    Sweetwater let me film in their new store for a few days so I took the oportunity to finally try out one of the new Fender Tone Master amps, as an added bonus I had them haul out the tube version for a side by side comparison. Which sounds best? Which should you buy? well thats all very subjective. Tune in to decide for yourself.

    Finally! They did it! I heard the first amp and shook my head. “Solid state amps always sound thin and lifeless” I thought. The second one sounded so much more balanced and full, I thought it was obvious. And accepted I had to stick with tubes. How happy I was to find out I was wrong!

    14:55 the tube amp is compressing the signal, the solid state amp is leaving it open so you wind up with more highs and fizzy bits.

      The highs are super annoying. It's too processed to my ears. Without being in the room and feet away, I just can't around that sterile sound. It lacks character.

      @@joellebrodeur1015 it will only get better. Solid state has come very far and will continue to improve. Tubes will be around for some time but eventually they may be phased out due to production costs/materials. Fender is trying to get ahead of that by producing the Tonemaster series and I think they're doing a great job. I look forward to what improvements they'll make

    In the last 2 years since they brought out the Tonemaster, the verdict is in. And it is a thumbs up for the Tonemaster. The slight difference that you pointed out is completely outweighed (pun intended) by the advantages that the TM offers, such as the attenuator, the line out and the lighter weight would be enough to sell it over the tube version.
    But then Fender has also added the ability to add new firmware to the TM and change it's characteristics, such as removing the bright cap or changing to the blonde version (and back again).
    Companies have been dicking around with this concept since the 80's and it feels like Fender finally found the right recipe and also gave the user some unique features and abilities to fine tune your own sound.
    My dreams of going from my current Super Champ (which is a solid performer) to a Princeton reissue have gone out the window. I'm now all-in on a new Deluxe Reverb TM for this Xmas, and I'll have enough dough left over to sweeten the deal with a couple pedals so that I can "Surf Out!"

    • @gkott78
      @gkott78 2 роки тому +2

      So I have both the TM Suoer and a Princeton 65 Reissue. I absolutely love both. The Princeton has a sweetspot in the volume that I can't get to when my kids are home, hence the purchase of a Tonemaster. The TM sounds unreal and is extremely convincing. I have no want for a tube Super Reverb. I will say the Princeton "feels" more organic. The TM feels good but the real tube Princeton is just a little more reactive and has better feel under the fingers when playing. You can't go wrong with either but the tone master is more flexible due to the attenuator. Play both if you can before you decide on one. I had the Princeton first and I will never let it go. I also had a super champ x2, and yes it's a solid performer. However both the TM or the Princeton put it to shame. You'd be happy with either.

      I agree with all you have said here regarding the more "organic" feel of the Princeton "tube" vs the TM (BTW, I'm going for the Deluxe Reverb version), and I still feel the pull towards the Princeton.
      But after all is considered, and I have played them all, I am going for the TM, for all of the advantages listed so far.

    Ryan, Laddie. I just picked up a new T.M. Super. I'm 63 and (originally) from Glasgow. My first amp was a Super Reverb head into (wait for it), a 2x15 Fender bass cab. It was the late 70's in Scotland and I was in a (combo) AC/DC and Black Sabbath cover band. The sound was massive. I traded the head and always wanted the grand sound of the 4x10 combo. But me lower back kept me from it. This amp is a dream come to. And in yer video, some things sound identical, some not. But as we know, if you lined ten different Fender Super Reverb tube amps up in a row, I promise you they'll all have differences. Love yer content. Haste Ye Back, Ryan. 🍀🎸🍀

    I prefer the Tone Master, the other is much more expensive with many disadvantages. For one, how much are replacement tubes going to cost 20 years from now?
    I did not hear a lot of difference between the amps and sometimes small adjustments (and/or pedals) can change which one sounds better. The TM sounds great and the weight and the attenuator and the $700 savings add up to a win for me.
    I admit I am not a die-hard tube guy, I currently play through two Mustangs, a LT-25 at home and GTX100 out so I am a Fender modeler amp lover. Can't beat the GTX100 for the price, period.

      I tend to agree. Playing a good, modern, modelling amp is way different than any cheaper solid state from not even too long ago. I have some Vox amps; AC15, AC10, AC4tv and I love them. I also have a Spark amp and I love that as well. It's reactive like my throat be amps and I'd imagine these tone masters are reactive much in the same way their counterpart is since they are directly modelling only one amp and it's what's considered to be the best attributes from vintage examples. Come to think of it, I bet that's why it sounds different from the tube variant here... Put a vintage super reverb next to a reissue and you'll hear a difference and put two Supers next to each other and your likely gonna hear a small difference--well, not unheard of (pun intended) at least.
      Fun fact: I was watching a Surfrajettees video when I got the notification for this video. I noticed his shirt too.

      I think you are being highly optimistic if you think any digital amp will stand the test of time better than analog technology. Tubes may get a bit more expensive as time goes on, but any decent amp tech will be able to keep the tube amp working for you for decades... The digital one? Amp techs may not even agree to service them. And how many tube amps from the 50s, 60s, 70s do you still see kicking around on the market compared to digital modelling amps from the 90s? How many people do you see still using computers from even 20 years ago? How many computers have ended up in landfill compared to vintage tube amps?Just saying. If durability and low maintenance are big issues to you, I'd suggest you consider analog solid state options. Orange Crush amps have nailed tube tone. Quilter Labs have as well, and they have that Fenderish sound. I have an early 90s Fender solid state amp that has been one of my main workhorse amps for thirty years, even though I also used lot of tube amps.

      @@darwinsaye I'd agree but with a caveat. A tube amp and a cup mouter are way different. You can't even use a computers that's more than 10 years old. Shit, Fenders current Super Champ X2 was obsolete the year it came out. This really depends on the type of modelling amp one has. The tone masters are modelling but not like a Mustang, or a katana, spark etc... I agree that a tube amp is serviceable and you likely won't get a tech to fix a tone master. Is it reliable? We don't know. For that reason I do believe they should be much less money. You're right but so much remains to be seen really. The tone masters sound and behave like tube amps too. I like the idea behind them. I wish they were more reasonably priced though. They could make their money back for R and D over time with sales versus trying to recoup right away.

    if you switched the tags on these amps, alot of tube guys would say they prefer the tonemaster LOL.
    Ive A/B'ed these (the twin version) as well and the margin of difference easily fits within the gap between one tube amp and another (and another and another...) as you noted.
    one thing to keep in mind on these fender amps, including the TMs is that the tone knobs do ALOT. Even a half step from 5 to 4.5 on the treble can really dial out high end that may be bugging you. it was a pleasant suprise to me how well they work. you can dial out a slightly irritating high on a driven tone w/o going too dark or muddy. its impressive. on the other side, hitting that bright switch can make a pleasant difference when needed. between that sculpability and the other flexible benefits of less weight and an attenuator makes the TM a winner. not the exact same, but a def. winner. You can actually sit in a room and explore the sound of a dimed or near dimed twin without destroying your ears or having the cops come to your house... when has THAT ever happened?

  • @musicmatty67
    @musicmatty67 2 роки тому +12

    Wow I actually thought the second amp sounded better and was the tube amp. Here’s the true dilemma that I think most people are faced with when buying a digital lamp. Once something goes down on that amp and it’s outside of it’s warranty, it’s my understanding that the amp gets tossed and it’s not worth fixing. Unlike a solid-state amp, a digital amp is very complex and involved and not worth fixing. This is what I heard 10 years ago when Fender started releasing their famous mustang amps which I still have from 10 years ago and is still going strong thank God. If I’m wrong here, someone please correct me and explain why. At the end of the day if you’re paying over $1000 for what may be a disposable amp, I’m not sure that I would invest in that myself.

    • @bciecko1
      @bciecko1 2 роки тому +2

      That's the question right... How long will they last? Can they be fixed by anyone except Fender? Is the cost worth getting it fixed? It doesn't need upgrades or software refreshes so it's sorta like a SS version of a digital amp. I do think their cost is too high. They don't have a reliability record to fall back on. The best way to justify a cost of one would be to buy a used one. This is scary though since you'll forfeit any warranty that way. If one buys from, say, Guitar Center as a used amp there would be an option for warranty. Worth it then to buy used.

      The tube version he's playing has a printed circuit board, so if anything breaks on either one of these two amps, it's kaput. That's why people pay $3500 for a hand wired fender or maybe a boutique. Me, I'm in love with the Fargen Blackbird 30 with one tube removed. Black face tones but MUCH better, plus if I break a potentiometer at a bar, I can simply solder another one in rather than tossing the whole thing in the garbage.

    You're right about the pedals bringing out some differences. They both sounded close clean, but as soon as you turned on the fuzz it was very clear to me which was the tube amp and which wasn't (tube has natural and pleasing compression, Tonemaster too fizzy). I do think the Tonemaster has a place. The weight factor is a big one in a 4x10 amp. Ultimately though, the sound for me is number 1. I'm skeptical Tonemaster will hold their value over time, and once they inevitably break I doubt they will be easy to fix. I've acquired enough knowledge to work on my tube amps, but once a dsp chip goes I doubt it will be easy or cost effective to replace. You got to figure there will be a Tonemaster v2, v3, etc at some point too which could hurt resale value. On the other hand, with tubes getting harder and harder to find and more expensive ... I guess its nice we can have something close that doesn't need 'em :-)

    Back in 70's and the 80's I could hear the difference between a solid state and a valve/tube amp. When I say this I mean "BLIND". Without seeing the amp I was plugged into I would know. Not because I was I tone expert, but because there was just a lot of difference. Back then valve/tube was the best no doubt. Then when we hit 2000, doing the same thing with a solid state and valve/tube was not as easy. But could get more right than wrong. In the last few years I really wouldn't get ANY right in a blind test. It has to be BLIND, because your eyes take over from your ears, if you KNOW WHICH IS WHICH. We ALL have the "EXPENSIVE IS BEST" brain set, from guitars, PUPs, and amps.
    Lets get REAL on the pros and cons, valve/tube amps have ONE pro, they sound good. Look at the cons... 1 HEAVY, 2 EXPENSIVE. 3 INCONSISTANT, you don't always get the same sound. Playing in a cold place/warm place, you will not get the same sound. If you gig you will know this. 4 HIGH MAINTENANCE (again expensive), those valves/tube blow more often than you would think and always at the wrong times. 5 LONG WARM UP (20 to 30 mins plus.). 6 SOUND BEST AT HIGH VOLUME, NOT AS GOOD AT LOWER VOLUMES. Solid State have NONE of these problems and the fact is NOW SOLID STATE ACTUALLY SOUND BETTER THAN Valve/Tube Amps. But if you have more money than sense keep telling your self that VALVE/TUBE Amps are better than SOLID STATE.

    I think it's the way a digital amp fails to grab the note at the attack. It's in the dynamics. They still just can't get the natural acoustics down. It sounds like the "idea" of how it should sound.

    The tube version produces a fuller, enveloping overall sound... it sounds like a tube amp. The tonemaster brings about 80% of what the tubes are bringing overall, similar, but clearly different. With adjustments and programmable downloads, you can probably get closer, but not true to the tube tones. Still a great amp and the attenuation available on the Tonemaster makes it more versatile for playing at home as well as ear-bleeding gigs... and the weight relief is undeniably a benefit. Agree with you on the Reverb comments

  • @mikeenos4040
    @mikeenos4040 2 роки тому +1

    There are some factors to consider.. every tube amp is going to sound different, if you ten tube supers each one would sound different that just the way it is ,and the reason why is the parts available in the assembly line differ in quality depending where fender gets them, also the bias and groove tubes the use are inconsistent, I am a tech and have done a lot of biasing and tube swaps ,example if you retube with JJs which is the norm around my neck of the woods and your bias setting of hot medium or cold makes a difference in sound.
    How have said all that
    The plus on the tonemaster besides being light weight is the consistency of the amps. They will all come from the factory sounding the same stock with no filmware updates.the only factor and this is with all amps is new speakers not being broke in.. but if don't count the speakers the tone master shines,.
    Fender has done a great job of matching the tone cararistics of the super reverb and its consistent. And some bells and whistles like power settings , cab out .
    I personally think and this just my opinion ,the amp is priced a little high, I would bet if you opened one up you would see hardly nothing inside probably a small module and ribbon cables going to the control panel. And that lead to another question ....are they fixable? Or are the the new TVs out there there basically none repairable in other words if cost more to fix than it's worth so they become disposable..
    Only time will tell...
    I would like to have one ,I think they sound great ,I like the Di and the attenuator is very usable.
    I may look later on they are just came out and none on the used marker yet maybe you can save alittle buying used, but to me 1200 bucks is high for the amp and Fender getting that for it so that's that.
    Anyways I like the amp like try one out for a month ,get thru the honeymoon stage and see if I still like it..

I had a BFSR back in the 70's (I'm very old!!) and I don't recall why I sold/traded it off. Yeah, I do.. the suckers are HEAVY!!! At least 65#, maybe a bit more. I really, really like the sounds coming out of the TMSR that you were demoing here. Surprisingly, I cannot demo one near me as all the shops don't have any in stock. If I buy one it's going to be on faith and YT Videos. BTW, that's not necessarily bad, let me tell ya'... I don't play out anymore so getting yet another amp (I already have 10) is just stoopid.... but I may yet get one anyway after brewing over it for a bit more time. NICE REVIEW!! 👍👍

    Turn the bright switch on in the tube amp and see if it can emulate the bright reverb sounds on the tonemaster% then try to adjust the tonemaster to see if it can emulate the darker reverb tone of the tube amp sound. In other words can each one emulate the tone of the other. Then go and compare both of them to an Alessandro modified Super reverb RI. You will be amazed at-the Alessandro.

    I played one of these next to the real tube counterpart and they sound similar but when you play them dry I noticed that the tube version has more punch and attack. When using reverb this is less apparent. The reverb sounds very similar in both. I then played the tone master next to the katana 100 artist and the katana had way more punch and life to it... except the reverb sounds a bit better on the tone master... but again the katana sounded much better for some reason. But I need to try them again with different guitars. I have never been much of a fan of the twin reverb amps though because they don't have as much punch and attack and fullness as let's say a fender blues DeVille tube amp or Peavy classic 50 for clean playing... but they do have a certain reverb sparkle to them which is cool for some music. There are definitely benefits to the tone master but I'm not sure I would pay over $1000k for it. I would probably take a katana 100 for half the price with more connectivity and punch or a real tube amp... but I do understand the benefit of this amp being so light weight. But I just used a dolly to lug my tube amp around so I don't ruin my back. It's still a pain but the tone of my tube amp is perfect...

    Be equal differences between 2 tube sr and the tm and sr. And on the fuzz front i think it sounds bad into a clean amp and the tube sr was no exception. Ive heard tone masters with fuzz being run behind an od and it sounded great.

    I think the speakers may be the biggest difference, or at least a correctable difference. You could swap two of the four speakers in the Tonemaster for perhaps alnico's and round out the tone and only up the weight a skosh. You would still be a few hundred bucks under the cost of the tube, with the added power scaling and other features.

    The only thing that bothers me about the Tone Master Super Reverb is that it cannot handle distortion at extremely high volumes. It’s hard to suscribe, but something happens to it when really pushed where it seems to lose clarity in the notes and becomes “flubby”. For all other purposes it performs and sounds fine, and is my preferred amp for gigging. If I need an amp to handle high gain then I lug my 65 Reissue Twin Reverb.
