Great vid Dude. Had one of these babies for 15 years, it's great fun. Haven't used it in a while, but your vids have inspired me to have another go! luv from London
I still have my DR-5. I think I got it back in the mid or late nineties. I used it the other day to make a beat for a rapper/singer. One of my friends still brags on how well I could operate the machine. People at the studio were surprised at the sounds and patterns I could create with it. I used to have two DR-5's. Since each machine only has two outputs, I would sync them up using the midi device to gain four outputs. This allowed for more control when I sent each sound to a different track.
hey BG EAST EASY STREET MOXY GET WITH IT DON'T BLAME ME BECAUSE I'M A KING OF THE NIKE DYNASTY LITTLE LEBRON KING JAMES GOT A NEW PAIR OF SHOES FROM HIS MAMA & SHE SAID DON'T COMMIT SUICIDE I GET A TELL YOU BABY BOY KING JAMES YOUR BIG MAMA DIED BUT YOU GOT A RING CLEVELAND CAVELIERS.
Awesome! You uploaded these right on time dude! Been trying to figure out how to use my dr-5 as a midi controller in ableton hopefully these vids shed some insight.
Recorded my first album with this one back in the nineties. It sucked, but it helped me develop my own sound. Especially the church organ has later become my trademark. I still use the sounds "Warmth" and "Fantasy", as I can't find something that sound similar in my vst plug-ins.
@7000ironman - I am not a connoisseur of music samples, and (of course) the ones on the DR-5 are somewhat dated. But I think most of the sounds on the device are quite good and usable. Of course the quality of the sound/PA system that you pump the sounds through will have a dramatic effect as well. In my opinion, no one unit can ever replace a real musician but the DR-5 does give you some of options to give the samples and loops more feeling (via settings like velocity, swing, quantasize, etc)
I bought one of these new A LONG time ago. It got stolen after I'd had it for a couple of months. Functioned perfectly as a musical hands on diary aimed at guitarists. I just snagged one on ebay for £40 :) Just brushing up after about 20 years.
I loved this thing in the 90s. It was brilliant to set up the keypad like a guitar neck and they should still do it. All those buttons could be customized so you had like several slightly different versions of the same drum sound to add a more human feel -- I could get some Bonham-like sounds out of this.
@SAMURATA Sure, no problem. Eventually I hope to add to them with a video on MIDI setup... if I ever get the time to figure it out for myself that is! lol. Thanks for the comment.
After the DR-5 the line changed considerably. Subsequent models lost a great number of features (but are still great devices, they are just far more focused on Guitar and Drums). This is part of the reason why the DR-5 still has a very sizable following even though it is a fairly old model. But to answer you question, I think the DR family is in the 800 series by now... I don't really know enough about them (beyond the above) to give you an opinion as to which would be the best. Sorry.
@7000ironman Yeah, It happens alot. However, you can make a battery cover. Mainly, you create two parts with a discarded remote battery cover clasp that will fit (nothing special, just needs the correct width) and one with the two tiny plastic prongs. Then use a bent spring (shaped into: @_@ ) and put it all together by cutting some slots to hold the modded spring. Then use duct tape and tweak until it fits. Last mark area and gorilla glue and re-tape and let dry. Hope this helps.
Hello, I own 4 of these, recently switched from digit recorder to logic. I'm trying to track pre programmed songs I've made via my dr5, my question is how to I transfer these songs into logic so it Syn's with logics tempo/click, and how do I get it to recognize my accents and decay as well as time changes?
@walks222 Thanks for the comment, I am glad you found this helpful. I totally know what you mean about the manual, it's useful but not a very interesting read. ;-) Cheers!
Not sure what you are referring to... but you will need a standard 1/4" Male/Male guitar cord (if connecting it to a guitar) and another to connect it to an AMP (or just plug any set of headphones with a 1/8 male stereo plug into the headphone jack). If using an optional single footswitch then another M/M 1/4" mono (or if it is a dual footswitch, then a M/M 1/4" stereo cord). Just look on the back/side of the unit and whatever you are connecting it to. Thanks for watching commenting!
Sorry I do not know if the Line 6 Pod will work with the DR5, I would try some of the Line 6 Pod forums and see if anyone has tried it. Thanks for the post and best of luck getting your rig setup. Please post back with results so others can benefit from you experience once you give it a try (or not as the case may be). Cheers!
Pretty much everything i recorded was with THE Boss DR-5, a Yamaha FX 550 guitar processor, a 4 track Korg cassette recorder (couldn't afford anything better...), a BC Rich Warlock and later a BC Rich Ironbird, back in the 90's. It was so much fun putting stuff together, the DR-5 was so incredibly easy to use, and incredibly, it actually sounded much better then most Metal demos recorded in studios. Go figure. All guitar went through the DR-5 amp simulator, no real amp and mic involved :D Go to my channel and listen to some, if you're into Doom Metal stuff.
Is it easy to integrate the tracks/song you make with the DR-5 to the Yamaha PSR-350 ? (my PSR-350 has midi in and midi out and has a 6-track sequencer.
@CalisCool Thanks for the comment. There is alot of technical info about MIDI stuff in the user manual... which is available at Roland's site as a free download. If you get it working, please come back and post any tips you have for setting it up. Cheers!
I USED MY DR-5 AT WOODSTOCK 94 DURING THE NINE INCH NAILS BAND WHEN SOMEONE OR TWO GOT MOSHED/ STOMPED TO DEATH. I also had a Rockman. ROLLAND BOSS: WHY DON'T YOU CREATE A dr-5 Rockman by 9? I'll get with you. I am an American Saudi Israeli & the guy to the left is King Muhammad bin Salman's Father King Salman bin Abdulaziz' farher King Abdulaziz al Saud. In fact I'm actually Samoa Sam Max Freaightrain 93', 94', 95' Arena Vodoo world chapion footballs.
Tralornik, thanks for the vid brother!! Boss should've had this type of learning tool when the unit came out. Can you tell me if I can "piggy back"(?) a Line 6 POD to the DR5? Will my pc identify the DR5 when I go out of the DR5 and in to my laptop? Yes, I know it's a stupid question, but I don't want to ruin either the pc or the DR5. Thanks again Nik!!
@7000ironman - Yes the DR-5 does run off of batteries. It uses 6xAA batteries. However, I would make sure to ask the seller if the battery cover is included in the auction (since it is easily lost) and also make sure to ask if the battery compartment is free from corrosion. Oftentimes people either put batteries in them and then forget to take them out when storing, or they switch to a power cord and forget to put the battery cover back on (it is not attached). Thanks for posting!
I have this. I like how it works, but I don't like a vast majority of the sounds. The electric guitar is terrible, just listen to it on the intro. Does anyone know of a good sound module I can run midi to get good high quality sounds?
@markschellhaas No problem, thanks for commenting. Don't forget to download the PDF manual and the 2-page PDF quick start guide from Roland/Boss site, IMHO they will help you get the most out of the device once you get the basics from the video. Cheers!
Wendy, I believe the DR-5 can use a variety of standard footswitches. I would check eBay from time to time. The one mentioned in the manual is the FS-5U... However, I am fairly certain other (less expensive foot switches) can be used. See page 10-2 (or page 112 in the PDF manual) for more info. Cheers!
I appreciate this! I still have my Dr. Rhythm (gold!), but my VHS 'How To' tape has long since succumbed to age and humidity.
I just found my dads old DR-5, this is great!
DR5 is really amazing, just very cool.
Great vid Dude.

That's because it's old school.
There's no school like the old school. 8^)

I used an old keyboard foot switch and it works great. Have had mine for about 15 years.
GREAT STUFF! However--your vocal is so muddy I can hardly hear you.
Excellent tutorial...thank you.
That is a very cool idea. I might give that a try if I ever pick up another one! Cheers and thanks for the post/info!

Indeed!
@SAMURATA Sure, no problem. Eventually I hope to add to them with a video on MIDI setup... if I ever get the time to figure it out for myself that is! lol. Thanks for the comment.
I had one of these. It was great. You could even plug your guitar in and it would try to turn it to midi.

This is awesome and timely for me, thank you. I've just this morning acquired my first ever DR5 so you'll be my teacher: much appreciated.
Awesome! Glad to help! DR5 Rocks !!!
best video yet!!! cool bro

Hi, Where can I get a foot switch for a DR-5
Many thanks for the video. Just purchased one on eBay. I learnt more in 15 minutes than reading the manual for an hour.
Yeah, the same for me. In 2024.
Thank you for these useful videos...

So what cords do i need?
@kennova01 Glad it helped you out. Thanks for the comment!
