Nothing else for me will ever come close to comparing to the journey I went on after spending the past 5 months playing through all 9 Trails games consecutively and putting 900+ hours into the series. I wouldn't take back a minute of the time I spent, I really loved and enjoyed every minute and this series is about as close to 'perfect' as a series can get IMO.
The Trails of Cold Steel series is now firmly in my favorite 5 jrpg franchises right there with the Final Fantasy's Dragon Quests, Tales of series, Grandia, and Suikoden.
I don't remember how much time I devoted to the first two titles, but my final save file for Trails of Cold Steel III was over 300 hours. I ordered IV as soon as I had the opportunity. I'm relieved to discover that your review is positive.
Okay. I finally reached the end game of CSIV, so I think I can comment on the Break system now. I think the biggest failing of every trails game is they never PROPERLY explain the AT battle system to users. Because of this, the break system seems oppressively nerfed (especially compared to 3), because people break enemies with S-Crafts or with Crafts with high delay (or arts with high delay), and the enemy recovers IMMEDIATELY and gets extra turns. There is still quite a bit of delay after a break, and if you break the enemies with a basic attack, or with low delay arts (or you have a properly built speed caster set up), you will still get 4-5 attacks before they unbreak. The next level is adding in delay reduction brave orders which can give you 6-9 turns before they act. It's still a lot weaker than 3, but I still build around breaking on physical teams and pay careful attention to breaking otherwise, because if you break them the right way, you still get a massive advantage for it. Basically, yes, the break system is nerfed, but it isn't as worthless as people think. You really need to pay attention to the delay on the moves you use (especially on nightmare) to take full advantage of it and I think it's pretty well-balanced in 4 (unlike most of the other mechanics xD). That being said, you can still just one shot lots of fights and speed casting lets you cast 20 times per enemy turn xD. So focusing on breaking enemies is kind of week compared to just "killing them" or doing other broken builds. But I mean, that was true in cold steel 3 as well... and in cold steel 2, and in cold steel 1, so it's not that unique. I definitely appreciate that the combination of harder to break enemies, with the defensive bonuses non-broken enemies gets makes for a much harder early-mid game on nightmare. TL;DR Break is still very very good, but you shouldn't use 4 s-crafts to break enemies any more, or even really high delay crafts or arts to break enemies - focus on making sure all your characters will be able to act after the break and remember fit in at least one high level action quartz on every character. Yes, fishing 4 million blue marlins on Byronia beach is probably the best way to make sure you have enough action 3's to make a million nohval gems)
So I just finished this and as much as I love trails ....can we talk about the issues for a sec. 1. Why are there zero consequences in this series? 2. Why do none of the characters take any situations they are in seriously and have zero urgency 3. Why are there no actual bad guys. I get the trope but it's used on every single person . 4. Why is it too slow or too fast with turbo? Why not balance it properly so a turbo mode is not necessary If someone could explain it would be great
Before ToCS 1 released I didn't know about the Trails games. After 30 hrs in ToCS 3 (finished 1 and 2 before of course) I decided to quit to start over playing through the Liberl and Crossbell arcs first. I'm still at Trails in the Sky 1. It'll take quite a while until I'm gonna play ToCS 4 (pre ordered the LE lol) but I dont feel like being in a hurry. This is the most immersive and satisfying journey I've ever experienced with a video game series and I want to enjoy every second of it to the fullest
CS 1&2 are self-contained enough so you don't HAVE to play azure to understand them. CS 3 is where the characters from all 3 arcs start getting involved.

Just came here for the score section since I haven't played CS3 yet and am avoiding spoilers. - CS1 was a 9/10 fantastic slow burn where I grew to love your party and the relationships as well as the world building. - CS2 was a 6.5/10 as actual stuff happened...but so little of it was memorable to me and character development was minimal relative to other Trails games. This is the first game in the franchise that left me feeling disappointed. Now 6.5 isn't a bad score...in fact this game had the best gameplay I've experienced in the entire franchise. But it absolutely left me concerned for CS3 and CS4. I have CS3 installed and ready to play but I'm waiting on the PC release of CS4 so I can more or less play those two back to back. Anyways...very happy to see you loved this game. Saying its as good as Sky Second Chapter is enormous praise. I'm looking forward to see if Cold Steel can turn things around for me personally or if my thoughts will be in the minority like they are with CS2.
Cold Steel 2 is undoubtedly the weakest entry in the series, though I still think it's a very good game overall. CS3 is better, but still not my fav. Now CS4....this game...is my favorite in the entire franchise.
This game is cs2 2.0. Things happen in this game unlike cs2 but its bare minimum all the way. Cs3 gets completely fucked over retroactively that I have to reconsider my previous score of 9/10 to probably a 7 or 8. Coldsteel wasnt great and this game shouldve fixed that by going out with a bang, it even had all the tools for it. This game is all the BS you might hate about coldsteel taken to the logical extreme. Dialogue is bad and often just there so characters aren't silent despite having nothing to say. Bond events once again prevent meaningful story relevant characterization. Rean is denied of a proper conclusion to his personal emotional journey and is instead forced to be hero protagonist-kun. Good parts are lots of cameos from the sky and crossbell games, good lore drops and erebonia arc being over so the future games can get a fresh start. I dont know what to rate this game but ot doesnt matter since everyone who wants to see future trails games will play this one for continuity at the very least and others probably jumped ship at cs2 already. Its easily the worst conclusion to an arc but thats also because sky sc and azure are nuts.
9 games taking about 400 hours... looking at the copy of Trails in the Sky I have on Steam that I haven't played yet, I think I have a bit of a mountain to climb. Still, when I get around to it I'll likely get into the others if I enjoy it enough.
It's a MASSIVE mountain. But I was just talking about the Sky Trilogy and Crossbell arc taking 400 hours. The 4 Cold Steel games will take another 300 hours, lol.
yea thats the only reason I don't play the other trails series. they're hard to get, and I don't want to just play a fraction of the other series, it'll leave me hanging.
Old break system was dummy broken, so i get why they might have wanted to gut it. Pretty much any fight could be won with break-> lightspeed flash loop, or break-> arts celebration+ chrono burst loop.
DLsite for zero and then go to geofront's website for their fanpatch. The patch is super easy to use and does everything on its own provided you have the jp game. Azure can be downloaded from Geofronts site alongside the fanpatch, they just ask that you buy the activation code from the chinese distributor joyoland so that you legally own the game. The code isn't actually needed to play as the geofront patch bypasses the aggressive DRM. Geofront has step by step instructions for everything I said on their site.
Great video as always! How important is it to have a ToCs3 Save file for this one? Because i've played all games on Steam and the release for the PC Version of the 4th one is March next year. obviously i don't want to wait but i also don't want to lose any Bonding points/Event with Alisa or anyone else. much love
Not too much really it's just like CS1 to CS2 where you get an accessory depending on your completion rate of the teacher booklet. As for bonding points I am not sure but it won't really matter since you will get another chance to choose before this game ends.
Just to add on, the "Pom!" minigame must be completed if you wanna unlock probably the best master quartz for cp regeneration which I equipped to my Laura (best waifu)
While i greatly enjoyed this game i gotta say that it really suffered from a lot of the decisions they made earlier in the franchise (particularly the bonding system and how it impacted character interaction). Hajimari has an even MORE bloated cast but i felt that it did a better job storywise and everything...then again its a gaiden game so it isn't necessarily as 'epic' perse but it might be my favorite game in the series behind Ao (i know enough japanese to understand the story so i imported CS3-Hajimari. Tall task though). Probably my favorite jrpg franchise right now but I've been very interested in how people would react to this particular entry in the series since i beat it a bit over a year ago. Its highs are arguably the highest highs in the series but the lows are LOWWW lol.
Thanks for the comment. That's interesting to hear about Hajimari. I've tried to stay away from it but I have heard it does have a LOT of characters. I honestly really want there to be an arc that starts fresh, with a brand new main cast, and then cameos here and there from others.
@@HellFireRPGs Yeah hajimari is a great game. One of the 'new' characters has one of, if not the, best character arcs in the series. The next arc is looking like a soft reset. They hint towards it in the post game for hajimari. They have also said hajimari will be the last one with this battle system. I'm very interested in seeing where they go from here. Hope they learned a lot from the issues that cold steel suffers from (some of which started in Ao). Anyway, love your videos!
@@buttertoast1146 its funny how little impact cs1 and cs2 have on the overall events of the series. Cs3 gets pretty much made pointless by cs4 just saying "that mightve happened but it didnt matter" to most of the big events. The series has reached DBZ levels of death has no consequence at this point and its gonna be rough coming back from that. Coldsteel does less than the previous arcs in terms of characterwriting with twice the games. Almost all the good parts of coldsteel 4 are tied to some cameo making fans lose their mind because an actual good character is on screen for once.
I am waiting to play the last hour or two of 2, because I can't bring myself to finish it without having money for 3... And now they release 4... Sigh... Good video :)
also; will I like it? I love rpgs, especially if they are turn-based. but these days I cant seem to find any, ever since the ps3 gen really.. tried persona 5, but I hated the Simulator gameplay or lack of gameplay shall I say.
No you will not be able to understand the story at all. This game is the 9th game in a series of games that focuses heavily on continuity so much so that most of the games end on cliffhangers. You would be reading the conclusion to a story you don't know. Seeing tons of characters that should evoke reactions from you but you havent met before which robs them of the impact they deserve. This game is also very divisive among fans with many(myself included) call the game out on its lazy writing and unnecessary padding. The game throws around tons of cameos from old games which are a highlight for fans but wont mean anything to new players or they will even straight up spoil past games. The combat is nice but if you understand how the game works you will even find the hardest difficulty trivially easy. Play Trails in the Sky FC first and enjoy the previous 8 games. The first 5 are great and then coldsteel 1-4 is just alright for series standards but good as jrpg games.
Nah, Fie is the best girl by far. Lol I haven't even played CS3 yet, except about an hour; but now, I've got another reason to be excited to play these 2 games. Haven't played any JRPG's in quite awhile, so adjusting to the huge downgrade in combat pace will be tough... still, it's looking like it'll be well worth it
It does but the JP dub has a lot less voiced lines than the eng dub so despite being the far superior option quantity might beat quality for the people that regularly want to hear voiced lines in the story.
if its not repeating content then calling it padding is not correct. Especially if you learn new things from doing it. With a attitude like that all games will become candy crush
How do you call content then that serves no purpose other than to elongate the middle section of a game so that the finale doesnt seem as rushed? Act 2 in this game is pretty much on the level of cool optional bonus bosses that you fight as easter eggs in any other game but are somehow shoehorned in here during the mid section.
im so jealous of everyone who got theirs early. I haven't played the other 2 series because they're so freaking hard to get, I can only find pieces here and there. And I refuse to play fractions of games. Therefore I only played the cold steel series. I may be missing out on the cameos and stuff, but I think of it as playing from reans point of view. He doesn't know about the crossbell heroes just like me, so im experiencing what he's experiecncing.

Or just slap all the ats gear, casts and bell alongside virgo + gungnir master quartz combo on someone to nuke things for 30k+ with close to no delay. This game had 1 hard fight aside from knights on ng Nightmare and thats only because the BP requirement and I fucked up my quartz setup to not include seraphic ring or other broken aoe healing. It didnt force me to reload, just spam a few items. Honestly if you are aware of all the mechanics you can break this game six ways to sunday.
CS3 and 4 are a huge upgrade from CS1 and 2 in everything except for one important thing. The animation sequences. If you compare the Opening animation scene in CS1 and 2 you will notice how high quality it is with vibrant colors as well as great art and fps that can cure cancer. CS3 and 4 however are a huge downgrade and look completely halfhearted. The character faces look choppy and the art is terrible and the fps might as well be a few pictures stuck together. On another note, I'm surprised and sad about the break nerf. It was a huge game changer, I wonder why they even nerfed it?
I do think CS4 is a good game but I feel as if the rivalries were pointless given how rean had a unfair advantage instead making crow his puppet I personally didn't like they made legends lose to the power of friendship as a way to justify them winning kind of kills the plot rather due to skill and due diligence training the new class liberl arc and crossbell arc characters even if we rarely got to use them most of the game we were saved by random characters all somehow we can now defeat arianrod Jaegar King its understandable rean can beat crow and ordine it feels given rather than earned for plot convenience the SSS couldn't beat arianrod and somehow class 7 can it wouldn't be bad if it was reasonable learning a new S Craft or perfecting his ogre power but it also should be noted Aurelia Le guinn near her in power but I dont see Juna kurt altina ash musse any of them stronger than original class 7 members so the fact they won feels like a butt grab for plot convenience
I played it in japanese with a translation sheet. So i couldn't understand all of it but the mainstory. Storywise i was very disapointed. I played also all of the games, so i was so much hyped how it all concluded at the end. But the reasons for all the adults to do what they did or this "great phanstas...whatever - plan" was just so stupid... I don't want to spoiler but i think for those who will play the game, they will understand what i mean. Still a 09/10 for me.
This review is annoying, what characters did make a return for this game were watered down to a point of being unrecognizable, It's almost upsetting to see what Falcom does the past cast which they only brought back to sell game copies the game is bloated with characters that were not needed the game wastes it's time with fan service a massive party roster, on the topic of characters the members of both class 7s have their development stolen away from them so they can always be open to rean's harem pic of writing instead of doing decent world or good politics like what came before it cs4 relies on screaming tHe CuRsE whenever it needs something to happen, what have we point as fans have we gotten too when we think characters and the game screaming the curse replaces good politics and motivations. the only review that went into the actual writing was the RPG site and that was the only review that wasn't negative are you people pretending the hours of filler and sub-par writing doesn't exist now?
I actually feel bad for all the fanboys who want to like this game so bad so they can justify their 100s hours spent in a game that never corrected its past mistakes and relies on heavily nostalgia to sell.

I didnt like ToCS 2 very much. It just felt idk how to describe it the only part I felt it got good was the enteral castle.

9 games taking about 400 hours... looking at the copy of Trails in the Sky I have on Steam that I haven't played yet, I think I have a bit of a mountain to climb. Still, when I get around to it I'll likely get into the others if I enjoy it enough.
It's a MASSIVE mountain. But I was just talking about the Sky Trilogy and Crossbell arc taking 400 hours. The 4 Cold Steel games will take another 300 hours, lol.

yea thats the only reason I don't play the other trails series. they're hard to get, and I don't want to just play a fraction of the other series, it'll leave me hanging.

Old break system was dummy broken, so i get why they might have wanted to gut it. Pretty much any fight could be won with break-> lightspeed flash loop, or break-> arts celebration+ chrono burst loop.
Yeah, a mix between the two would have been perfect!

What is the best/easiest way to access the Crossbell games? I live in Australia.
DLsite for zero and then go to geofront's website for their fanpatch. The patch is super easy to use and does everything on its own provided you have the jp game.
Azure can be downloaded from Geofronts site alongside the fanpatch, they just ask that you buy the activation code from the chinese distributor joyoland so that you legally own the game.
The code isn't actually needed to play as the geofront patch bypasses the aggressive DRM.
Geofront has step by step instructions for everything I said on their site.

How important is it to have a ToCs3 Save file for this one?
Because i've played all games on Steam and the release for the PC Version of the 4th one is March next year.
obviously i don't want to wait but i also don't want to lose any Bonding points/Event with Alisa or anyone else.

Not too much really it's just like CS1 to CS2 where you get an accessory depending on your completion rate of the teacher booklet. As for bonding points I am not sure but it won't really matter since you will get another chance to choose before this game ends.
Just to add on, the "Pom!" minigame must be completed if you wanna unlock probably the best master quartz for cp regeneration which I equipped to my Laura (best waifu)
While i greatly enjoyed this game i gotta say that it really suffered from a lot of the decisions they made earlier in the franchise (particularly the bonding system and how it impacted character interaction). Hajimari has an even MORE bloated cast but i felt that it did a better job storywise and everything...then again its a gaiden game so it isn't necessarily as 'epic' perse but it might be my favorite game in the series behind Ao (i know enough japanese to understand the story so i imported CS3-Hajimari. Tall task though). Probably my favorite jrpg franchise right now but I've been very interested in how people would react to this particular entry in the series since i beat it a bit over a year ago. Its highs are arguably the highest highs in the series but the lows are LOWWW lol.
Thanks for the comment. That's interesting to hear about Hajimari. I've tried to stay away from it but I have heard it does have a LOT of characters. I honestly really want there to be an arc that starts fresh, with a brand new main cast, and then cameos here and there from others.
@@HellFireRPGs Yeah hajimari is a great game. One of the 'new' characters has one of, if not the, best character arcs in the series. The next arc is looking like a soft reset. They hint towards it in the post game for hajimari. They have also said hajimari will be the last one with this battle system. I'm very interested in seeing where they go from here. Hope they learned a lot from the issues that cold steel suffers from (some of which started in Ao). Anyway, love your videos!
@@trailerhero yeah I felt cs4 was disappointing in some ways, like the end result almost makes the whole journey pointless.
@@buttertoast1146 its funny how little impact cs1 and cs2 have on the overall events of the series. Cs3 gets pretty much made pointless by cs4 just saying "that mightve happened but it didnt matter" to most of the big events.
The series has reached DBZ levels of death has no consequence at this point and its gonna be rough coming back from that.
Coldsteel does less than the previous arcs in terms of characterwriting with twice the games. Almost all the good parts of coldsteel 4 are tied to some cameo making fans lose their mind because an actual good character is on screen for once.
I am waiting to play the last hour or two of 2, because I can't bring myself to finish it without having money for 3... And now they release 4... Sigh...

also; will I like it? I love rpgs, especially if they are turn-based. but these days I cant seem to find any, ever since the ps3 gen really.. tried persona 5, but I hated the Simulator gameplay or lack of gameplay shall I say.
No you will not be able to understand the story at all.
This game is the 9th game in a series of games that focuses heavily on continuity so much so that most of the games end on cliffhangers.
You would be reading the conclusion to a story you don't know.
Seeing tons of characters that should evoke reactions from you but you havent met before which robs them of the impact they deserve.
This game is also very divisive among fans with many(myself included) call the game out on its lazy writing and unnecessary padding.
The game throws around tons of cameos from old games which are a highlight for fans but wont mean anything to new players or they will even straight up spoil past games.
The combat is nice but if you understand how the game works you will even find the hardest difficulty trivially easy.
Play Trails in the Sky FC first and enjoy the previous 8 games.
The first 5 are great and then coldsteel 1-4 is just alright for series standards but good as jrpg games.

Nah, Fie is the best girl by far. Lol I haven't even played CS3 yet, except about an hour; but now, I've got another reason to be excited to play these 2 games. Haven't played any JRPG's in quite awhile, so adjusting to the huge downgrade in combat pace will be tough... still, it's looking like it'll be well worth it

It does but the JP dub has a lot less voiced lines than the eng dub so despite being the far superior option quantity might beat quality for the people that regularly want to hear voiced lines in the story.
if its not repeating content then calling it padding is not correct. Especially if you learn new things from doing it. With a attitude like that all games will become candy crush
How do you call content then that serves no purpose other than to elongate the middle section of a game so that the finale doesnt seem as rushed? Act 2 in this game is pretty much on the level of cool optional bonus bosses that you fight as easter eggs in any other game but are somehow shoehorned in here during the mid section.
im so jealous of everyone who got theirs early. I haven't played the other 2 series because they're so freaking hard to get, I can only find pieces here and there. And I refuse to play fractions of games. Therefore I only played the cold steel series. I may be missing out on the cameos and stuff, but I think of it as playing from reans point of view. He doesn't know about the crossbell heroes just like me, so im experiencing what he's experiecncing.
Then sky series is really easy to play if you have a PC. They're all on Steam and not very hardware intensive.

Yeah, The crossbell games are a lot more difficult. You'll have to buy them on Japanese websites and apply the Geofront patch separately.

@@HellFireRPGs Yeah, unfortunate for those people who pre-order via PSN, including myself. Even till now, we are still waiting for resolution 1 day after launch.
Cold steel iv requires the least amount of brain power arts celebration and chrono burst creates an infinite loop to cheese every boss in the game.
Or just slap all the ats gear, casts and bell alongside virgo + gungnir master quartz combo on someone to nuke things for 30k+ with close to no delay.
This game had 1 hard fight aside from knights on ng Nightmare and thats only because the BP requirement and I fucked up my quartz setup to not include seraphic ring or other broken aoe healing.
It didnt force me to reload, just spam a few items.
Honestly if you are aware of all the mechanics you can break this game six ways to sunday.
CS3 and 4 are a huge upgrade from CS1 and 2 in everything except for one important thing. The animation sequences. If you compare the Opening animation scene in CS1 and 2 you will notice how high quality it is with vibrant colors as well as great art and fps that can cure cancer. CS3 and 4 however are a huge downgrade and look completely halfhearted. The character faces look choppy and the art is terrible and the fps might as well be a few pictures stuck together.
On another note, I'm surprised and sad about the break nerf. It was a huge game changer, I wonder why they even nerfed it?

I do think CS4 is a good game but I feel as if the rivalries were pointless given how rean had a unfair advantage instead making crow his puppet I personally didn't like they made legends lose to the power of friendship as a way to justify them winning kind of kills the plot rather due to skill and due diligence training the new class liberl arc and crossbell arc characters even if we rarely got to use them most of the game we were saved by random characters all somehow we can now defeat arianrod Jaegar King its understandable rean can beat crow and ordine it feels given rather than earned for plot convenience the SSS couldn't beat arianrod and somehow class 7 can it wouldn't be bad if it was reasonable learning a new S Craft or perfecting his ogre power but it also should be noted Aurelia Le guinn near her in power but I dont see Juna kurt altina ash musse any of them stronger than original class 7 members so the fact they won feels like a butt grab for plot convenience

I played it in japanese with a translation sheet. So i couldn't understand all of it but the mainstory. Storywise i was very disapointed. I played also all of the games, so i was so much hyped how it all concluded at the end. But the reasons for all the adults to do what they did or this "great phanstas...whatever - plan" was just so stupid...
I don't want to spoiler but i think for those who will play the game, they will understand what i mean.
Still a 09/10 for me.

This review is annoying, what characters did make a return for this game were watered down to a point of being unrecognizable, It's almost upsetting to see what Falcom does the past cast which they only brought back to sell game copies the game is bloated with characters that were not needed the game wastes it's time with fan service a massive party roster, on the topic of characters the members of both class 7s have their development stolen away from them so they can always be open to rean's harem pic of writing instead of doing decent world or good politics like what came before it cs4 relies on screaming tHe CuRsE whenever it needs something to happen, what have we point as fans have we gotten too when we think characters and the game screaming the curse replaces good politics and motivations. the only review that went into the actual writing was the RPG site and that was the only review that wasn't negative are you people pretending the hours of filler and sub-par writing doesn't exist now?
I actually feel bad for all the fanboys who want to like this game so bad so they can justify their 100s hours spent in a game that never corrected its past mistakes and relies on heavily nostalgia to sell.

Agreed cs4 writing was awful, after 3's ending I thought the world would be post apocalyptic like with dark clouds and war but it just wasnt lol
