Your parents aren't wrong! Here's a reality check, I went to a 4 year University and out of the 30 people who were in my 3D animation class which was about 40 students, only 3 still work on side projects but haven't made it in the industry including myself. We all graduated and I still work at a restaurant, Others work at retail stores while were trying to break in the industry. Everyone wants to be an animator but very little to none make it in the industry or decide to pursue a different career. It's great to have hope and not give up, but its also great to be real about the situation and what it's like after graduating with a Computer Animation Degree.

@@dannymorales787 From what I've heard Studios don't require a degree to land a job there. All that matters is how good your demo reel is. Only problem with college animation education is it's too generalized, and studios want people who are specialized in one area. (animating,modeling,rigging,rendering..etc.) I've heard from lot's of professional animators at top studios that the college route is not the way to go now adays but instead self-learning online or online courses like Animation Mentor/ianimate/ etc... So, sounds like your classmates demo reels weren't that good and didn't push hard enough to get a better one. In fact most people I know who work in the industry dropped out of college and went the online route. So Tl;Dr - Just an animation degree is obviously not enough to land you a job, but instead hard work and a good demo reel

To everyone reading this what Tangent Cowboy just mentioned It’s 100% right... 95% of the time. There’s also the idea that many people don’t realise just how hard the animation craft is to master. So the amount of dedication, obsessing and hard work can overwhelm most. But please do preserver...if you make it you are in for a career that will last you a lifetime.

I just want to add onto the ego part. If you want to be confident in yourself, you have to accept yourself. Whether you win or totally fail, you have to tell yourself that you accept the fact that you are who you are with these ups and downs and as long as you can accept that and show yourself kindness instead of shame, you'll have great confidence in yourself, because at the end of the day, no matter how many rejections you face, at least you are there to accept you and love yourself.

the burnout is real, i can say, was super excited when i first got hired and became and animator but eventually you keep doing the same thing over and over and over especially if you dont work for a studio. there was a time i didnt learn anything new for about 5 months, only thing that keeps me going is personal projects that forces me to adopt new techniques or plugs in/scripts. And of course i do those personal projects in my spare time, off hours.

@@isaiahnorwood9529 In my opinion a degree is not necessary, only a strong portfolio, and a portfolio is easier to make if you go to a school with a program specifically for animation. Some animation programs can be 12 months, 2 years, or even 4 years with a degree. I've also seen some robust curriculums online, like from Aaron Blaise or Toniko Pontoja, for a fraction of the price, if you are very self motivated. A counterpoint argument I have heard recently is that a degree can make it easier to move for work to different countries. Hope that gives some food for thought!

But sometimes you have to trust yourself, and trust your dream. My dream is to animate films or television programs that encourage healthy child development. The work I do to make a living has nothing to with animation and I have to try and do my animation work in my free time. I am the audience as well. I make animation in a way that I like them my self as well! and thats also how I know a animation is done when I look at it myself and im genuinly happy and enjoy to watch on a loop. I'm from Portugal and here is kinda impossible to work as an animator, I don't know if I risk myself to move to another country and stop studying science, I'm 16 btw and made my 1 big decision that leads to an university, I was really confused because no one tells you about how things work they just see animation as a bad career choice, unstable and not grated

But everyone's situation is different so make sure you do what's best for you.

As much as I would like to agree, as that’s the way it should be. That is not always the case. In many situations you are seen as a cog in a big machine so even if your work excels it’s still seen as “you are just doing what they paid you to do” no recognition given.

I would like to know the reasons for many animators going to many studios through their careers. I have seen many animators leaving studios like Disney and Pixar, that many people consider dream jobs. I wonder if most of them do it for economical reasons, creative reasons or just looking for a new challenge.

Hey. Loving your video and the things you talk say about the reality of an animator. I know it's hard to be good at animation, and drawing. I get that.
I'm struggling right now to what I wanna do. I'm 18, in a community college, and I trying to be good at drawing and somewhat do animation in the future with some 3D modeling too. It's getting hard right now since my drawing skill suck and I only have my Laptop to do some basic modeling, but can't do any major renders. I want to be an animator and a 3D artist too. There are so many doubts in my mind that have been pushing me down and I don't know how long I can do it.
Honestly, I'm not really good at math, somewhat decent in science, and other subjects I just lose interests, but with drawing and animation from other people, it's amazing and cool. I want to do what, I really do, but I've never had a dream about animating and modeling or anything really. Since I was young I've never taken an interest. I'm slowing losing my mind and frightened that I might not do anything in the future. I am afraid. Sorry for the long comment. I'm afraid that it might be too late for me to learn drawing, animating, and 3D modeling. I just hope I can change how I am. I really do.

    • @harveynewman
      @harveynewman  4 роки тому

Fundamentally drawing is the basis of Animation, so if you love drawing keep going until you are ready to take the plunge into Animation. Ultimately is up to you to believe in your dream and making it happen, so keep strong, things will happen as long as you persevere and work hard.

I've been animating for a bit over a year now and I love it. So. Much. I'm absolutely fascinated by it!! But... I am really scared that, if I were to persue animation as a career, I would fall out of love with it. I have animated as a freelancer and in my free time, working on personal projects. And it was sometimes SOO hard to motivate myself to work on the freelance stuff when I'm not 100% passionate about the concept I am working with and animating.... so I wonder... should I persue a professional animation/art career, draw and create all day and then come home to maybe be able to work on personal projects if I have the energy left to look at a screen for the rest of the day... Or should I rather persue a different career that does not entail drawing all day and then be able to be creative in my off time since I don't come home from an artistic job that demands a lot of my creative energy...
I don't know if I gor the point across but yeah... I can't get this out of my head...

I have a question about what it takes to become an animator for make your own animation series, because when I was young I always wanted to make my own animation series, but I’m a bit afraid of my self and my life of what step should it take to make a animation series? Do I need a specific degree for 2D animation, should I work for independent freelancer to produce on my own or should I find animation studio to do it? Does it require money to study in college or some place? Because I just wanted to know the step or what risk may be ahead so I should be stressing myself?

I love working behind the scenes, my arts that I posted are from my anon account but I'm afraid since I have no hands on experience in arts field nor animation. I'm worried if I take major in animation ppl will criticize my lack of skills.

I don’t think they will. After all we are all in the same boat, animation is tough as nails doesn’t matter if you’re great in the arts craft or not. ;)

Idk. I dont have any main interest, except for making and creating things. That's what brought me to graphic designing, and I'm thinking of continuing it with animation, I mean animation seems pretty useful and neccesary in today's world, why does it seem like its not? I feel like I'm doing something useless and inefficient.

I’ve been wanting to do animation, but the idea of having to be good at physics is deterring me. How much coursework did you have to take on physics to complete your degree? Also, is there more to the technical side than being able to draw? Thanks for the great content. Very insightful.

    • @harveynewman

Hey Derrick. Thanks for watching man. And I had to study no physics, for games that’s normally handled by the engine and it’s people in code and script that handle that. Animators only handle the art of animating a character convincingly by either shooting motion capture or using handkey. In regards to being able to draw...it helps with your eye for animation when it comes to posing. But it’s not essential. Hope that helps brother.

Because animation is so hard, is it better to start in illustration to gain transferable skills that'll make pursuing animation less daunting? Assuming 2D animation is less difficult than 3D, should the path be illustration, 2D, then 3D?

Its' funny how we view the word "ego", in modern times. It, actually, means "I" (as in "myself") in Latin and in Greek. But, in English, unfortunately, the word means an inflated concept of oneself or an exaggerated self-confidence.

I am glad I saw this video. Cause I was wondering wether or not I wanted to keep pursuing animation and art, as I’m becoming less confident with my animations, cause despite the fact I’ve been doing animations for a year now, I still feel like my animations are still the same even after 5 months, maybe it’s because I didn’t study animation much or I’m just too lazy to keep a consistent way of animating. And only recently did I realise I shouldn’t push my self too hard (I keep making big projects for for no reason), and it’s making me burnt out.
This video helped me get my confidence back for animation, and thank you :>.
Also.. to the people reading this. When you have fun animating or doing something, you enjoy the process, and you will feel pleasure and satisfaction from doing it. Anyways. Have a nice day and I wish you good luck on your animation journey.

Thanks a million for the great comment Raiya. And I'm glad this video has helped you in your journey, I really am. This animation career is most likely the biggest marathon you'll have to endure so as you mentioned enjoying it and being in the moment instead of living in the future is absolutely the way to go. After all, this career will last you a lifetime so why rush.
Wishing you all the very best in your animation journey and stay in touch
