    I've been investing for a few years now, and recently started dipping my toes into options. I bought calls recently that are expiring in a few weeks. Is it generally best to sell the calls when the stock price is running up, or exercise the options and sell the stock right after?

    Hi Jake. Great video like always. Few questions. Do you always go for 4 months out? Do you ever exercise the option? If not, when do you generally sell to close?

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  3 роки тому +1

      I like contracts that are 4-6 months out because you don't lose as much value to theta decay and you don't pay as much for extrinsic value. I also never exercise contracts I buy. I always sell to close them for a profit. Weird things can happen after hours when contracts start getting exercised and I'll let the brokerage firms settle all that. I don't want something glitching out and then my account is down $30,000 because of an error in stock moving around.

    Hey Jake! Can't tell you how much I appreciate your work on Y.T.. You have helped me out a lot. I have a burning question that relates to selling put options and when to "sell to close"
    Today I had 4 contracts with QQQ with a strike price of 367.50. This morning the stock fell a lot and I "sold to close" all four of my contracts right before QQQ dropped below my strike price. My account showed I was way up. I had a cost basis at 1.71 and I sold at 2.74. I still had until Friday before the contract expired and it was a week long 7 day contract. Instead of making the initial premium of 684.00, I sold and I "think" I made 1093.00 instead.
    Was this wise? Could I have done something else? Eventually the stock did drop below my strike price right after I "sold to close" my position.
    Thank you so much in advance Jake!

      Yep! 100% I agree! I am actually looking forward to seeing the market stall out or decline to learn what I can and figure out how to make money even when everything is going down (shorting and buying puts).

    Hey Jake, thanks for being so transparent and educational. I'm pretty new still so I have no intention of doing what you're doing...yet. I'm happy for your gains though!
    I do have some questions about taxes. With so much trading and short term gains, how are those going to be calculated? Quarterly estimated payments? ....Can losses be [double] written off since they are UA-cam videos which is work-related(??)...? Right? Technically it's a loss and an expense...That's probably just asking to be audited.

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Xeqcme! The quarter tax payments I am supposed to pay this year are calculated based on what extra money I owed for last year. So not much in quarterly payments, but I will have a huge tax bill at the end of this year. As for taxes on active trading, i cover that more in detail in this video: ua-cam.com/video/z_FEsms4jdw/v-deo.html

    this video is awesome. just re-watched after learning for the past month and can understand more. i'm really wishing you had some bond investing videos and wanted to ask you to consider it here. i've heard an investment strategy i like to fluctuate from 0-20% bond allocation and basically sell high on bonds to buy low on stocks and repeat. I'm hoping after you complete your challenge soon you'll be ready for the next thing...and i would really love to hear your perspective on an equally complicated subject

    Buying options are powerful if done correctly. I've made >100% profits in a day several times. Although I would never risk greater than 1% of my portfolio at any time and always day trade or next-day swing trade these due to theta decay, it still adds up as a nice speculative play along with your other strategies. Slightly out of the money contracts when the market is moving is a great way to profit off the momentum.
    I haven't bought anything but puts this year. I'm assuming you're doing the same? Nice job!
    I'd be interested in knowing what timeframe (DTE) you're buying these at?

    Hey jake,
    I really like your style of trading. Very unique for call options trader. I prefer selling options but I also do long buy call options. Do you go 6 months and itm or atm? Or long with otm?

    • @JakeBroe
      @JakeBroe  3 роки тому +1

      I buy calls that are 4-6 months out and I go with a strike price closest to ATM. Then I hope to sell to close before 1-2 months before expiration.

    It's amazing to meet someone who also trade options and stocks in the stock market! I'd love to connect with you and learn more about your experience in the process of joining the military and trading options. I'm also interesting in joining the military after college this year and I'm trading stocks (options too). I have no previous experience in military.
