I was responding to a post on Camus derived from his "Myth of Sisyphus". I thought myself bright when I wrote that Camus was basically morality or happiness for the obtuse. A sort of how to for bureaucrats.
I then realized or wondered, aren't we all obtuse? Isn't what we don't know controlling what we do, or SHOULD BE controlling what we do? Isn't ignorance the "ought" of morality more than ethics.
Consciousness? Why does the "bird sit on the nest"? Why are you only that smart? Why aren't you smarter?
In the military there are 3 classifications: classified, need to know, and secret. I think there are 3 types of consciousness, maybe more, but which consciousness is best? The one that has access to the classified, the secret or the need to know? Could it be that the best consciousness is the need to know one? That, in fact, the one with all the secret information is the one least equipped by evolution to adapt?
Why would eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil be responsible for man's Fall? Did it increase our secret clearance and increase our consciousness? Or did it relegate us to the need to know aisle and decrease our consciousness?
Nietszche said what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. In this world what you don't know makes it easier to live with yourself.
Consciousnes also give us the "understanding", which provides a clear evolutionary advantage. Understanding how the environment works give us a fuzzy intuition to predict other individuals behaviour and how and when to act, well beyond the capabilities of a non concious specie.
I think when it comes to consciousness and attention or focus, there are a few things we need to remember.
While we can be completely focused on some, it can have our full attention.
It is possible, however, to do something a little different.
For example, you can be driving from one place to another, changing gears, watching for the stop light at a crossing, reading road signs, etc, and even checking out the view around you.
You can, though, then reach your destination and not remember the journey.
If we look at it from the point if view of sleep, there is a point between being awake and sleep where you become unconscious.
You can then have a dream, taking in what the dream shows you and, in some cases, even being aware that you're dreaming.
When it comes to consciousness, it's a little tricky to define, but I guess the best way perhaps is to look at the difference between being conscious and unconscious.
It's something that needs compleat definition to define it.
I often see people trying to break it down into one thing or to try to find it in one part of the brain.
While completely understandable, it's also possible that it takes many parts for consciousness to happen and possibly uses many parts of the brain.
I feel this is more likely.
We often incorporate feelings into consciousness. When I'm conscious, I can feel this or that which of course, is a chemical process.
We, at least most people but not all, hear their own voices in their heads when they are thinking.
I think if we were able to hear our own unconscious mind thinking, it would drive us crazy as it would most likely sound like white noise with all the information it has running through it every moment of every day.
The brain looks at, thinks about, and sees the world in two impoertant ways.
From a conscious and unconscious point of view, logical verses creatively, solid verse abstract and so on.
It's as if there are, and it could possibly be right, two versions of you within your skill.
Those two versions speak to one another, compare information, and come to some conclusion who's is what we might call consciousness.
The quality of consciousness is not strained;
It enables us to imagine gentle rain from heaven
Upon ourselves beneath. It is twice blest;
It blesseth him who feels it and him who models it
Our unique 'consciousness' was positively selected (if not now, but at some earlier time) because it significantly altered the ratio of 'energy out, to energy in' permitting more suucessful calorie investment in offspring.
So, what then is it?
The capacity to stand next to a cave wall tonight, and using imagination and pictographs model the environment tomorrow, including the feel of all the conditions upon our minds and bodies. so we could more efficiently stalk the megafauna that provide all those calories.
The evolution of consciousness is the purpose/process of the universe.
Consciousness arises from the influx of ideality with its contrast of reality, with the purpose of reshaping the latter into a finite select appearance -- A.N.W
Motivational creativity.
Interesting to parse the difference between consciousness and attention. Consciousness is the more generalized state which can be passive and receptive, OR focused and active - which is what we call "attention." If you are able to quiet your active attention from thought to thought like a butterfly flitting from flower to flower, (such as in a state of meditation), then that is a more pure state of consciousness in which you still feel like you without necessarily being preoccupied by any particular thought or narrative. The value of this is a state of serenity in which one can step back from over identifying with any particular narrative which can often involve conflict or confusion.

0:50 from the physical perspective, it seems as consciousness is necessary for the animation of the physical structure and its meaningful interaction with its surroundings... but the quest for purpose leads to a new question: what is the purpose of a conscious physical structure or life and what/where is its source 🤔

Consciousness is both the data and the appreciation of the data, where appreciation is the "meaning" of data with respect to organismic goals. The "data" part of consciousness is the covarying of brain activity with events happening in the external (real) world.
Maybe I left some stuff out, but this seems like an OK minimal "functional" definition.

@@RecklessG1 Imo, consciousness needs to be understood first and foremost from the perspective of biological evolution. Consciousness arose and increased in complexity over time due to the benefits for survival it offers the creatures who have it.

There are literally millions of strategies at all levels of consciousness, but they all have the same ultimate goal... to live as long as possible. Every form of life, even if we don't think they are conscious now wants to go on living because continued existence could possibly lead to consciousness in the future. Though the strategies are wildly varied, they all still have the same goal, to achieve as high a level of consciousness as possible and to remain there as long as possible. Edit, maybe my statement would be more accurate if I said.. the ultimate goal of life is to achieve consciousness and the ultimate goal of consciousness is to remain conscious. Do you think that might encompass both our thoughts?
Instead of wasting time inquiring whether consciousness has a purpose, the most appropriate approach is to assume it does have:
It indicates moments of interaction with interior of the earth, so that by deriving the mathematical model of the mechanism how PLANTS grow interactively, i.e. due to particle interactions inside the earth (genotype events) influenced by how beings act on its surface (phenotype events), we can control their growth particle physically at the present moment (NOT just EXPLAIN as something that happened in the remote past, as evolution teaches).
By derivimg that model we can find the way to PREVENT all evil while their causes are still inside the earth, so that they never reach the surface to harm any being.
Thus, NATURE's purpose of consciousness is to:
TRANSFER THE POWER OF STEERING THE FLOW OF EVENTS IN THE UNIVERSE FROM THE CHAOCRATIC SEQUENCE OF PARTICLE INTERACTIONS IN THE CORE OF THE EARTH TO THE IDEAL SUSTENANCE OF EVIL FREE LIFE BY US ON ITS SURFACE.
This also explains why nature created evil:
TO TRANSFER POWER OF STEERING EVENTS IN THE UNIVERSE FROM THE CORE OF THE EARTH TO ITS PERIPHERY.
Although nothing can justify evil, this possibility offers the only option how we can ourselves end it, instead of crying about it.
Our task is to design the laws how NATURE should function and implement them by rectifying the errors in it after deriving the model how it functions at present with all the evil (defined exhaustively as DISASTERS, PREDATION, DISEASES ~ which include all birth defects, all weapons manufacture and all violence ~ and DEATH) and implement them.
There is no point in slavishly looking for LAWS OF NATURE even after "observer dependence" of results of experiments in QM clearly shows that NATURE HAS NO LAWS but we are free to decide what laws it should follow and analyze phenomena ONLY to find the means to implement the laws we designed for nature to follow.
The fact that scientists still attempt to DISCOVER probabilistic LAWS OF NATURE instead, is identical to the situation when some slaves decided to serve their former masters even after they were declared free, just because they didn't know how to survive on their own.
Proof of the poverty of imagination of the entire scientific community without even a single exception.
Life need not be considered as something that originated in the past (as evolution teaches), but an ongoing process that occurs billions of times every single day, clearly observable in the fact that the earth develops plants everyday and delivers parts of bodies of beings through them as food and air to be assembled by already delivered ones on its surface.
No need whatsoever to perform any experiment and/or special observation to conclude so, but just the readiness to see what happens as it really does.

If consciousness were independent of physical brain, then why would anyone ever be wrong about a physical fact? If two people stood in a field and one person blinked as lighting struck on the horizon, both person’s experiences would differ. One person saw the lightning, the other didn’t.

If we were to extend your statement to the following “Consciousness IS dependent on physical processes and a physical processes IS dependent on laws of physics”. @@steve_____K307 My statement has nothing to do with the purpose of consciousness. As for the origin, neurologists believe consciousness originates in the cerebral cortex. The point of my comment is to demonstrate that consciousness is the result of physical processes, and I used an example of misinterpretation of reality to show how physics influences a persons consciousness.
Human consciousness doesn't have a general purpose. It has whatever purpose you, and/or society, assigns to it.

Another obviously circular argument about "the purpose of consciousness": It's for motivation. But without consciousness there is no one to be motivated. A thermostat and a computer do not need to be "motivated." Same with all the attention based arguments; i.e., the "workspace" argument. A non-conscious entity does not need a "workspace" to work, and it doesn't have "attention." It just does what it is caused to do by antecedent events.
According to materialism, consciousness is thoroughly irrelevant to causation. So its not needed to motivate anyone or focus their attention.
Consciousness only has a purpose if it has a unique causal role (i.e., free will), in which case that causal role is the purpose of consciousness, not the things that facilitate its decision-making.
But no scientist wants to say that consciousness has a causal role, so they come up with circulate BS like "motivation" or "attention." Why do highly intelligent people become so dumb when talking about consciousness?
What are you talking about? A thermostat and computer do need to be motivated. Thermostats do nothing until the Mercury “motivates” the thermostat to kick the AC on.
Regarding computers…..There is literally a “prompt” which is a message that is issued to the terminal when the program in control requires input from the terminal user.

Hi Jenny Miko, you post an interesting comment that appears to be deeply flawed!, I have been experiencing the proliferation of two slightly different forms of cancer and in both the production of new dangerous tissue has been going on without any attention from me or anyone else!. In fact it is only the attention that it has been getting that has at least I hope been reducing that growth if not stopping it entirely.

"special"? "purpose"? "why"? these are terms presuppose meaning, reason and intentionality for which there is no testable evidence of. Like finding patterns in TV snow, such issues are strictly of intrinsic perspective, not of objective truth.

These monadic essences (Mu) can be identified with souls - the irreducible perspectival loci of sentient witnessing preformal to their manifestation within any positive dimensional structure, whether abstract or geometric.
IV) Subject/Object Bordism & Non-Commutative Geometric Correspondence
To model how the subjective monadic seeds (Mu) give rise to objective phenomena, we turn to non-commutative geometric correspondences between the:
