Unlike TV shows where a 30 min show is only 21 minutes long, Wood Whisperer 30 min videos are thirty minutes (well almost) of CONTENT!. Way to go Mark. Keep 'em coming! I certainly hope that you can sell the rights to the manufacturer for inclusion in their instructional material. I learned a LOT here today!
I purchsed a drill press mortiser and have used it for some time. Wish I had found this excellent video before. Well explained, it addresses all the issues that arise. Well shot with clear instructions on use and maintenance of the machine.
Marc, thank you for showing the sharpening cones. I generally just use them 'til they're too beat up, toss them, buy a new one because I had no idea how best to handle that internal surface conditioning. Nice. Thanks!!! Can't believe I went this long without knowing that. Hah! I really only ever use 1/4 and 1/2" chisels and bits, so it hasn't been a big issue thus far.
To help with friction " my boss" would always have us use a bee's wax bar. Every 3rd or 4th hole you had to stop and slap a little on the chisel. it only took a few seconds and it made it much much easier to pull out and it did make the chisel last longer
Every sail boat in the 60's -70's had teak louvered doors, and we used a hollow chisel mortiser to cut 1/4" squale holes for those louvered doors. I must have punched 100,000 square holes during that time, one hole at a time. each set of stiles had to be layed out right and left sides, the holes were cut on an angle so louver blades would slightly over lap.It was a very time consuming job. I think though the glue up of the doors was the most time consuming part. Glad that part of my life is over ! we got good with the cone shaped sharpening stone too, because teak is abrasive and carries silica sand from the rivers it floats in before harvesting.Sometime youd see sparks when running it through the trable saw. I think greenlee still makes a quality drill set.
Excellent video. I bought a second hand mortise press yesterday with no instructions. It’s been about 30 years since I last used one, but this video was really helpful and pleasant to watch also. 10 out of 10.
Excellent video. Been waiting for a decent 2nd hand chisel mortiser to come my way for several years. It finally happened today, so thought I'd brush up on it's set up and use before picking it up tomorrow. Great thing is, my new (to me) unit has all of the attributes Mark highlights. Looking forward to getting into it. Thanks a bunch.
I think personally, the best tool I've seen for making perfect repeatable mortise AND tenons is Matthias Wandel's Pantorouter. Not to mention it works horizontally allowing you to use any size stock.
Great video Mark... you can easily see the effort you had to put into it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I just don't get why there is always a small percentage of people that can give a video like this a downvote? Abstain sure, but downvote?
Some people might be downvoting because the video is sponsored. Some might disagree with the basic premise of the hollow chisel mortiser. They might find that routers make a much cleaner mortise and with a decent jig are pretty easy to use. Or maybe they are handtool zealots. Personally, I think it was a great video about the hollow chisel mortiser, and on that basis I would upvote. However, from my experience with my benchtop HCM, I'm not that impressed. I find it to be kind of slow and the mortise quality isn't that good. Just my experience with a little one. Oh, and some people just downvote everything, I think. Look at the ratio of up to down. That's more useful as a metric.
Cool video, I have a small machine but have not needed it. However I have a project coming up I will need it for. After watching this I feel I will not have any trouble. Thanks
Hi Mark, I have a bench top model that I bought from one of our cheap supermarkets and it was less than £50 in cost. It work well enough for what I want to do but as you will realize it hasn't any of the moving top or table. I also have the panterrounter plans from Matthias and that has a movable table using two sets of draw slides, I made one for the mortise machine but I had to double up on the draw slides so that the pressure from the chisel part did not crush the slides, it works so well that I am going to make one for my drill press as well.
This press has worked like a charm for my projects ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with. This was an excellent purchase for $40!!
@jawadsaadi The only reason I can see it being a problem is that fact that you'll need really long bits. The chuck on the mortise is up above the part that holds the chisels. So you need fairly long bits to extend far enough so that you have some room to work. And the longer the bit, the more runout.
I build a type of bed that has thirty six pickets. I went from trying dowels, to router made mortise and tenons, but I switched to a mortiser and it makes a world of difference. The big problem I have is controlling thw wood chips, there is no real easy way to vacuum them away. I actually ended up using a blower versus a vacuum to get chips away from chisel.
@ibdavidc to be honest, I have never used one before. But from what I have heard from many folks who own them, they can be quite finicky. That's not to say you can get good results. You'll just have to work harder to make sure the fence is set up properly and in perfect alignment with the chisel. The fences and handles on drill presses were not designed for this type of work, so everything is going to be a bit of a compromise.
@kt14328 But you'll still get some side deflection that way. That's why I like to plunge where I have support on all sides. Not saying one way is more correct than another. That's just my personal preference.
Honestly, the world of hollow chisels/bits isn't quite like what we're used to with chisels and planes. There really isn't a super high grade set that I can refer you to. Most companies sell sets under their own brand name and you might find some off brands on Amazon. Also check out Lee Valley. I think they have a pretty decent set that is worth spending a few extra bucks on.
thanks Mark just got a hella Morrison and you gave me some great advice love your work and your videos keep up the good work and .......F.... the trolls .we need more great videos of yours
Excellent video I like this machine wonderful job I am from India Tamil Nadu I think this machine not available India because I not see this machine I need this one machine possible delivery to India please inform me
My 6 yo son thinks that MJ fall schtick was the funniest thing. He keeps playing back. I lick using a strop to remove the bur. It prevents removing any more metal swarf.
@ibdavidc I bought the Delta 17-924. I tried to use it a few times on oak and didn't like it at all. That was probably because I didn't do anything to the bits and just tried using them out of the box. NOT a good idea. But, I still didn't like it. With that said, if you still think it is something you want to try, message me. I have one that I would sell you for a very good price! haha
Enter 'Hybrid Pantorouter' into UA-cam search and you will see a palm router based kit that will make both the the mortice and tenon joint. Like all aspect of using woodworking kit., safety and understanding the capabilities and limits of your equipment is a necessary part of the job. I think Kuldeep Singh - Indian, although living now in Japan cam supply the kit based on a design by Matthias Wandel, also on UA-cam. Regards, George
At 9:13, shouldn't you be plunging the chisel and seeing how it moves relative to the square? The line of motion is more important than the flatness of that small piece of metal (which can and often does have a slight built-in taper, to reduce friction).
alguém saberia me dizer se da para usar esta máquina para fazer apenas furos, sem a peça para ficar quadrado? usar apenas como uma furadeira simples? obrigado
I share the same comments with Mr. Robert Sullivan. Do you also go through other wood working machines the same way? I'm interested in buying some of the machines. Rana
Do you still have the powermatic 720hd chisel mortiser? I'm looking at buying one second hand. What is the advantage of a moving head over a moving table?
@materiasacra Didn't Norm spend at least 20 seconds at the beginning of every show reminding us to wear safety glasses, and you don't get much older in woodworking shows than that. :)
Even though you have the MJ glove going and know all the moves, I think there is much more Snoop Dogg (or Lion or whatever) in this video. You say chisel, I hear shizzle my nizzle. You Sir are the gangsta worker of wood. Word out
So, I've been looking at the cone shaped sharpeners - they all seem to be for 1/2" and smaller chisels. Any source on tooling to sharpen hollow chisels larger than 1/2"?

Outstanding teaching video! Every facet was not glossed over or skirted, but addressed head-on, explanations were clear and concise! Thank you!

This is a very helpful video on a mortise machine. I need one and my budget says it needs to be a preowned mortiser. Thanks!
Thanks for the tips! I got a drill press version of one of these 20 years ago along with a drill press and now I finally know how to use it properly 🙂
Excellent video. I bought a second hand mortise press yesterday with no instructions. It’s been about 30 years since I last used one, but this video was really helpful and pleasant to watch also. 10 out of 10.
You are a great teacher. If I had you in high school, I am sure I'd do way better. Thanks for the vid.
thank you mate, very informative and very helpful for my college work.

Just trolls with nothing better to do.

Please refresh rate how much what your company email
Great tip about using a card scraper to set the chisel / drill relationship. Thanks

@afsecaira I use large flat diamond plates. DMT makes some nice ones. Just rub them together until the stone is nice and clean looking.
As usual, great presentation, explanation, and overall production. Thanks Mark.
Just bought my first morticer. Great advise. Many thanks.
With the conical sharpener, I think you could lock the cone into the quill of a drill press and spin that by hand to avoid any wobble.
Your videos are excellent.
Hello Marc!
If you want to clean up the bottoms of your mortice you can use a Sokosari Nomi - Japanese Bottom Cleaning Chisel They are superb!
A Nice class of this technology... Thanks. Big hug from Brasil Said Choucair

Very comprehensive and informative video. Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos Mark!
Great review. I’m moving to a larger shop and updating my equipment. I will be adding several powermatic tools.
It’s literally a drill press with a encased chuck and the mortising bit, you can buy the bit and use your drill press if you have a good floor model.
@jawadsaadi The only reason I can see it being a problem is that fact that you'll need really long bits. The chuck on the mortise is up above the part that holds the chisels. So you need fairly long bits to extend far enough so that you have some room to work. And the longer the bit, the more runout.
Everything I wanted to know about hollow chisel mortisers but were too afraid to ask, many thanks, awesome video.
Excellent. Thank you.
Mark,
If you make your two end cuts first the end will be square. Then you can make cuts one chisel width for easier chip removal.
I build a type of bed that has thirty six pickets. I went from trying dowels, to router made mortise and tenons, but I switched to a mortiser and it makes a world of difference. Amazing

The Wood Whisperer हमको यह मशीन चाहिए हमें क्या करना होगा
How much price indea
I like the design of this mortiser.
Great video as always.
Well done. Thank you.
Superbly detailed and well explained. Thanks!
@TheWoodWhisperer Congrats!!! A little shop sweeper, or at least that is what my kids do for me! Who needs dust collection, just have another kid.
@kt14328 But you'll still get some side deflection that way. That's why I like to plunge where I have support on all sides. Not saying one way is more correct than another. That's just my personal preference.
i found the video great could you do one on therouter table because i am lossed with all the different ones out their
Excellent guidance, thanks
oh cool! I'll have to check that out. Thanks.

I have 1/4"- 1" CMT nice bits, great container to keep bits safe.
Great great video, Muy bueno señor..Saludos
, 20 year imdoing this job but nothing change why
But have you now gone to the Green machine that starts with F and D and makes round edged holes. ?
Awesome video, always wondered how these work.
Great video. Thanks for sharing
@smfield we have a little one on the way so I think I might be in good shape for keeping him/her entertained. :)
thanks Mark just got a hella Morrison and you gave me some great advice love your work and your videos keep up the good work and .......F.... the trolls .we need more great videos of yours
Thanks for an excellent video.

Excellent video I like this machine wonderful job I am from India Tamil Nadu I think this machine not available India because I not see this machine I need this one machine possible delivery to India please inform me
Nope. You need a special adapter. But they don't have the greatest reputation although some folks have used them successfully.
Excellent video!
Machine price details information please
Very well prepare, Salute!
Rockler, Woodcraft, and Amazon all have mortisers and replacement chisels.
My 6 yo son thinks that MJ fall schtick was the funniest thing. He keeps playing back. I lick using a strop to remove the bur. It prevents removing any more metal swarf.
The roughened interior of the mortise will have a larger surface area to carry glue than a smooth one.
Good point. You can expect an extra 2-3 pounds of extra holding power from that joint
@siebert12 you can, but those kits are known for being incredibly fussy and difficult to work with.
wonderful video - thanks so much
great advice. Thanks for uploading this
From where I should buy this
need a good second handed mortise machine in Connecticut,
Hi Marc. A good video. Do you still use your mortiser since you have a Festool Domino?
Muy bueno
Can I ask where you get the sharpening device with the changeable lead pins from
any chance you can do the same type of video with a bench top model?
Why though? The whole process is exactly the same.
Скажите, как эта машина в работе?
@ibdavidc I bought the Delta 17-924. I tried to use it a few times on oak and didn't like it at all. Do you still use your powermatic floor model mortiser?
thanks woody
so nice
Hi I have a delta monetizing machine do you know how to get the bushing out

What else can this machine do other than making mortises?
Awesome video.
@95jamesg Probably not without some kind of adapter.
I want this machine how to order I'm plz phone number
@smokes00 Im sorry but I don't completely understand the question Smokes.
At 9:13, shouldn't you be plunging the chisel and seeing how it moves relative to the square? The line of motion is more important than the flatness of that small piece of metal (which can and often does have a slight built-in taper, to reduce friction).
I find that that “Schmutz” at the bottom of the mortise is a great place to hide extra glue.
So damn good, thanks mate
alguém saberia me dizer se da para usar esta máquina para fazer apenas furos, sem a peça para ficar quadrado? usar apenas como uma furadeira simples? obrigado
Can you mount these sharpening cones on a drill press to keep them copletely vertical?
I share the same comments with Mr. Robert Sullivan. Do you also go through other wood working machines the same way? I'm interested in buying some of the machines. Rana
It was an excellent singing by sizzane
Do you still have the powermatic 720hd chisel mortiser? I'm looking at buying one second hand. What is the advantage of a moving head over a moving table?
Great as Always! Any reason why the Hollow Chisel Mortiser can't be the fully fledged drill press as well?
Hey Mark, now I can never be happy with my bench top Jet... agghhhh
@materiasacra Didn't Norm spend at least 20 seconds at the beginning of every show reminding us to wear safety glasses, and you don't get much older in woodworking shows than that. :)
Kaha ke ho aap
Can I use Square Hole Saw Auger Drill Bit Mortising Chisel Auger Drill Bit on a normal drill?
Even though you have the MJ glove going and know all the moves, I think there is much more Snoop Dogg (or Lion or whatever) in this video. You say chisel, I hear shizzle my nizzle. You Sir are the gangsta worker of wood. Word out
Could you recommend a good cabinet mount mortiser? Love your videos and expertise!
@Yaakov763 a background music site. I'll have to try to remember the link for you.
So, I've been looking at the cone shaped sharpeners - they all seem to be for 1/2" and smaller chisels. Any source on tooling to sharpen hollow chisels larger than 1/2"?
