    I like the Distortion over the other Duncans. Keith Merrow's comparison video has done the rounds several times to a lot of luthiers I know. I recently play on a friends Lace DB7 and it slays EVERYTHING. Check them out sometime!

    ahh, thanks for the reply.. that is a great explanation between the two pickups... i bought a Dimarzio super distortion pickup in the early 80s and was listening to Maiden, Priest, Loudness, Dio, Ozzy etc.. thrash was still obscure back then. I bought a Jackson RR guitar and had Duncans in them but I am not sure which ones were in there.. and it created a lot of feedback so i took them out and gave them to a guy who started playing guitar. I put in LH-150 pickups from ESP.

    yes. duncans are on a lever where nothing is objectively better. distortion + sh2 jazz works very well, also works well with a 59 or a sh10 full shred neck version. the most famous duncan combo is sh4 +sh2, but i prefer the sh6 to the sh4 (and to the emg81 as well)

    there is no such thing as a "better option". always depends on you, your guitar and your amp. i personally love my full shreds to death. what are you looking for, for what guitar? full shred has more dynamics, more bass and lower mids and a medium to high output with the added warmth of AlNiCo magnets (it's lead tone is incredibly beautiful!), the distortion has more treble and upper midrange, also a hecklot of output. due to ceramic magnets it's tight, but also a bit metallic in the top end.

    If you want a similar sounding pickup to the one Ola's using, i would recommend you looking into the Seymor Duncan Full Shreds, or of course the Seymor Duncan Distortions he's showing the the video. Other great sounding pickups for more modern and "djent" sounding metal, would be the 'Bare Knuckle Aftermaths', which i am currently using and loving. The attack and clarity they offer is unmatched, imo

  • @givemeajackson
    @givemeajackson 11 років тому

    as i said, for metal rhythm playing you won't use the neck pu anyways, and for leads they sound great and defined, even with heavy distortion. tightness isn't really a concern for a neck pu imo, warmth and fullness are much more important. both would be great choices as well.

  • @givemeajackson
    @givemeajackson 11 років тому

    just fine, and very similar to this. in neck thru constuction the wings play a rather minor role. basswood is going to cut the treble a bit compared to the ash used here.

  • @givemeajackson
    @givemeajackson 11 років тому

    since you don't play rythm on the neck pu, go for something versatile and warm sounding. i think the dimarzio air norton is one of the best neck pickups, very good cleans, and a godly lead tone (petrucci used an air norton in the neck position of his ibanet guitars, and you know how fucking awesome his lead tone is) it's bubbly and clear sounding. other than that, i love the full shred neck pickup. i'd personally always use a AlNiCo equipped pickup in the neck position over a ceramic magnet PU

    Hey, Ola,what speakers do you run currently in your 2x12? Is it two Governors or still the mix of Governor and Wizard? Do you find it easier micing a cab with only one type of speaker? Cause I sure as hell find it very difficult to get the right sound with more than one speaker model in the same cab.
    Very nice song by the way, reminds me of Bolt Thrower with a modern Viking touch. :)

  • @givemeajackson
    @givemeajackson 12 років тому

    dont know a vid, but the DD way more of a modern metal pickup than the super distortion is. the super distortion is the nr1 iron maiden pickup, and it's made pretty much without changes since '72. more of a classic pickup despite its name (wich has to be looked at in relation to its age). awesome for shred, classic metal (pretty much every NWoBHM guitarist used them), prog etc, but for all out thrash or death the duncan is probably the way to go in this case.
