  • The video series, "On The Farm", from the Center For Pioneer Life in Yancey County, North Carolina. This episode features Yancey County native, Dylan Wilson, as the educator on haystacks. This dying art form is still being practiced at the Center For Pioneer Life in a truly authentic and functional manner.
The music used in this video is by Yancey County resident, Bruce Greene. The video features his rendition of "The Old Black Cat Couldn't Catch A Rat" from his album "River in Time". For more of Bruce's music, follow this link: www.brucegreene.net/

We’ve all become so independent living , thinking that life would be easier with technology and we’re moving too fast

A haystack didn't require a bank loan to pay off the costs of all the equipment. These were times of self sufficient people.

Hay stacks using a pole is the best way to stack hay. The hay is keept almost 100% percent intact. In comparision the bales are expensive and result in a lot of waste. Using a pole and a podium you ca stack even 10000lbs of hay. The hay will preserve for at least 5 years.

it’s only in these modern times that we raise children to send them away when they grow up and be independent. that is a new philosophy the old people used to raise their children to stay with them and build their community not to leave and be independent

I’m interested in doing this to bale graze all winter. How do these handle high winds? We get 80mph. I’d hate for all our hard work to just blow away to Kansas….

I wonder how much the use of hay balers is due to the demand to pay property taxes.

Unfortunately, you're right. Property taxes force us to make our property maximum productive, hence, the old fashion ways cannot compete.
