8:12 - phenomenal flash of why he is a grandmaster - taking a look at the end game pawn structures and can already identify he wins on tempo! I was curious how much grandmaster skills transfers to other chess variants -- seems like some, but still tons of work for them to do!
I was the former #1 player in atomic in the world before retiring. Why the game is not technically "solved," white can basically force a draw at will if they desire to do so. The game is much more imbalanced towards white than normal chess. Theory is also extremely critical in this variant (atomic).
@falcon_224 There are a lot of ways Black can defend. White indeed already has an advantage from the beginning and can enter some lines that are near-forcing if they so choose. But I think the jury is still out regarding whether White can force a win at will with perfect play from both sides.
3:05 Black has forced mate. Black should play Qh5! forcing f3, followed by Qh4+ forcing g3, followed by Qd4 forking d2 and f2. The only correct move after Qa5 was c3, which defends the all-important d4 square. 6:25 White has an elementary win with Rc8+ Ke7 Re8+ followed by Rxe6#. He could also take h7 and win with the extra pawn. 13:19 White has forced mate. Ne5! fxe5 followed by Qh5+ g6 Qg5 and it's over. Hikaru blundered the same thing again at 31:33 and this time, the opponent, rated 1900 and certainly experienced in Atomic, did punish it. 17:48 2. Nd4 is tricky. The correct move for Black is Nh6, with not only covers f5 but has the counter-threat of Ng4-Nf2. Watching this video and trying to come up with good moves was super fun because I'd sometimes come up with the move that Hikaru used. Since I'm not great at chess, this video was a lot more understandable than a lot of videos.
22:50 I'm surprised this isn't counted as an instant checkmate, since capturing the hanging rook is forced and possible but explodes the King. I would have thought that if all the King's possibilities result in it being exploded that it would still be checkmate.
If rook takes rook, won't they both just explode? How will you play Rd8 after the explosion? Also, how will pawn capture be mate when pawns don't explode? Maybe I'm missing something
That was me playing lol :D It was a forced mate after he responded Pc3 with Nh6, It’s a classic trap in atomic People still don’t believe me when I tell them I have beaten Hikaru :)
13:20 missed a win by overthinking, you were 1 away from mate cuz he cant move that pawn and the king is too slow if you moved your horse up right [edit: i know you noticed it later after seeing more of the video]
When pawn captures, only the capturer and captured explodes, and the surronding pieces don't, in any case between captures, pawns don't get exploded when surronding captures occur.
The rules are easy. When you capture a piece, your piece and the captured piece explode. All pieces in adjacent squares are removed from the game unless they are pawns.
Chat was right, you had mate in 2 at 6:35. Rook D8, if King E7 then rook E8 and wherever the king goes you take the pawn and win. If king F7 then you just take his rook and win
at 5:47 he could go g6 and if he/she takes on g6 he could go h8 and win a rook and if he or she didint take the pawn he could take it and win the rook again and draw

It's not forced game over then yet, the rook can capture the pawn and explode the bishop
Because rook takes pawn on f4. Destroying the bishop and getting the king out of check
Rxf4 blows up the bishop and then Rf6 is mate
Ohhh gotcha! I missed Rxf4, that's a pretty atomic response
Only I saw mate in three in 6:35? Rd8 Ke7 (if Kf7 rook takes rook) Rd8 and mate next move by taking the e6 pawn
Very cool pattern, well found
and even after Re7 and Kd8, there's Re8 check Kc7 (if Kd7 rook takes on e6), Rc7 and then regardless of black's move, rook takes on c6
