about and apparently Davina is there to help some other girl. While the rest of the episode is transphobic and invasive to trans people's bodies to such a painful degree, that scene ends up being somewhat okay? But this is not how the average men will interpret the scene and this kind of message is the foundation for many transphobic issues nowadays.

Holy crap, David Tennant can make you fall in love with every character he plays. Even with some of the transphobic parts, Davina is still portrayed as a beautiful and loveable character.

The thing I always liked about the problematic scenes was that Rab pretty quickly adapts to Davina as a woman and has personal growth because of it, and considering him being the lead of the series was a pretty big deal back then.

Of course we'd want more accurate representations on media today where actresses, despite them being either cis or trans get to play transgender women, but considering the period of time it was filmed, this is actually considerably a good representation
Insisting that only trans actors can play trans characters is a great way to stop people from putting trans characters in films and TV, since there are so few famous trans actors and an actor's popularity is an important part of marketing. Producers will say "well we can't find a movie star who is trans, and we'll get roasted if we cast a cis actor in the role, so lets just do something safer instead".
It shouldn't matter either way. Tom Hanks wasn't an astronaut but he still smashed it in Apollo 13.
@@peacemaster8117 people are hardly putting trans characters in anything ANYWAY, and before recently they have only been used in a negative light, or they don't get a happy ending. There are certainly a wide variety of trans actors who haven't gotten the chance to perform due to the transphobia on and off screen as well. I'm not sure hiring cis men to play trans women is going to help with putting more trans people on screen.
This is real weird. I'm not attracted to David Tenant at all, but Davina is definitely kinda hitting something for me. And I'm like having a weird dichotomy where I'm like "That's David Tenant," but also like "Yeah but Davina looks really hot and kinda cute," and then "Yeah but that's David Tenant," and then just back and forth.

I am a trans man, so I don’t really know the experience of a trans women, but I think some parts of this episode are a good representation of the kind of people who don’t really understand transidentity .
So even if it was transphobic, and the humour wasn’t really "mastered”, I think it’s a good thing to watch to understand our society .

Based on the longer clip I saw a decade ago, they used the sexist dude's surprise and horror at Davina not having had bottom surgery as the punchline. Which there are a lot of issues around. But Davina is portrayed surprisingly sympathetic for the 90s, the decade that gave us the infamous Ace Ventura transphobia scene.
