Just had my first Cain Session against an Idol, their host was someone neglected by the actual Idol industry due to a bone disease keeping them bed ridden. Missing their family's care, attention from the fans and the view of the ocean they manifested a sin in the form of a watery mermaid full of contorting flesh and bones! Their palace was an open stage with a film of water high in the sky with dead mermaids hanging from rusty hooks. Glad my GM enjoyed running the system after having a bad time running another. Glad you introduced me to this system!
Take my flesh? It was forefit anyway. Take my comerades? They were dead before we joined. Take my mind? You're doing me a favor tbh. But take my GOD DAMNED PAYDAY!? NOW we have a problem.
On the topic of anglerfish, the concept of a reverse anglerfish would be really cool, though not in the same way as your male anglerfish attaching to female anglerfish. Where anglerfish uses attraction as a lure to bring people towards its true, monstrous self, a reverse anglerfish would use fear as a repulsion to push people towards its true, idolized self. Think of a warmongering politician creating boogeymen to make people listen to them. Or a village protector whose second half is howling in the darkness, and after every dawn the protector comes out to greet the townsfolk, reveling in the praise of keeping everyone safe for another night. Everyone and everything outside of their circle is dangerous, we’re the only ones you can trust, you need us. And so on and so forth
Possible that he played it, just as likely both authors independantly researched their way into knowledge of 'the alchemical marriage' and the 'sacred hermaphrodite' both of which are pretty major themes / images from western esoteric occultism, which are pretty clear influences on byth F&H and CAIN.
"hold my darlings" is a situation i've dealt with a lot in D&D, with the general response being "they have more health? do more damage then. their underlings wont last forever."
this is making me want to do a classic small town midwestern cult, with the twist being the idol isnt the preacher themselves or the god they rule, but the preacher's "daughter" that gets all the attention for being a "perfect little angel" because what says devotion more than a parents love?
Spoiler; she died at some point, probably doing something her parents wouldn't have approved of, and the loss broke her father, who now leads the cult and is the host.
MAN these CAIN videos are always so good, the first two things that came to my mind with this were of course, Vtuber Idol which could be pretty horrifying because internet, and, Desna from Gunvolt, its sorta her thing with the grunts in her stage calling her a goddess and just praising her golden locks of hair, and of course in the same series there's also other two Adepts that could fit into the Idol mold nicely but i can't recall their names as of now...ANYWAYS GREAT VIDEO ONCE AGAIN MY DOOD! Also saw the Orikin stuff in there, fit the video perfectly
I have an idea for an Idol Sin, after seeing this video I'm wanting to revise it a bit, but the main idea was that the host had some...odd...behavior, and was never really accepted by their peers (they were really into the idea of cannibalism being a romantic gesture). They tried to make music to "be understood", when the music failed the Sin formed and took over the host's body as a Type II Sin, and its Cultists are all fans of this new and improved musician (and also cannibals). The true form of the Idol would be revealed in the Palace to be this gross, fleshy creature that had its hands reaching into the skull of the host, like some giant, fleshy, toothy parasite.
Cultist Simulator reference goes hard. I run a campaign for my friends in CAIN, coincidentally I'd found the system after watching your videos on Lancer as its the same people behind it. Thank you for making that possible and good job on these videos!
I can think of an Idol split in two or two Idols warring over cultists or a particular source, since they can see their origin as a treasure. I can also imagine an Idol forming a following as a sort of business, putting itself in the logo and posters plastered on the shop. Like they’re branding themselves, spreading their image in their products to attempt to brainwash as far and wide as possible. Maybe an Idol that merges its apostles together in an attempt to create an ultimate life form? Just out of pride for their own ability or likeness.
I love this game, there are so mane great moments for narrative immersive scenes, like I can imagine a scene where the Idol reveals it's true form, a being made of interlocking hands that has eyes on the back of it's palms, making the shape of a human body, then the cultists you're fighting freeze, the deacon suddenly raises his staff of office and shouts "Our God is with us, fight my brothers!" and a literal wave of psychic might washes over the entire room, boosting the cultists of the inner circle with renewed strength and resolve, the real fight just started.
i really love the end monologes you do for this videos, there is a lot of gravitas on that "EXECUTE IT". Excelent video, looking foward to the rest of the Sins (i crave the Toad)
Anglerfish Idol is definitely a cool idea, very unique. I did not think of the Idol as a sort of polar opposite to the Ogre, but it makes sense. Another fantastic video.
Next hunt for my group will be type II idol that is split into two represented by sun and moon. They are sister (sun) and brother (moon), where sister is the face of the cult having regular followers and brother is the shadow supporting her with enlighten ed followers. It replicates the dream and situation before sin. Also sun has The Glory and moon has Slumbering I saw a shape in the door. Love your videos, happy day everyone.
Just fought one of these myself. My exorcist got her hand fused together with her teammate's. The HOST of the SIN was a woman whose partner had been murdered.
This brings to mind the obvious question of what would happen if an Idol and a Ogre we're in the same location . . .and YOU had to deal with both of them.
I got into CAIN with your vids, and honestly it's been great! I now want to run an Idol hahaha, love the vibes you give in the videos, thanks for everything you do
Oh yeah. If you don’t smite the sin fast enough, it goes up a category. And they do *not* scale linearly. A room. A building. A city block. A city. A county. A country. (Etc.) And every time you successfully defeat one, CAIN considers you a category higher, so your next hunt *will* be worse.
I always have to wait until im in the right mindset to watch these videos because they always go so hard Love them though! Can't wait to run CAIN for my group in the new year
Hey Zak, i'd like to give you some audio advice- I think your current setup peaks pretty hard when you are putting emphasis on something or exhaling. It's that whistling-like sound. To mitigate that, you could try mounting a pop-filter to your handheld (there's ones with little clamp arms) or using a Limiter/Compressor in post to cut off that range, though it might be enough to pinpoint the exact range at which your mic peaks and reducing the volume in that range using an advanced EQ addon.
Gah, i was dying for this episode and its already doooone. Time to watch it a second time. Fantastic job, as others have said you sell the world and lore *so well*. I love the energy you bring to each video, its phenomenal. Keep it up!
The repeated references to Far Cry 5 have me like 👀. I hadn’t really been attracted to the Idol before, but now I’ve got ideas for how to run it. My brain is going “Far Cry 5 meets Smile 2”.
@Zaktact I wonder if you would play a Lancer campaign with a Cain side quest component? Highly specialized team of Lancers who are also Exorcists and are only called in when paranormal events are happening in the field. They are outside the Union bureaucracy and answer only to a "unnamed" Administrator and GALSIM orders.
I mean, if I can ever get the scheduling nightmare dealt with, I'm definitely going to be making NHPs run on Sin logic. RA is basically a LORD that turned Deimos into its Palace and has a Kingdom that engulfs whatever is planet it appears above.
I feel like idols love the internet I can imagine it musing with the exorcists about how perfect a place the internet is for it so easy to reach out but keeping that perfect distance keeping there adoring fans wanting. As an ambush is sprung there adoring fans and acolytes reach to rip you apart to get the attention of there idol
My poor PC’s choose to rush into the entrance of the first stage of the palace and when I say it almost just wiped one of my players out. Yeeesh but the idol is by far my favorite sin to run next to the hound so far
Great video! I'm looking forvard to your Hound video, as I'm preparing Hound sin for the next mission. I'm making it in the slums, where the police doesn't show up and my players will have to navigate this labyrynth while being hunted. I'm interested in your view on hound, since your videos got me into Cain
Not mechanically, but huge implications for the actions and capability of the sin. Type one is going off it's driving emotion and instincts of the category. Type two might have some more humanlike qualities in it's thought, but is still going off of those driving emotions. Type three has a binder in control which doesn't have to give in or follow those emotions or instincts. Each sin can differ in their own capabilities, but giving specific directions instead of instinct makes a huge difference in the right hands. In short mechanics don't really change, but the way it acts can change significantly.
@@Zaktact A binder controlling an Idol would be an opportunity to play something even more layered: something like a toxic agents control over a celebrity, or a oppressive show parent over a child star. Hell, I could see a corporation having some bizarre infernal contract going that uses a Type 3 Idol to make money or wield global influence (perhaps not realizing just how dangerous a thing they have)
I don't see why cleaning up after an idol hunt would be so hard for CAIN. Just put out a deepfake of the idol saying something racist and BOOM! Idol gets canceled.
Once you kill the Idol, the memory of it is wiped from its (remaining) victims’ minds. The problem is the information it revealed along the way, like the local police managed to find out about CAIN while investigating the Idol’s enemies. And given the sheer reach & subtle influence of the Idol, it can be hard to know for sure you’ve gotten everything in your cleanup…
So it varies. At it's most basic you can grant an affliction as part of a Sins threat (which is a once per round heavier attack/action), some domains or traces might also spread them in different ways, but this leaves the third version of spreading affliction. It could be a tension filling up, an environmental threat, a poor answer to a source less question (A.K.A. the third option is custom).

Fear of the Other as a way to lure them in is fantastic.
The Idol has the most dangerous ability: taking away your paycheck. Thanks for the video
didn't realize Tom Bloom played fear and hunger, that's basically what marriage is in that game

I’ve had an idea of an Idol possessing the neglectful mother of a little girl and giving her the “family” she’s always wanted.
Parasocial Relationships as a raid boss, got it.
Even as someone who read through the CAIN core book. These videos are a must watch for me they sell the atmosphere of each sin so damn well.
"hold my darlings" is a situation i've dealt with a lot in D&D, with the general response being "they have more health? do more damage then. their underlings wont last forever."
