Namaj Amar Holona | Ei Deshe te ei Shukh Holo | Klanti Amaye Khoma Koro

The first song is Namaj Amar Hoilo Na Aday by Durbin Shah of Shunamganj, Sylhet. The second song is of Lalon Fakir, Ei Deshey te ei Shukh Holo. The third song that I partially sing is Klanti Amaye Khoma Koro Probhu by Rabindranath.
These songs happen to come to me as one narrative that cut across times, lands and the binaries of the mystic and the modern. It’s more crucially a redemptive attempt to reflect on the vices and fatigue that my broken times and I embody; particularly, the vulgar renditions that we have made to songs of folk poets and minstrels. I am nobody to restore the ungraceful and uncouth ways to which songs, for instance, like Namaj Amar have many a times been subjected to. These are often ugly curated performances, stripped of its poetry and meaning. I only sing this today to reassure myself of its humility and grace that remain untouched, irrespective of who sings it and how and where and to whom. These songs are more powerful than any of their renditions by us. They surpass times and lands and the lust of mankind. These songs come to us in times of utter poverty that this nation is now witnessing and these songs will remain with us when there will be poetry too.
Note of apology: I was too carried away by the idea of the ‘boat of sin’ while singing the much well known song of Lalon Fakir’s, ‘Ei deshe te ei shukh holo’. Holding myself to only this broken boat, and failing of faith, I failed like the one, who missed his namaj, to take the name of Lalon and Shiraj Shai. Yet, they remain with me in times of fatigue and frailty that they themselves have been part of and have bestowed upon me.
