- In this video I give a full in depth tour of the 2004 VW Phaeton. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and exterior of this car while showing details, over viewing of features, and noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I also show the engine and the details of it, start it up and see how it sounds under acceleration. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.
The Phaeton is one of those cars that looks completely normal to most people, but to a car person will make them stop whatever they're doing and just stare in awe.
yeah, excellent car. too bad most idiots disregard them outright. the chinese realise its value. Now they get it as phideon.
This is the kind of car that gives Mercedes, BMW, and Jaguar a run for there money, and shows them what a luxury car should be.
Charles Earle it looks so boring tho
Understated and boring is exactly what some prefer. But clearly, it did not sell as well as VW had hoped in the North American market.
Gixxeff 750 Compared to what exactly?
A shame the American public didn't take enough interest in this car. It was so sophisticated in many ways. The only thing they did wrong was not borrow Audi A8's space frame for the chassis. But this car is essentially the Bentley Continental Flying Spur.
Joe Black In what way is this a pile of junk?
Exactly that’s why I call Americans American’ts
The Audi A8 and phaeton doesn't share the same chassis?
@@rafapenson 7 year old comment. Not sure lol. I know Audi A8 used space frame and was lighter weight than Phaeton.
Ahead of its time. more luxury than cars of today. 10 years later.
full led tail lights and cars today are still being made with not even half of these features. its insane lol
yeah me either this is such an underrated car
20 years now
The fact that Welcome to the Family came on just gives me another reason to want one
Me too, and I have a 2015 VW Passat which is very nice, but now I would like to look into purchasing one of these. I wonder how many are floating around today?
Not to many they are a pretty rare car especially w12
Yep, there's only one for sale in my state. Makes me want one the more.

This car was light years ahead of its time..... Only true car enthusiasts can pick out a Phaeton on the road and appreciate the amazing engineering put into it. I saw a Phaeton just yesterday but I couldn't get close enough to see if it was a W12...
Really looks like the best 2004 car money can buy, including A8, BMW 7 series, etc. This thing is luxurious as hell and does 200 mph...that's insane.
Those trunk hinges though....
They are from the buggati veyron
i'm the only one who hasn't seen this car in real life????
I seen one yesterday. I thought it was a Audi.
it looks like a passat, so may have missed it.
I'm going to try to buy one....for a commute car....for around 7,000$
*****
Buy one not as a daily driver but investment. If kept in mint condition with low miles these will start to appreciate in a few years. Especially the W12 version.
***** We have a clueless kid over here.
A piece of advice, if you want to be a car enthusiast you need some minimum knowledge.
the cars are depreciating for some obvious reasons, not everybody like it but not a single car lover thinks the VW Pheaton is "junk" besides you.
And if you can't see even those reasons, I suggest you move on an go find another hobby, because the car world is clearly not for you.
That W12 , sounds so smooth I bet you if you put a glass of water on top or near the intake manifolds there's going to be practically zero vibration
If you want to know how it feels to drive a Bentley but don't have the money, this is the car you should buy. Excellent value!
The corresponding model of Passat of that era was a nice car, the last one to be built in Germany for the NA market. It did had problems with the engine head and turbo when non synthetic oil was used (1.8T engine), costly suspension arms, door lock actuators, etc. The 1.8T engine was really weak in city but great for overtaking. For a german car, it was really well made with great driving position and handling on the highway. I suspect the Phaeton to be even times better which should actually be quite impressive.
Ultimately the best car on this earth!
This car was way ahead of its time.
That has to be the most feature pack car you have reviewed yet! Great review, getting all the functionality in. Happy new year as well!
This video made me buy my own Phaeton :)
If you find one of these in good overall condition, it's a good collector's car. It will go up in value.
Really liked this car, I was out in the UK the other week and my car for the week was this and it was awesome.
Damn look at this car... Almost 10 years old and it look like vw just commercialised it! Definitely getting one when my car reach 250 000km's.
Thumbs up for a heavily underrated car and also for Avenged Sevenfold on the radio!
I don't think there was a single feature that was left out of this car. A lot of people complained that they didn't want to pay $80,000 or so for a Volkswagen when it's supposed to be "the people's car"...but with the Phaeton, I feel like they took a Rolls Royce and made it more affordable.
That is such an underrated car!
Awesome car
Kyle , top shelf of the Volkswagen and you know
I Like IT.
Avenged Sevenfold !5:48 where do you live where they actually play good music on the radio?
NC it seems
Your voice reminds me of the fellow that played on Due Date. (new subscriber)
The build quality on this thing is stunning. Is that the original paint because it looks flawless. Very impressive with a BMW or Audi badge it might have sold more.
This was a real competition with Mercedes
CloroxBleach and bently
Thanks to you Addy VW's still rollin' strong in this day and age and I myself have a People's car, the Passat.
At my volkswagen dealer we have an 04 Phaeton v8. It only has the single tip exhaust unlike the w12's dual tips. Still a sexy car though
Be suprised how cheap you can by one. I saw one at a BMW dealer for $8,995 with 90k miles on it. That W12 is a tank, so I bought it :) love this car
Would you be able to talk to me and send some photos?
I want to buy this car but need somebody to talk to
I'd love to see a review of a BMW 5-series wagon like the one that can be seen in this review. More wagons in general would be awesome!
This is a surprisingly unique car.
+Armando Garza most low profile luxurious sedan ever
200 mph in a VW I wonder why it was so underrated
Kyle, I'm using my itouch for UA-cam and I have not seen the video because it's still processing, however I see the title and u have outdone yourself again! Cheers! Haha
What a fantastic car , I love it
I have only seen ONE Phaeton in my life!
Great planning in recording this next to a road with heavy traffic, when the engine is started and running at idle all we can hear is the road traffic.
That's one the few Volkswagens that I like.
Avenged Sevenfold at 6:03!!!
One of my favorite cars of all time, thanks Kyle ;-)
Unexpected car from vw!
shut up , when you'll make your own car then you can say about other cars are shit.
Can everyone stop fucking fighting on my comment? Thanks
one hell of a luxury car, love it!
This isn't an '04. '04s didn't have the wood around the center console cup holders like this one does.
some Mercedes and Jaguars have been doing that since 70s... learn more about cars kid (:
+escobar 370gt What the heck are you even talking about? I was talking about the VW, not some old Merc.
Spitfire599 obviously you don't know about cars... VW has been having that way far back from "04s" Mercedes and Jaguar was an example ... Learn more kid
+escobar 370gt Okay, you're obviously a thick-headed moron who has no idea what I'm talking about. I know that VW and all those cars have been doing that since the '70s. What I mean is that the 2004 Phaeton had leather material around the cupholder area, where as the '05 and '06 had wood. Think before you open your god damn mouth.
Spitfire599 didn't ready you message but cool story kid learn more about cars (:
I think this is one of the best automotive in the world.Just wish is was more readable in price for me.George Wharton.Baltimore aNd.
CLOSE THE DOOR!
AVENGED SEVENFOLD (I started jamming out when Welcome to the Family was playing)
So good review!
This was a great looking call. They should've kept this line going. But I'm sure no one wants to pay 90k or more dollars for a Volkswagon.
This car is overengineered and so underated.
The quad zone a/c, the dehumidifier and the engineering of the body alone is more technologically advanced than mercedes back then. Watch the top gear episode when the phaeton is in the show.
A giant passat :D IMO
Very impressive ride though with the surprising features.
If you are selling this car, you may want to mention, that in side a Bentley Continental GT is the same engine, suspension and everything else, the car is the only one that VW Group makes completely and only in Germany, it is 100% hand built, that VW has a special transparent factory in Dresden where the Phaeton is made exclusively, that this car was the final project of Ferdinand Piech before stepping down as the CEO of VW, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche himself... it may help you sell it.
@brandonhessler this actually a rebadged Bentley Continental Flying Spur. it was even built in the same factory in dresden, germany. i had an auto shop who owns a phaeton
Very very good car I have Passat phaeton 2007 w6 3.0 is black and grey colors
20 percent tinted , with some new white lights , it'll be the perfect car for me tbh
It's identical to my parents Phaeton....Beautiful car...only difference between this one and the one that my parents have is that they have the 4-seater version. Otherwise...they could be twins.
Love the video just for the A7X feature
the engine on the 2002-present Volkswagen Pheaton
Engine
petrol engines:
3.2 L VR6
4.2 L V8
6.0 L W12
diesel engines:
3.0 L V6 TDI
5.0 L V10 TDI
CANNOT believe this is from '04. didn't even know it existed!
Some of the features you can only get on $100,000+ cars. Next year the Lincoln Continental is coming out and they said it's their turn to make a car ahead of their time. Let's wait and see!
handsome car, especially its so simple
audio....A7X and the car is AWESOME!!
Yes the A8 is the king of luxury, I'd do many things to have one of those!
the engine bay. The set I have cost me 25 dollars but I seen it way cheaper online. As far as basic maintenance it isn't too bad. Most dealer services are a rip off as I found out. The majority of people who buy those kinds of cars are not really aware about their car as i previously stated. They are ways people can own a luxury German car and not spend lots of money on dealer maintenance. I suggest joining vehicle forums online. They really help especially in saving money.
@kuubamies with regards to CCD, Chris Moran left CCD. Chris left a message at CCD's profile about his departure
@markkjay Agreed..best part is that they have proven to be extremely reliable!
I remember someone around were I live had one of these, I believe they moved, if I remember correctly they were a very well off family. They lived in the "rich" neighborhood they lived in that's in this small town I live in, and alot of people didn't like them. They were very snobby, hell I think even the snobs that live in that neighborhood didn't like them that much either. I got nothing against people who are well off, just I don't like people who constantly brag and show off how "better" they are than everyone else.
Just remember, the kind of car you drive has nothing to do with how good of a person you are.
Kevin Hoffman Oh I know that, its just I find it funny how my memory of this car was from that family.
This car was built in my hometown. ♡
Look for Gläserne Manufaktur Dresden. ❤
looking forward for this car
This is nicer then the A8 in my opinion. I find the A8 seems more plane.
6 years old and more advance than some cars today!
They actually still make this car, and just keep it away from the states.
amaazing car thanks for the indept review
I think so, too. There might be one or two in Argentina. But you can only find the Phaeton on VW's Germany page only. Too bad.
That's why it's so cool.
Because cars of nowadays put technology before simple luxury, that's why American luxury cars from the 80's and 90's were so unbeatable, cars like the Lincoln Town car, Ford LTD, Cadillac Sedan Brougham, Cadillac Sedan Deville, etc etc etc.
You didnt mention the road noise maintains the same noise you hear in the cabin at the time you sit in it, it remains the same db at 200mph its a bentley and is made on the same bentley production line people under estimate this vehicle but its half the price for a badge difference.
I had a 2000 GTI and a lot of the interior pieces looked similar. I was very disappointed with the quality, fit and finish. Any surface you touched seemed to come apart after about 4 years, not to mention ongoing electrical problems. The car was comfortable and nice to drive though. Hope the Phaeton could deliver better quality for the price but I'm skeptical.
Wow very nice for 2004
What an impressive car. I can only imagine how expensive it would be to fix if something were to break!
Oh, by now, parts have gotten fairly cheap, it's just the labor that get expensive quickly, especially when a job requires major disassembly, for example changing the V10's starter requires removing the whole engine, which is multiple hundred bucks just in labor, plus the starter!
@@unmountablebootvolume yup. Parts on a lot of cars can be “cheap” but labor cost is usually the killer for most people. It’s like getting your favorite candy and figuring out that it cost an extra dollar or more because of inflation 😭like damn I want it so bad but why it gotta cost like that
@007texan
Holy crap! The cheapest one I found for sale in Norway was for around 69'000 dollars (03' model with a V8). You americans are lucky....
@jayzaro Yes it's still in Production.
I don't think VW was ready to release this car when they did, i like it but it felt like the timing was wrong, seemed more like VW just wanted to put their fancy W12 engine in something other than a bugatti or bentley
People don’t understand that this car was made for the people with money who don’t want to brag. Who like the car for what it is. Despite it ‘only’ having a VW badge
Are they still not out yet there? It's a 2004..
So hard to find the w12 ive been looking for one to buy for 2 months
I dunno why but when I say Phaeton, I always let out Phantom! And I've got the coupe model
it seems like its realy quiet inside
I really like this understated luxury compared to the the Audi A8 sibling.
ultra rare car...this car is totally as good or better as other flagships but people turn their nose up at it because it has a VW logo.
Sweet vehicle :)
Id take this over one of those Lamborghini's any day!
is the car still for sale?
Did anyone else notice it was overheating?
Only car i've ever seen where you cqan direct the vents to the feet the windshield AND the center (face) at the same time... why is that not possible on other cars? Seems to be a standard of sorts....
@kuubamies Yeah I loved them. Wish they would come back.
tbh, I would recognize the phaeton as any other Volkswagen car.
Try a luxury Audi. It's the prestige brand of Volkswagen and the interior features of Audis are just the best on the market.
The Phaeton is one of the most under-rated vehicles in the automotive world! I always thought that this was a wonderful car.
Tony Wise youre right, if audi doesn't have A8, phaeton will be much more popular.
+Tony Wise Its sad that a really beautiful car was a low sales.
+Roberto Demarco its unfortunate that people shy away because of it not having a prestige logo
I totally agree.
Roberto Demarco it's a boring car
This is one of those cars real car guys know.
Yes
Yup
@@carlosc30 YES!!
@@carlosc30 hi
Yea I used to mistaken it for a passat but after I got to know the name I somehow remembered
Still impressive looking after more than ten years!
Nice looking car
It's funny that a 2004 vw phantom is still more advanced than most American cars today
in fact yeah :D
+MrABedRules how much can you get a used one With good milage
+Fedrick Santos $8000-9000.
It's $90,000 car that looks like a cheap $14000 car though.
I've seen the V8 variant with under 100,000 miles for 5,000.
This car is freaking nice even for today's standards. It has aged really well
Such a special car and a shame VW gave it the same key as a Golf 😂😂
The first Veyrons had the same key with a Bugatti logo. 😂
all VWs of the same generation have the same key, it works well and at least you don't need a specific part for every single model, think about it it's for our own benefit.
Audi a8's from that generation have the same key as well. And as someone else said its a greatly designed key. My dad owned an a8 from that generation and I love the key.
Cesar Hanson what in the fuck does a key have to do with anything. please explain you fucking idiot cesar salad
