    I hope ye all like this as for me this ride is pure eye candy. This weeks vid comes from the visually stunning serpentine cliff hanger that is the unique Col d'Aubisque in the French Pyrenees. This col is definitely one of my favorites. Along with Tourmalet this pass is only open from June (sometimes late May) to December but if in the area it's not to be missed...

    Have you done any off road?

    • @RoadTrooper
      @RoadTrooper  5 років тому

      I used to do a lot of trail riding when I lived in Spain, not so much now that I'm living in Ireland..

    • @eolovento

      @@RoadTrooper hi, thanks for your answer. I'm leaving London now. The worst for bikes :)
      But I meant on Pyrenees did you go any offroad ? If so how did you find them? Simply trying?

    • @RoadTrooper
      @RoadTrooper  5 років тому

      @@eolovento I've done some of Trans Pyrenees Trail, some of the Camino de Santiago trails, most of which are fairly easy and I'm not a serious off roader. However I did get into a bit of trouble a few times because of the weather. It can rain A LOT in the Pyrenees which can dramatically change the trails which was a problem a few times as I was riding on my own wearing Anakee 3 tyres which are 90/10 road biased tyres for light off road use. The Pyrenees has every grade of trail/off road type imaginable so you've either got to be prepared for anything or be prepared to turn around and go back ;) Also keep a very close eye on the weather there as it can change dramatically, far more so than the Alps. It can be cold, wet and miserable on the French side and 26C and sunny 30km away on the Spanish side. I've also started my days there with perfect 18-20C sunny weather and ended my day in a snow storm at -9C - and that was in June. I've also seen flash floods taking away roads and hailstones the size of golf balls in July, all of which came make an easy dirt road a freaking nightmare, I've no doubt it'll be plain sailing in August, but still keep a close eye on the weather as it can really catch you out in the Pyrenees. If you are trial riding you've also got to be aware of 2 things, firstly the speed limit on Pyrenees trails is 30km/h and trust me, it's enforced on the Spanish side. You can meet the Guardia Civil in the the most out of the way places lol. Secondly, it's August and dry season. Many forest trails will now likely be out of bounds for motorized traffic due to the fire risk, mostly on the Spanish side, you can face an astronomical fine for riding in a fire risk zone, there should be signs, but if in doubt check with the locals, at your hotel or tourist office etc.

      @@RoadTrooper that's great information thank you. So off roading it's tollerate if not fire risk area? And what about free camping?

    • @RoadTrooper
      @RoadTrooper  5 років тому

      @@eolovento Off roading is most definitely tolerated. There are loads of companies and guides offering off road motorcycle and 4x4 tours across the Pyrenees so it's not a problem at all. Spain has tens of 1000's of kilometers of dirt roads and trails, it's one of the best countries in Europe for trail riding - as long as there is no fire risk and ban during the dry season, usually August-Sept/Oct. I believe those bans are set by regional counsels, so the rules/bans can be different in Navarra, Aragon etc. The rules are enforced by both the Guardia Civil and game/park rangers on the Spanish side, there's a lot of 'em about and they dont have much of a sense of humor lol. The fire risk is huge there so they've good reason to be tough on the law. On more thing, if you are riding in a large group some areas have a rule that you split up into small groups of 3 or 4 with a gap of about half a km between each group and hikers/hill walkers "generally" have right of way. Basically you need to treat hikers the same as any pedestrian, just common sense stuff. There's loads of cheap camping and you can do free "wild" camping - BUT DEFINITELY NO FIRES, you'll likely get arrested for that at this time of year!!! There are also very big fines for leaving rubbish behind, again just common sense stuff. If you venture anywhere near Pamplona you should definitely ride around the Bardenas Real National Park, its a dirt road through a desert, it's freaking amazing, it's like riding in Arizona or New Mexico - ua-cam.com/video/bp-hg8rwXCs/v-deo.html

    Dennis, what's the secret to adding an audio track without running afoul of the copyright monitors? I just received a GoPro for Christmas and, partly inspired by your vids, have been learning to do some. So far, two have posted to UA-cam with the only problem being they cannot be seen in Germany. I posted one today that, apparently, can't be seen by anyone but me. See my post on the IBAR site. Regards, Donn Cairns

      The secret is not to use any music or artist thats owned or managed by ANY record company and especially the big guys like Sony, Warner Bros etc.. Sadly that means you can not use any form of well known or popular music as the record label's own and aggressively enforce exclusive rights. Germany has the most restrictive copyright rules on the planet, so no surprise your vids are blocked there. The music I use currently has a Creative Commons Licence = Free to use for non profit or educational purposes and must credit the artist. See Wikipedia for a full explanation + more info on UA-cams T's&C's. Every time you upload a vid to YT, FB or whatever it's automatically run through a voice & sound recognition software during the processing stage where the digital sound signature is matched against a database. It's possible to trick it, but it's not worth the trouble so you are better off working within the rules.
      Much of the music I use is created by non signed, unknown, private or bedroom artists looking to make a name for themselves, i.e. kids, young bands/musicians/composers, non professionals. They are happy for me to use their music as long as I credit them and fall within the Creative Commons Licence as I in affect promote them and their music. With musicians and young bands there is always a risk they will sign their soles to the devil "Sony etc" in which case the CC licence on the soundtrack I/you've been using can change to "exclusive" and I/you will be forced to remove a vid that has so far been OK.
      The genera of music I've been using for the last 2 years is classified as "background music", that which is used in video games or movies which has a low commercial value and for the most part not of interest to the record labels. Most of the music is however managed by an "Ad's Revenue" company which generates a little money for the artist "and a lot for themselves" by placing ads in the online video. That in a nut shell is the secret :)

      RoadTrooper Thanks. I guess I assumed if it was for a non-commercial purpose with limited viewing, a fair use exemption was possible. It isn't like I am going to have any effect on the marketing or sales of these old tunes. What was it that Shakespeare wrote about lawyers?
