@@LowEndLobster I know you said you wouldn't use the overdrive channel, but it really sounds great and you might draw a larger audience if you just used it once per demo. That is exactly my impression as well. To my ears - more presence, better lows and highs with the Orange. Ampeg seems veiled, less transparent, less exciting.
Dudester. You are becoming an industry leader. A UA-cam Titan, baby. So inspiring. So professional. I am a rock jammer in LA. Guitar, bass, vx . I love them both. The Ampeg for sure sounds like an Ampeg. So you cannot go wrong with the change. I will say the Orange is more transparent than the Ampeg.
I personally think the Orange amp sounds dramatically better. Fuller and more present. Ampeg sounds thin and hollow, almost brittle. Just my two cents, looking forward to more content either way. Thanks for what you do!
It's a 12 inch driver on the Orange, and a 10inch on the Ampeg! This would explain for the thinner sound. Both are very nice amps and i own a Orange C-50, i play overdriven heavy metal/metal which the Crush-50 really relishes🤘
The Rockets are a nice competitor for the Fender Rumbles. I compared both and ended up going with a Rumble because feature-wise, they were very similar, but you were paying a 10%+ fee for the Ampeg name. Regardless, definitely a solid upgrade from the Orange.
@@revolverocelot7099 that's a tough call. The ampeg does a great job getting a sound similar to a big ass ampeg rig, but the fender can also get a lot of what I like out ampegs, and I like the 4 band EQ. It let's me get more than JUST the ampeg tone (which I characterize as pretty aggressive). I just tried a peavey max 150 and will be returning it because it's too clean and doesn't add that nice "amp" sound. More like a clean DI sound. Where as I liked both the rumble and rocket bass but would probably go with the rumble. It was actually fun to play through which I think is more important than nailing a singular "sound". Definitely try both if you haven't.
Awesome!! I’ve always been an Ampeg fanboy! I have multiple ampeg rigs! And love them all! To me it’s the holy grail of bass tone! Stingrays and Ampeg are a perfect match!! Love your classic!! Did you shave? Lol
The P bass and Ampeg combo definitely a great combination. Can't help but think though that the Orange might be more of an advantage for someone who hasn't quite mastered their dynamics of touch. It's much more forgiving for someone who really likes to crank on those strings, Where the Ampeg requires a more finesse style of player.
I bought an RB110 for home practice and recording, and I have to say it's the nicest "bedroom tone" amp I've ever heard. I'm looking at trying out the RB210 with my band. I just wish the XLR out wasn't post master volume.
Nice! 100% agreed on the XLR. The nice thing about the orange was that you had the speaker volume and gain separated. I could run the speaker as loud or as quiet as I want and the line out wouldn't be impacted. I found a nice setting with the ampeg for my recordings though. Volume at 11 o clock and EQ at noon.
It makes more sense to be post master. If it wasn't, the tone of the di signal wouldn't match through tone of the Amp. To do this pre master it would be a very expensive option.
Kinda seems like the orange has either more gain at the same setting, or a wider frequency range. The amped doesn’t just sound quieter. It sounds more…. “Vintage “ I’m really a fan of brite tones. But used to rock a amped SVT-7 and loved it. Not familiar with that rocket amp, but I bet if you get the ultra hi and ultra lo switches engaged I’d love it.
That's the compression. It aggressively brings things up but also squishes the low end a lot. I've already filmed a lot of videos (not out yet) with the new setup and am very happy!
The 110 doesn't have Ultra Hi or Ultra Low switches, but I think the larger ones (112 and up) do have them. I have them on a different Ampeg I use for gigging, I don't care for them though. Too much mid scoop.
I bought one of these about 6 months ago and absolutely love it. I tend to keep everything set to 12 o'clock except for the grit which I have set at 9 o'clock and it sounds absolutely fantastic for a relatively cheap amp.
Frankly they sound very similar to me, probably because my speakers. But Ampeg at 10:41 sounds a lot different and a lot solid than Orange at 10:09. Seems the replacement is a positive!
Very nice demo and practice amp. When I first started in the late 60s I had a Vox Essex bass amp. Then Fender Bassman, then Ampeg SVT stack then GK amps which have been superb for me for 20 years. Thanks for the demo.
Both amps sound great. I mean that the instruments sound like themselves instead of each instrument sounding “like the amp.” Credit going to you, Sir, a great player is able to make almost any decent amp sound good. One of the details I really love is a defeat-able horn/tweeter. I may not consider one or both of these amps for that reason, but they sound great anyway. Congrats.
Will have to come back to this video on headphones. On my phone the new amp sounds like it has less low end than the Orange. I know phones aren’t good speaker platforms but lots of people watch videos on their phones nonetheless. If the Ampeg has more lows, it may be lacking some low mids that come through smaller speakers. I definitely understand the desire to eliminate the built-in compression. I would suggest playing some test tones through the amp and analyzing the signal through a spectrum analyzer so you can get an idea of the amps EQ curves and dial in your reference tone. Anyway, keep on being awesome.
Running a bass directly into the instrument input of the audio interface would give the truest uncolored sound of the bass. Comparing the direct signal to the amp signal would really show what the amp is adding to the sound. Another comparison video perhaps 😃 ?
Nice amp. I actually picked up the 1x15 version of this amp at a great price on a trade in. Sounds great! After a while I bypassed (removed ) preamp and amp section and using like a cab with my Tone Hammer 500. Love it!
Ampeg to my ears, using Bose headphones, sounded warmer and deeper, on the low end, slightly scooped in the mids. I really like the sound of the Rickenbacker.
Right off the bat, the Ampeg is doing more (low?)mid range. Works great for P type basses. But the jazz bases sounded just as good out of the orange. (as ‘hot’ as you think it sounded, that ‘white sire v7 vin’ still sounded fantastic.. it really does that Marcus tone)
Great playing / lines. Sorry to be negative but I feel in this demo that the Orange is much more open and lively sounding. The Ampeg sounds a tad wooly and muted to me….in every case with every different bass you used. The Ampeg sounds like it would be great for reggae with that low end bias. I’m not so sure it will be as good for general bass demo’s. I’m assuming that you are using the DI / Line out so it won’t be EQ’able.
Ampeg is great. tho it doesn't represent the clarity of the instruments. it's got its own character. you would be better with EBS or Bergantino..yes I know they no close to the budget price BUT ,,BIG,, but they do not color sound ..anyway love the Siressss :)
I really like the amp comparison. It gives you an idea of what the bass sounds like thru different rigs. I also like how you played some different riffs to demo.
Ampeg all the way. Same studio amp I use. I have yet to hear an Orange bass amp I like. Bought that same D5 bass btw, exceptional, except a few high frets...nothing I can't fix.
You're clearly better at recording than me. I had that interface as well as the Scarlett and the Harmony. I ended up with the Clarett +2. Seems like I would've been ok with either interface if I knew how to record. I think you'll be fine, going forward. I was an early sub and still watch, on the regular. Great job sir!
Scarlett and Clarett entry level models are BS… they are scam intended at newbies, no offense. I mean… just have a look at reviews all over the net. Any other brand will offer a better product at that price point (Steinberg, Tascam, Audient, etc.). I went for Steinberg because I wanted USB C interface and Cubase.
@Nono Robo that's the thing about reviews. Every brand seems to have strong and weak points. I'm definitely a newbie at real recording. I just record my personal bass practice with audio and video and an occasional cover. If I was into production, I know I would need more. Fortunately, it's just me and a Beatbuddy. I'll look into the brands that you mentioned, since I'm always open to trying new gear.
For those doing research. I returned the Clarett yesterday. I couldn't justify keeping it when Lobster is getting better sound quality with units costing a third of the price. This proves that expensive gear is useless if you don't know what you're doing.
I liked the Ampeg much better, it's warmer, deeper and much more dynamic sounding. However, I did like the Orange better with the fretless but overall I glad you've made the change. Looking forward to future reviews with the new setuo!
I can hear more background noises, like the A/C or the PC fans blowing. This isn't that bad, as I should hear the hiss/buzz from single coils better. I don't always hear them in you previous videos. The audio is clearer also. With the amps, the RB-110 is noticeably warmer/fatter sounding. The highs are more rounded and controlled. I can also hear the difference in your dynamics, without them being squished by the onboard compressor. UA-cam's bandwidth compression is bad enough.
Thanks Jack! I have a loud ass gas furnace for the house behind the wall, that often gets picked up and bugs me so much lol. Spring can't come soon enough LOL
I've been using an Accugroove Tri112L cab for the better part of a decade. Got a Aguilar Tone Hammer 350 head that I'm not crazy about, may swap that out but that's what I currently use.
I always found your demos flat sounding. I thought it was something UA-cam was doing. I think you should go a step further and use a JDI. It'll take the amp character out of the equation entirely and it's a piece of equipment most bassist are familiar with
I have the RB112 I use in my home studio and carried a little Rumble40 for small gigs... it finally died and couldn't decide if I wanted another or an RB110 as I love my 112. You sold me, just ordered an RB100! Sounds great for what I need it for!
Bro, that Legend of Zelda song brought on a smile 😁 And it just sounded so perfect with that fretless bass. That thing needs a Hylian Shield (or even wooden Kokiri shield) pickguard on it 🤘
they all sounded good through either amp. very nice. why not the svt cl mini. with 2x10 cab. ,me svt 7 pro. with a 4x10 neo cab at 4 ohms. ,on wheels. (1,000 watts). have a good day.
Hello! Idk if you looked inside the cab, but do you know what material it's made out of? I can't find the info on it anywhere, wonder if it's a wooden cabinet or some kind of synthetic material? I think the fender rumble 40 cab is real wood
Thanks Rev! We've handed over compression duties to the new interface which does a much better job. I have the fast setting engaged for the bass signal and it's been working stupendously!
The Ampeg has more mid clarity, that said, the Orange isn't far behind, but it's pretty obvious most musicman basses will match the Orange for its deeper low end, yet again it's quite subjective to each one's likes...
When are we gonna get the distortion demos or even octave effects? that said, between the 2 amps, the speakers don't really sound that much different to my ear,
Great choice! 🦞 I love the Rocket series, at the point that I'm trying to save some cash for buying one of these outstanding little monsters! Tried one once just as a random thing to let time pass by, then I felt in love with it...
the sound card is excellent but I prefer the orange because it has a very transparent input and I absolutely do not feel the compression at low frequencies, while I find the scooped middle of the ampeg annoying, a very cheap sound
The orange had a little dirt on it. I never play clean but in demos I prefer what the ampeg is bringing to the table. I bet the ampeg could get dangerously close to the orange sound. Great upgrade imo.
Ampeg is cleaner and clearer to the actual bass tone. Volume/presence is lower in this vid. Orange has a fuller ready to play / record processed sound and more bottom end
I think the Rocket is a massive improvement. I would have liked to hear a "soapbar" humbucker with roundwounds, but the Stingray is pretty close to that right? Great video as always.
Straight DI, micing adds another variable and I try to keep the variables to a minimum. We're going XLR out from the amp into the UA Volt, and have the 'fast' compression setting engaged on the interface (WAY better than the compression in the Orange)
@@LowEndLobster Hypercardioid placed close and at the edge of the voice coil will eliminate lots of room noise and boominess. Beyerdynamic M88 is the perfect kind of mic.
One thing that might also improve the audio in your videos is running your bass signal through a Cab Simulator/Impulse Response. It would help tame some of the unintentional string noise here and there, and provide a more natural sound for your videos. It would be more akin to miking up the combo amp itself.
That doesn't make sense. He's reviewing an amp. A real Amp. If he used cab modeling and IR...thus would be a totally misleading review. To really show this amp, it needs to be as raw and unprocessed as possible.
@@nichreynolds7712 For the sake of this video, sure, that makes sense, but I intended this comment for future videos where the amp is beside the point. The reason I make this point is because the signal we are hearing in the video does not sound at all like the amp does in the room because Lobster is simply taking the DI from the amp head. The sound being physically transmitted by the speaker of the attached cabinet in the room affects the frequency response of the signal; some frequencies are going to be made more or less prominent because of the speaker. This is the reason why the same bass with the same amp will sound different depending on which cabinet of speakers the amp is sending it’s load into. It’s the reason why 15 inch speakers and 10 inch speakers sound different, and why one manufacturer’s speaker of size A will be different from a different manufacturer’s speaker of size A. The signal we are hearing in the video bypasses all frequency shaping from a speaker, which means that it is going to be harsher to the ear than that of a signal shaped by a speaker (because the speakers in bass cabs often cut high frequencies to focus on lower ones). In short; using a cab sim or IR would make the bass sound more like it does to him in the room.
Glad this channel came up in my feed. This is a really good demonstration of the “orange” sound compared to the “ampeg” sound. Well done. When I play through bias on my iPad I have a patch that has both orange and Ampeg.
I mean it's not my main amp, but the RB-110 is a great testing platform for these videos. I have an Aguilar Tone Hammer (not crazy about it) 350 head and an Accugroove Tri112L cab that I 've had for a bit over a decade. My goal here is to provide a consistent testing platform to demonstrate how these basses will sound for the many hobbyists and bedroom players out there. A lot of videos out there have really nice expensive amp rigs, and then folks buy these basses and think "ok, this sounds nothing like the video..." Not here :)
Ha, I’m just tone hammering ya. 😁. Same here, I have what a consider a budget amp for playing at home (Hartke HD150) and keep my SVT 50th rig with HSVT810E at the practice space. Anyways thanks for putting the content together. Sounds great and looking forward to the Stingray mod video.
I've had several Ampeg amps over the years. They always sounded good but unfortunately always had problems. It's been frustrating. And they weren't all "budget" amps. The most recent was a BA-110 that died after about 2 years. I hope you've got a good one. These days I stay away from them.
Man that is unfortunate for sure! I’ve owned my 8x10 for probably 15 yrs and have beat it to hell and back and never not one issue also one of my BA-115 practices amps I’ve had probably 11 yrs and not one issue. I did buy another BA-115 from a buddy and it took water damage from hurricane Ian we just had a few months ago so that sucks but normally Ampeg is a very tough amp
@@nichreynolds7712 It's funny you say that because it was fine here at home for working on songs. I got lazy and brought it to band rehearsal one time because I didn't feel like carrying my bigger amp. It sounded bad when I pushed it to keep up with the drums and died a short time later.
@@sd3falco yea it can’t handle all that, maybe if it was just for a back rig and you were running through a real PA then maybe, but I wouldn’t take it out of the house
Interesting how for some instruments the difference is barely there, while for others it's night-and-day. I mean, *NOW* I get why you love that MTD... Wow!
Thank you! YES! This gave us a much better representation of the MTD for sure. I LOOOOVE that bass and I'll definitely be revisiting it with this amp soon!
Ampeg does sound a bit clearer, the Orange definitely compresses more which sounds like it adds a bit more sustain, so in short comparison it almost sounds like the Ampeg cuts off some of the sustain, but it seems like it's just due to the lack of that heavy compression. The Orange kind of just sounds "better" in some ways but I feel like that's just because it has more midrange which adds to the perceived loudness, and we all know louder is better. But I think overall the Ampeg is the right choice because it's clearer, cleaner, deeper and you can't go wrong with the Ampeg sound.
I prefer the Orange. To me, the Ampeg just sounds a bit flat in comparison. It might be differences in compression or volume level, or something else that is recording-related, but to me the Orange has more of what I like.
I’ve liked the tone of the Ampeg Rocket combo amps but I’m surprised the Fender Rumble 40 with a 10” speaker cost $229 while this Ampeg rb110 cost $299. Essentially the direct competitor.
Big improvement, but the XLR outs of amps will never be the cleanest signal. A unit like the RNDI or BAE red DI would be better quality signal into your VOLT interface. But hey the XLR out of the Ampeg is surely quite good. Cool improvement to your set up :)
Very nice change! More articulate, deeper lows, plus the lack of compression sounds cleaner, it's not just compression on the Orange it's the way it compresses, Huge improvement! Thank you!

What's your main amp when you're playing in a band setting?
I've been using an Accugroove Tri112L cab for the better part of a decade. Got a Aguilar Tone Hammer 350 head that I'm not crazy about, may swap that out but that's what I currently use.
I always found your demos flat sounding. I thought it was something UA-cam was doing. I think you should go a step further and use a JDI. It'll take the amp character out of the equation entirely and it's a piece of equipment most bassist are familiar with
DIs sound dry and boring though
@@ileutur6863 bad dis sound flat and boring. There is a reason that the JDI is the standard go to. It's like the sm57 of the bass world
Recently bought a Rocket Bass 112. The tonal variety it can get is amazing. My one real complaint is that it doesn't put out a whole lot of volume.
AMP video!
You're so vain, you probably think this vidya's about you!
Nice, new series. Soo, pedal series when? Us gear heads can´t wait to see. + nice to see gear for us , bed room bass players.
Thank you for putting this together. I think it sounds great through headphones at my desk. Thank you for the explanation of the changes.
Will you not have to rerecord all videos up till now? 😉
That'll be half the fun!
I have the RB112 I use in my home studio and carried a little Rumble40 for small gigs... it finally died and couldn't decide if I wanted another or an RB110 as I love my 112. You sold me, just ordered an RB100! Sounds great for what I need it for!
Thanks
Have you experienced any type of airy hiss when the RB110's DI is connected/recorded into your DAW?
Any hiss from the amp's built-in speaker?
Bro, that Legend of Zelda song brought on a smile 😁 And it just sounded so perfect with that fretless bass. That thing needs a Hylian Shield (or even wooden Kokiri shield) pickguard on it 🤘
fantastic.
they all sounded good through either amp. very nice. why not the svt cl mini. with 2x10 cab. ,me svt 7 pro. with a 4x10 neo cab at 4 ohms. ,on wheels. (1,000 watts). have a good day.
To me the orange sounded better with the MTD and Stingray and the rest sounded better with the Ampeg :)
Hello! Idk if you looked inside the cab, but do you know what material it's made out of? I can't find the info on it anywhere, wonder if it's a wooden cabinet or some kind of synthetic material? I think the fender rumble 40 cab is real wood
Both sound great I suppose it comes down personal choice. The Forrest Song brings back great memories.
I bought several similar Ampegs. They’re terrible quality. Not the rocket series however. Regardless I have not much faith in Ampeg
I liked the Ampeg better on all basses bar the Rickenbacker. However, compression is my friend!!!
Finally amps!!!!!!!
Was the orange a 12” speaker? If so how did you feel about the low end with the BA110 vs the 12” Orange. Thanks!
IMO the Ampeg is more transparent. Now your basses won't so sound similar. No disrespect intended. Sweet.
do try de300 head,, 2 x10 deep cab,,, both by kustom... keep geetar 4 feet away ...from thhis hybrid amp
Probably unpopular opinion but prefered the Orange amp to the Ampeg. Excellent choice of zelda song!
I think the Orange sounds alot better. The Ampeg sounds small.
Is what we hear straight DI or DI plus mic'd cabinet?
Straight DI, micing adds another variable and I try to keep the variables to a minimum. We're going XLR out from the amp into the UA Volt, and have the 'fast' compression setting engaged on the interface (WAY better than the compression in the Orange)
@@LowEndLobster Hypercardioid placed close and at the edge of the voice coil will eliminate lots of room noise and boominess. Beyerdynamic M88 is the perfect kind of mic.
Can you make a video review about that spectacular music man stingray with the flamed neck?
I liked the sound better of the orange amp it seemed more alive and brighter
Awesome improvement. Next you gotta work on your sexy bass faces 😉
I thought the Rocket sounded better, but why did you choose the Rocket over the Fender Rumble?
I think the Orange was brighter, it had more presence.
I am evidently in the minority here but I thought the Ampeg sounded thin and too bright with all the basses
All those nice basses and you’re using a budget amp?
Hopefully new ownership with Yamaha is helping to iron out the kinks.
The ba series wre bedroom amps. Meant for low volume practice. Take them to a band situation and push them they breakdown.
Just turn it up to 10 and go metal and see if we fry the Amp !,
Orange sounds much better. It has warmer tone.
The Ampeg definitely has a nicer tone than the Orange.
The Ampeg is tamer the orange is more aggressive in the high mids
I think the Ampeg is tighter and smoother around the edges , The Orange still sounds pretty good but the Ampeg is a step above it.
Ok ....... i hope you READ COMMENTS OR ARE YOU ONE OF THOSE FAKE TUBERS? HUMM FIRST OFF...ALL THEM BASSES AND YOU DONT GOT A >>>>>>> REAL
Classic is better ;)
Ah man I wanted to hear the distortion circuit
Yes, I agree: the Ampeg sounds better. But ... what happened to the plaid pants???
Thank you! LOL They're in the wash hahaha. Did not plan out my laundry well XD
Great video and digging the new gear! Also have you lost weight? The beard is trimmed sure but still mighty ha! All the best Lobster!
Thank you! I have! :)
@@LowEndLobster Good for you bud! Best wishes to your health and prosperity of the channel!
I prefer the Orange. To me, the Ampeg just sounds a bit flat in comparison. It might be differences in compression or volume level, or something else that is recording-related, but to me the Orange has more of what I like.
You forgot your kimono and your yoko ono hairdo.
I sense a disturbance in the Beard Force
I’ve liked the tone of the Ampeg Rocket combo amps but I’m surprised the Fender Rumble 40 with a 10” speaker cost $229 while this Ampeg rb110 cost $299. Essentially the direct competitor.
Much better sound. It’s crunchier without being harsh…and it handles the low end with better warmth and definition.
Thanks Interloper! I agree. I've done a bunch of videos (not released yet) and have been very pleased with the results using this amp. It's a keeper!
That slap sound delicius
Big improvement, but the XLR outs of amps will never be the cleanest signal.
A unit like the RNDI or BAE red DI would be better quality signal into your VOLT interface.
But hey the XLR out of the Ampeg is surely quite good.
Cool improvement to your set up :)
