I have read many short stories by many authors. Flannery O'Connor's story 'A Good Man is Hard to Find' is the most powerful story I have ever read. I am an Englishman with a deep love of American short stories. At its best, American literature has a vastness, a panoramic scope, that I find intoxicating, truthful and wise.
Poe was born in Boston and was taken in by a Richmond, Va family when his mother died there. He considered himself a Virginian all his life. People think his personality was the same drear as his work, which is not true. His LIFE was gothic though.
I think the takeaway here is "gothic" doesn't always mean dark and spooky or associated with ghosts or vampires. There's more to it than just what you see on the surface.
