@SuperPunch76 Mike Tyson would kill somebody for Ali. There's a reason he's the People's Champ. The Rock didn't get that persona and come up with that nickname outta thin air lol
Watered down or not, the 90's was the deepest/most talented era of nba history overall. First of all, the best players of the 80's were still the best players in the 90's to a large extent (Jordan, Malone, Olajuwon, Barkley, Ewing, Drexler, Wilkins, Stcokton, Tim Hardaway, Daugherty, Magic, Bird, Thomas, Mullin etc...) and second, crazy talents came in the league like Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, Shaquille O'neal, Alonzo Mourning, Jason Kidd, Garnett, Duncan... Second, in the 90's, there's been more 50+ and 60+ wins teams than in any other era and there were 4-5 contenders by conference each season. Not only that but the 8th seed could still beat the 1st seed in that era and it happened. The competition was ferocious. Third, I was there for the expansion but it's way overblown. First of all, a younger Bulls teams (with less veterans) were almost able to win 70+ games (67 exactly) in 1992. So, let's not act like it was out of reach in the first three-peat. Jordan even said in 1994 in an interview that if he does come back, the Bulls are going to win 70+ games. Now, the expansion argument is WAY OVERBLOWN. Here's the truth about it. New teams WERE NOT ALLOWED to choose unrestricted free agents number one. Number two, the new teams were only allowed to chose ONLY ONE PLAYER per team. Third (and this is the most important part), every single team were allowed to "protect" 8 players in their rosters and could only be deplated of only...1 players...so THE CORE OF THE BEST PLAYERS REMAIN INTACT in the league throughout expansion. As teams protect their best players, the expansion teams can often only choose injured, old or overpaid players. That means that expansion teams won’t be good teams (let alone contenders) in their first few years in the league. And guess what? That's exactly what happened. New teams during the expansion in the 90's became good strictly by drafting players years later (so those players were not even in the league and therefore, cannot watered down the league) or remained at the bottom of the league for a long time. Let's look at them: The Orlando Magic drafted Anfernee Hardaway, Shaq, Dennis Scott and Nick Anderson (their big 4), the Charlotte Hornets acquirred Larry Johnson, Kendall Gill and Alonzo Mourning through the draft. The Minnesota Timberwolves acquired Kevin Garnett and Stephon Marbury through the draft, the Raptors acquired Vince Carter through the draft, the heat acquirred Glen Rice and Steve mith through the draft, the Grizzlies were so bad that they don't existe anymore. The Bobcats, who came into the league in the 2000's are still bad. The point is that ALL THOSE NEW TEAMS were among the worst in the league before they were able to draft SUPERSTARS TALENTS because they WERE NOT ALLOWED TO WATERED DOWN THE LEAGUE. So, I know a few players were a bit jealous when the Bulls 72 and talked about it but that's not reality. However, I agree with Bill Simmons that in the first half of the 90's, the league was a little bit deeper and loaded than the second half overall. But let's not exaggerate here...the entire 90's was loaded with talents.
Nba fans say "Micheal Jorden is the greatest sportsmen" The world says "Muhammed Ali was the greatest in the world" For me, Micheal Jorden will never be able to take Muhammad Ali's position. This man stood more than for boxing. He stood for human freedom and even paid for it. Such people are too big to be compared to Jordan. Muhammed Ali can only be seen with Martin Luther King, Ghandi and Nelson Mandela. And yet Muhammed Ali is the greatest person who has set foot in this world
Yeah. Jordan is far richer than Ali because Jordan was about the business and the fame, but Ali...Ali gave it all up when he refused to go to Vietnam because he knew It was wrong. Fans, boxers, NBA players, actors, superstar, athletes, big figures in the world, and other celebrities, consider Ali as the greatest sportsman of all time. The gap between Ali and Jordan is just too great, Ali has more influence by a good gap, and Ali has done more good than Jordan by a mile.
@@sittienakan1594 Firstly, you're talking about 2 different era's, Ali was not the only person who dodge the draft dude. Secondly, Ali was more about the fame than MJ. MJ barely does interviews while Ali was on every news outlet debating, Ali loved the cameras more than anyone
@@kase121 " Ali was not the only person who dodge the draft dude." I know, but we're talking about Ali, how did you reach to other people? I'm talking about who's the greatest athlete, so if you could mention another athlete that did what he did, then go ahead. "Secondly, Ali was more about the fame than MJ. MJ barely does interviews while Ali was on every news outlet debating, Ali loved the cameras more than anyone" What? How does interviewing have to with anything? Of course Ali had more interviews, he was a very controversial figure, but mostly because Ali had big fights so o f course Ali needs to do those interviews. And what do you mean MJ barely does interviews? There are several on UA-cam. There are actually interviews of MJ debating on who the GOAT of basketball is. Ali wasn't debating that much, and if he was, it's usually religion or about politics, and I only remember him debating 2 times, so I would love it if you could show me more interviews of him debating. Plus, most of those times that he was on interview, it was just him trying to promote peace and to have good moral. And before you say there were times he was trash talking his enemies, remember that after his rivalry with Joe, he kept trying to ask forgiveness for him. And the time he got mad at a dude was because he called him Cassius and not Ali.
@@kase121 If MJ did more interviews than Ali, that would really mean nothing. The reason Ali is greater than MJ is because he more influence by a good bit and has done more good. MJ is a good person, but his side was mostly on the business side, Ali decided to do more good than MJ.
@@sittienakan1594 Sir that's how you define 'Good'. MJ is was of the main reasons why NBA players get the money they do today. Moreover, both athletes have made similar impact but it is subjected to their era.
Wow I dont think people actually watched the video. He's not comparing them outside their sport. The comparison is strictly how they performed in their respective sport.
Muhammad Ali's legacy was his civil rights efforts while Michael Jordan's legacy was his Air Jordan Brand. On the court, they were similar in skill to their relative sport.
What he said about the Jazz can be said about the Bulls... They won 72 games during expansion and before the Foreign infusion of Dirk, Parker, Ginobili, Gasol, etc.
I'm sure most just read the thumbnail and didn't hear what he actually said. The Ali comparison was a good one when you think about their dominance as athletes. Bill never compared their outside the court/ring accomplishments. They're also comparable in how famous they both were worldwide at a certain point. Its not a perfect comparison but its not bad
The first threepeat Bulls were better. The second threepeat benefitted from a watered down league with the Canadian teams by 1995. From 1988-1995, there were 6 new teams. And MJ was just better in that 1st threepeat.
Bill Simmoms is on moonshine even metioning Jordan in the same sentence as Muhammad Ali. Ali left his sport in his prime for a cause, Jordan left because. The Jordan fanboys will stop at nothing to prop up their savior
Bill Simmons has this podcast called The Rewatchables. If you compare MJ vs LeBron just by the eye test, MJ is box office. He's just more exciting to watch. More alluring. His story is better. His game is *sexier* and rewatchable.

Straight up Facts from Bill Simmons. I also remember that time how the league was watered down especially in the mid-90s. Then people are comparing who faced tougher competition, MJ in the 90s or Lebron in 10s? Of course its Lebron's 10s. I mean how many all time great teams are in the 90s.. uhm just 1 the Bulls. For the 10s, there is the Warriors, Heat & Cavs (Lebrons teams should be counted as 1) & the Spurs and then a one hit wonder in the Raptors. Also, I would have the 2011 Mavs & 2012 Thunder > > 1997-98 Jazz & 1996 Sonics, 1993 Suns, 1992 Blazers, 1991 Lakers.
Literally all those teams you mentioned played in the Western conference. They had to play each other before facing LeBron in the Finals. Bill Simmons is The Goat
I think Bron is closer to Ali then MJ, because Lebron speak up more like Ali did, but MJ no doubt was a athletic phenomenon along with Lebron and Ali.
True
Facts!!!
Bron is NOTHING like Ali!! Please stop!! Ali did it at a time when America hated him for it! And he paid for it too! Today it is EXPECTED that athletes stand up for social justice causes. Which is exactly why LeBron does it. LeBron does nothing if it doesn't benefit him!
ESPN is really taking this Michael Jordan stuff to far. He was a great basketball player let's leave it at that.
Nick wright punching in the air right now after seeing this
I wouldn’t go that far Lol MJ is the GOAT but comparing him to Ali is disrespectful
SuperPunch76 Ali is still better
Sambe Sha No, he’s not.
Ali is the greatest but he’s arguably not the best boxer to ever live, Jordan is the best and greatest basketball player to ever live.
@SuperPunch76 Mike Tyson would kill somebody for Ali. There's a reason he's the People's Champ. The Rock didn't get that persona and come up with that nickname outta thin air lol
i think he meant how big they were culturally
Roy Ali is not the greatest, that is Floyd Mayweather
But let's not exaggerate here...the entire 90's was loaded with talents.
waiting for the me7o doc 🤝make it a 20 parter
Sacralegous!!!
Surprised to see Bill on ESPN's main show
Except Ali stood up for injustices
Nba fans say "Micheal Jorden is the greatest sportsmen"
The world says "Muhammed Ali was the greatest in the world"
For me, Micheal Jorden will never be able to take Muhammad Ali's position.
@@kase121 " Ali was not the only person who dodge the draft dude."
I know, but we're talking about Ali, how did you reach to other people? I'm talking about who's the greatest athlete, so if you could mention another athlete that did what he did, then go ahead.
"Secondly, Ali was more about the fame than MJ. MJ barely does interviews while Ali was on every news outlet debating, Ali loved the cameras more than anyone"
What?
They could've just played the excerpt from 2k. 😂😂😂😂
Bill is the guy to talk to in relation to baskeball.
Why does that print behind Bill look like MJ is dubbing Larry 🤦🏿♂️😂
My favourite basketball analysts: Bill Simmons, Jalen Rose and Chauncey Billups.

Jordan takes a back seat to NO ONE in the patheon of great athletes asswipe!!
Bill Simmons has this podcast called The Rewatchables. If you compare MJ vs LeBron just by the eye test, MJ is box office. He's just more exciting to watch. More alluring. His story is better. His game is *sexier* and rewatchable.
Some fans Hate Jordan because he went "6-0" in Finals and no matter what they EVER say they can never CHANGE this fact...This must be so Frustrating to his Haters =(....They argue and debate and as SOON as they are done Jordan is STILL absolutely PERFECT on the BIG stage...They just cant deal with this...Shannon Sharpe and Nick Wright have NIGHTMARES about this
Look at Bill squashing some old beef and getting back on ESPN. Now only if Krause, Phil, MJ, and Pippen could have done the same...
You cannot compare Michael Jordan to Muhammad Ali the Original Greatest of All TIMES
Muhammad Ail was a activist as well. Michael Jordan was not.
I think Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan could be compared for the greatness in their sport. But Muhammad Ali was that much greater, cause Ali spoke up for all the injustices African ppl had to deal with. MJ. Never really spoke out the injustices African ppl face, he could've but he didn't.
Bill simmons is the greatest basketball junkie and mind I have ever heard seen or watched in my entire existence. I wouldn't be upset if he was the owner of the NBA instead of adam not that adam is a bad owner mind you.
Really? Comparing Jordan to Ali? Sacrilegious!
Why is ESPN video quality so low?
Ali is the true Goat.
I love that the people who are commenting on how Jordan and Ali are nothing alike, didn't actually listen to what Bill Simmons said.

Facts!
Blasphemous!!!!
The Bulls defeated the most 60 win teams than any team in NBA history, so of course there were other all time great teams in the 90's.
Literally all those teams you mentioned played in the Western conference. They had to play each other before facing LeBron in the Finals. LeBron spent almost a decade with little to no Eastern conference competition. Then his fans cry about how tough his competition is in the Finals. LMFAO!!! It must be great to be LeBron. He has the dumbest fans in the world!!
