Cheers, Jon 💗 Family is a treasure. We were just talking over dinner how some people today are ashamed to be called “grandma” or “grandpa” because it makes them feel old. What a tragedy! It’s an honor for anyone to live a life long & blessed enough to see children & grandchildren

Glad you were able to incorporate the old North wall in your rehab. Having that piece of history included makes this project even more special. If Doomsday is coming (and it surely might!), what better place to be than at Uncle Dan's. Forge ahead, I am waiting with great anticipation!

I'm really pulling for you getting the stink out of that wall! The scary part is you won't really know until the whole place is enclosed... but I'm sure you've thought of that. What if you seal it with shellac? Shoot, the stench of shellac might even overpower the years of rat-stink! :-)
Anyway, really pulling for you all and enjoying your channel!

It’s so true-big gamble on that north wall. But we desperately wanted to save some original history. We’ll see if it comes back to bite us 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks for your wonderful comment! It’s all an adventure

You might consider wool soaked in borax to seal around doors and windows. It was done similarly to corking wooden boats. Another is rock wool for the wall cavities it will help keep mice and insects out. An is old as dirt an doesn't itch.

That is brilliant & I’ve never heard of that one-sounds like a perfect pioneer solution. Totally in keeping with our whole philosophy on this project. I’m definitely doing this idea too 🙌🏻 Thank you! How did you learn these great ideas?!

Make sure to let it lay dry before twisting it into thicknesses you need. Use a dual chisel to tap it in.

Hi Yall!, Love your reno! - if you dont want any meeses to set up rehome into your cabin - spray some water mixed with a goodly few drops of Peppermint/spearmint essential oils - you can also add Euycalyptus and or Tea-Tree as well for extra measure - the rodents CANNOT STAND the odour of mint in particular, but also the stong fresh scents of tea tree and Eucalypt also ravage their olefactory system, overloading with the scent - its repulsive to them and repellent indeed! Any in a 20 yard area will scarper and not come back until it has subsided - which is usually a good six months in an exposed location like yours, and then repeat is a simple 'repeat the process' to reinvigorate the fragrance - and thusly the repellent potencies - this is the most humane and also easy method to drive mice out and keep them away - I swear by it! It will be ideal in your underfloor space as well to keep any burrowers from coming thru and up into ....BUUUUT - if in case you do find any returnees in the stone work or walls - you can also push into any cracks, crevices and slots you find Aluminum foil! - Push into the gaps and they cannot enter - they cannot chew it as it gives a horrible feeling in the mouth, ( and especailly if their noses touch it), like that static type shock you get if you touch a battery to your tongue - so again, they cannot get past it unlike a wire mesh they can chew thru , or wooden boards they can burrow thru - these two things will keep them out and repelled for sure! enjoy the wonderful scented walls too!!! Also a good idea to plant mint around the house edges along with outher strongly scented herbs like tumbling thymes and sages - you can grow those out of gaps in the stone work too, also blocking the cavity from unwanted freinds - and they will love the position and reward you with fantstic groweth and obviously a nice source of cooking herb on your literal doorsteps.
All combined...no meese, mouse, mice or moosies!!! ( or rattas too!)

Did you spray the sealer inside the wall? Works best when it is applied to the side with the funk

    • @Montana_Ranch_Rescue

Yes definitely-I pulled back some of the boards and got inside. I didn’t pull back all of ‘em though, so it probably won’t work as well.

Plant mint around the house it will keep most mice and insects. Add thyme and other herbs to help. Most will repel insects.

The quality is really good, but you can definitely tell you were scraping together anything and everything to get this video long enough. There's a ton of recapping, showing the same stuff being done multiple times throughout the video. I found myself skipping over most of it. Less recapping, because if we're watching we've likely seen the videos before and don't want to watch yet another History or Discovery channel reality show that recaps literally for half of the episode. Show some more farming stuff if you need more filler. That's what's taking up the time, then that's probably more interesting than force feeding us stuff we've already seen. (I'm a farmer, so I'd find it interesting haha.) Also, that quick scouting of the abandoned homestead for the table a while ago was a nice addition.

PS. I agree on that episode being a bit repetitive. Check out our latest episode-“Lost Tunnel”-no repetition there 😆 A bear shows up at the house as all the new windows go in + we explore a train tunnel on the farm buried since WW1. No farming, but tons of action 😉 Hope you stick with us.
