I was hit by a chilling thought while watching him play The Riff-Raff: I hope Morse is immortal, because if the world were to lose him, his music would never be heard live again because nobody could play it.
Steve is possibly the most "complete" guitarist there is out there. By "complete" I mean he can play any style, including proper classical, but more importantly he actually mixes it in his playing. Unbelievable.
Phenomenal & unique guitarist. Mastery is the ability to take a common tool & make it your own in such a way that everyone knows it is you & nobody else can quite duplicate what it is you do.
I will take this venue setting over a huge concert venue any day, it’s like Steve is playing in my local bar. Which I did see this tour when he came through my town, in a very small club.
I've seen the Dregs and the Steve Morse band play in small and medium sized clubs, and it's by far the best way to see them, although it could get a little loud in a smaller place. The SPL's were definitely pushing it a bit in one particular 180 seat club!
I have been to see Steve Morse more times than I can count at this point and each time sat in amazement at how good he truly is. I saw him quite a few times in San Juan Capistrano at The Coachhouse, So Cal.
At 12:00 he plays "OLD WORLD" off of the Dregs of the Earth album. This is just a stunningly cool piece - totally unique style of composition and arrangement for solo guitar. I read somewhere that Pat Metheny spoke very highly of this era of Steve's solo acoustic work. I think this is the only place on UA-cam with this particular tune. Bravo Mr. Morse!
Northern Lights...if you listen to it and let him take your mind, will break your heart playin that beautiful song and make you feel a so sad and melancholic...arrrrgggggggg :´(
It's funny, back then everyone was paranoid about cameras in the audience. Nowadays with cell phones in the crowd, who cares. It's a new American tradition. Great acoustic set.Riff Raff is so much harder than I imagined. Such a different side of a brilliant musician and a great American band. Dixie Dregs.
Extraordinary performance and arrangements. Interesting comments below. Andy Harman is right- no one else will be able to play these tunes, a little like Paganini in his day.
Ummm no lol! He won the best guitarist award multiple years in Guitar Player magazine in the 80s. Buster B. Jones on the other hand could take that title.
THe Dregs just played Chicago, and I missed em. Saw the Dixie Dregs in Madison, Wisconsin (1981-ish), and Steve In San Francisco some years ago (2000?)
super nice guy, fantastic guitar player, beautiful music - who could ask for more. :) thanks for sharing! (btw. I'm desperately looking for steve morse acoustic live recordings from the guitar-trio tour with McLauglin/DiMeola/DeLucia)
Steve, for me, is the better guitar player ever, in any styles...eve if others guitar players are great Steve is just close to the perfection...some people say "perfection do not exist" but to get a result like this , how many hours, daysn moths , years !!!to practriceHe is the best on acoustic and with electric guitar, Steve's technic with pick or fingers are jusrt awsome...he had a perfect control of the sound he wants...on acoustic his right hand is always moving from neck to bridge...middle etc... Steve is a wondeful human being with a guitar technic of a Terminator !!!
Odd how unknown Steve is. Guitar players yes but most non-musicians have never heard of him, as opposed to, say, Neil Young and other rock celebrities...
I don't believe this was recorded in 1990. There was a brief time during that period when Steve cut his hair and worked as a commercial airplane pilot. He rebounded with his first solo album that year. I saw Steve in concert several times. He performed this exact same solo break in 1986 or 1987. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. Regardless, it's a great video by the world's greatest guitarist.
This recording date is absolutely accurate. I filmed it, and labeled the tape immediately. Until Oct. 1989, this venue had been a movie theatre for a decade, so it could not possibly have been shot prior to that date.
You might be this good. You are right. Even in his 60s and dealing with a degenerative wrist injury, Steve continues to practice 4 to 6 hours each day, even days with a concert. People are born with a gift, but practice and total devotion separate the good from the greats.
so I've known Steve since a very long time but never really got to hear anything from the Dregs. any suggestions to start with?? I guess I'm a Dixie Dregs virgin LOOOL
steven romero I agree - start with Dregs of The Earth. The solo on Hereafter is absolutely perfect. Great slide on Twigg's approved. And Old World ? well I'm Still trying to learn it . . . give me another 37 years - I Might have it hahahaha.
+BaBa Booey TOTALLY agree...It was LP that band was touring in support of, in Oct 1980, when I accidentally stumbled into Dreg's gig...I LOVE the other Dregs LPs ( especially What If with Odyssy and Night Meets Light, but Dregs Of The Earth wins...
@@mattroggenkamp6717 "Cruise Missile" is from Steve's first post-Dregs record, "the Introduction". If you're thinking of "Cruise Control", that's from the "Unsung Heroes" record by the Dregs.
Steve was never very video, or even audio, friendly. For that matter, the few times I was around him, he came across as very arrogant. That said, he's a master on guitar, and I was lucky to get this much footage before he told his tech to have my camera removed from the building. Too bad, because the set he did later with Aquarium Rescue Unit was over the top. He and Jimmy Herring made quite the combo.
Marije Essink As someone who's hung out back stage (as a guest of other bands), my comments above Steve being arrogant was definitely from up close, personal experience. Maybe he's changed, but that was my experience in the 90s.
I'm sorry you feel that way. I didn't know him well, but have met him a few times and I personally got a different impression. I do know at times, he expressed what seemed to be disappointment about his music not being popular. You may know he was actually an airline pilot for a few years...
Yes. He's not as bad as some are, but he's not the ultimately friendly, down to earth guy that everyone says he is. I also know that from personal experience over SEVERAL occasions. I also get the fact that you can't be "on" all the time, but a few of the run in's I had with him (and I was actually doing him favors) he was not "down to earth" and all that jazz...
“Picture This” is probably one of the most beautiful guitar pieces ever written , imo !!! ❤️🔥🎸🎶
The Riff Raff is something no one else could have composed. Leaves me speechless everytime.
Steve Morse is Fantastic musician!

I don't know anyone close if you count all the styles he's mastered.
Different gente, but Danny Gatton comes to my mind as versatile
@@anthonynichols3678 Steve Howe.
Well, him and Pat Metheny, but I give Pat the edge just by a hair.
Both cool hair@@Strato13
Thanks for sharing this beautiful pearl
Phenomenal & unique guitarist. Mastery is the ability to take a common tool & make it your own in such a way that everyone knows it is you & nobody else can quite duplicate what it is you do.
there are a handful of true guitar geniuses out there... and then there's steve morse!!!
I knew Steve back when he had a basement band at age 11. He is a veritable genius and the hardest worker you will find.
The difference between Steve and everyone else is that he can play their material, but they can’t play his…
The difference is he can compose music and they cant!
A guitar hero of all times. Hands down man\m/
Steve Morse is the Chuck Norris of GUITAR!

Just came upon this. Fantastic!
Steve is a treasure in so many ways.
This might sound stupid but I am proud to be an American watching this man play guitar.
it sounds ok ) I'm proud to be Russian watching Andrey Korolev play (highly recommend)
When I heard him play "taking in the view" I cried my eyes out!

Old World is one of my faves. And Pat and Steve went to school together.
How cool! I absolutely love Steve Morse. He's amazing ❤
Always great! Saw them(the dregs) at least 10 times growing up in Savannah and he was always great!!
I can't stop watching this. Over and over. Thank God you recorded this fantastic period of Morse's repertoire.
Steve is probably one of the best guitarists and I have been following him since the dregs. His brother is outstanding as well.
Brother???
Thanks for posting this!
Can't get enough of the great Steve Morse.
This is the best Steve Morse acoustic video on UA-cam. Thanks for posting!!
Northern Lights...if you listen to it and let him take your mind, will break your heart playin that beautiful song and make you feel a so sad and melancholic...arrrrgggggggg :´(
In an interview, Steve said that Acoustic sets are the toughest because ANY mistakes stick out.
He has also said - his chickin' pickin' songs like Pride of the Farm is hard to play live b/c of the same reason . . .
we worship great musicians
great musicians worship Bach
greatest player/musician walking the planet...great vid thx for this

You can thank Mr Morse for the lack of the solo. He had the video camera shut down mid-set.
i would like to see steve vai or joe satriani doing this beautiful and complex pieces of music.
What's the name of the second piece he played? Absolutely gorgeous. This sad beauty factor.
Picture This
His first track reminds me a little at Willy Astor's 'Nautilus'
somebody is rocking a Peavey amp up there.... we call'em Mississippi Marshalls down round here.....
I had a dream : ELMP ... Emerson Lake Morse and Palmer !

You could sell your soul to satan and still never be this good.
no, just strict practice for 14 hours/day for at least 20 years (no internet, tv, social media, and no fooling around)
and you will be this good

@Kilo Mintoni _Who in the hell does that?_
Steve Morse. The man's heart is as big as all of outdoors, and it shows in his playing.
??? = Old World, from the Dregs of the Earth album. hope this is helpful
Just a different class from the rest. Untouchable! Hope he can dig into jazz a bit more tho...
he didnt have to play that bass note with his thumb but he does .cuz he can

He most definitely is not arrogant, he just really dislikes bootlegs....

Depends on what those run ins were about, and if his behavior was justified or not, there's always two sides to every story...
