  • In this interview from 1984, Lily Tomlin talks about All of Me, her film with Steve Martin, the character Ernestine from Laugh-In, Carl Reiner, and working with Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda in 9 to 5.
From 1974 to 2000, Canada’s Brian Linehan conducted thousands of in-depth interviews with the greatest actors and directors from over 60 years of film history. His programs City Lights and Linehan have not been seen since they first aired and are now available for the first time for licensing. Linehan, a stylishly gifted broadcaster, meticulously did all his own research and that, coupled with his knowledge and passion about film and filmmaking, puts him in a class all by himself.
With 20,000 hours of music footage spanning 90 years and thousands of hours of in-depth interviews with the 20th century’s icons of Film and Television, Politics, Comedy, Literature, Art, Science, Fashion and Sports, Reelin’ In The Years Productions is now the World’s Premier Source For Footage Of Musical Artists, Entertainers & History Makers.

Brian Linehan, who passed away in 2004, left his entire estate to The Brian Linehan Charitable Foundation to provide training, work opportunities and promotion for young actors of exceptional talent. All of the income of his Foundation is donated to not-for-profit institutions for that purpose. In the decade since his death, recipients of the Foundation’s support have included extraordinary young actors affiliated with the Canadian Film Centre, The National Screen Institute of Canada, the Stratford Shakespearean Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, which, since Brian's passing, has preserved and housed Brian's personal archive and tape library.

I have been a fan of Lily Tomlin, early on, from watching her on 60s, 70s variety shows, talk shows, and Laugh In. Transition into to the big screen blew me away in seeing some more of her versatility. But I just realized, at 72 years of age I knew little of who she is and what an enormous, wide ranging, talented actress she was.
I didn't have a sense of her strength and depth of character until I recently seeing her on an old Johnny Carson you tube video. She answered questions about herself and her career candidly. She and Johnny did an improvisation, of a scene from a play. Miss Tomlin also did a monologue from a one woman show she did, if I recall correctly. She was amazing and powerful. As her segment with Johnny continued, it seemed he became uncertain how to interact with this force of nature and maybe she with him. To take something she said to Roseanne about being shy in meeting a personality she admired. Maybe it was two shy people, her and Johnny, meeting for the first time and not having enough time to to establish a comfortable relationship.

Brian is by far the greatest interviewer there ever was or has been. He’s always so prepared and has a wealth of knowledge on his subject that makes for what seems like an effortless interaction between two friends. He was also well liked and trusted by so many in the industry that they would share with him stories that with their permission he would then bring up during his interviews later on.

He was the best and still is. Some people are just used to fluff straight to the point interviews, or glamour interviews. RIP Brian, thanks for all the great work.

I love that line the real leaders teach people to lead themselves . im going remember that. She seemed so smart & so poised. And the interviewer seemed kinda pompous & hoity.

I enjoy and admire Lily Tomlin so much but my god, Linehan is soooo pretentious. His manner of speaking is so affected. And his need to assert himself as the smartest person in the room is just weird. I strongly believe celebs only went on his show because they had to promote something and there were few outlets for that in Canada.

He was the best. No bullshit, he studied his subjects before doing any interview. Better than the fluff bull they cal interviews today.
