Biotechnology has been used by humans for centuries. Using yeast to make bread rise is one early example.
This didn't expand into medicine until the 1940s, when penicillin was invented. 1970 marked the beginning of modern biotech, when things like arthritis, blood disorders, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, and cancer.
