Mexican Navy Tall Ship Cuauhtémoc Visits Melbourne 2024

The tall ship Cuauhtémoc of the Mexican Navy just visited Melbourne. It was open to the public and it was a majestic, wonderful sight. The crew were amazing as they braved the wind to stand along the masts as the ship left port. Thanks to Jupiter Bautista of Tempus Quartet (Mexico) for allowing me to use their version of a famous Mexican song, La Sandunga. Cuauhtémoc is a steel-hulled three-masted barque launched in 1982, which is 90.5m long and has a mast height of 48.2m. Cuauhtémoc is named after the last Aztec emperor and warrior, and is the Mexican Navy’s instructional tall ship for fourth-year cadets at the Heroic Naval Military School. She and her 261 member crew are a diplomatic symbol of Mexico abroad. This cruise is the one with the largest number of female personnel throughout its history, with 53 women out of a total crew of 261 members.
