There are two sides to every story. Many people from former Ottoman territories today still resent the Ottomans. However it's the same with any empire, the Ottomans were no worse than anyone else (in fact they were probably a lot better). I don't see why people can't have a balanced view, instead it's either over-glorified, white-washing about how wonderful the Ottomans were, or over-the-top hatred and ranting and raving about how bad they were. How about we just accept them for what they were? Nearly every nation throughout history, if it had the military and diplomatic ability, expanded and created empires. It wasn't because they were evil, it was simply because they could. The Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Mongolians, Arabs, Ottomans, British..... they did what is human nature, with the advantage they had at the time. Let go of the guilt, admire and respect, but also learn for the future not to make the same mistakes.
+tosgem This is all well and good, but the fact remains that some countries under Ottoman rule suffered a lot because of cultural and religious differences. Had they been conquered or under the rule of some other christian nation - I can only speak for Hungary in this case - the strain inflicted might have been less. For about 150 years, the country was a buffer zone for Austria and the Ottoman. During this period - as far as I'm aware - the population under Ottoman rule had declined drastically because those who ruled them wanted to get as much wealth from them as possible, since the land belonged to the sultan and they only used it for a limited time. I have no hate for the turkish people of today, but that doesn't mean I have to like what happened in the past.
Of course it wasn't all gloom or doom. But at least for the christians under the ottoman rule it was mostly not a very pleasent thing. Paying higher taxes, not being allowed basic rights. Then there was the blood tax (taking of christian children) and also regular kidnapping of christian brides. So much, that in some regions there were only weddings when there were at least half a dozen couples, in order to be able to fend off any such attempt. It is no coincidence that those parts who stayed the longest time under ottoman rule are less developped even till today (at least in Europe).
hey we east asia never forget what christian did to us give high tax if cant pay the answer is he will get kill. ok like yoi said muslim giv tax to christian yea you right not only christian muslim also must pay zakat to goverment so plzs read true history so you can know the truth
Beat that Strawman hard, Esteban Perz. No one said christian and no one said muslim. This was, obviously, a decision of the Turkish state not Islam. Islam only allowed room for such a morally bankrupt action. Obviously your mind cannot handle the assertion that 'non-whites' can be racist and morally bankrupt assholes.
Ottomans sick man period is like Todays USA. If people remembered fondly of the Ott Empire, there wouldn't be middle east like todays mess. And it was against the will of colonialists. There was even jewish disguising in muslim clothes and rebelling against state asking for Sheria law rule in modern Turkey. That level of oxymoron and manipulation within society, and with no modern media, pulling off games is somehow easier, because people are not informed on subjects during action. Many false propaganda has been carried out. And the peace within society was heavily injured. And all this was caused due to the necessity to centeralize the power in Istanbul. And that was a perfect fit for Europe's dreams. Because whole world was changing towards more and more centeralized states. And that was completely against the nature of the Ott Empire. You can see a similar faith happening to USA today. They get more and more centeralized, populist and one way of being American. And actually thats against the diverse and local culture of USA, more or less every other city is originally different. But now, that trend is changing. Especially, gentrification makes us loose the real history of cities. Everywhere becomes similar, a trendy cafe in china, a trendy cafe in Stockholm, if you just look at the image you cant guess where you are anymore. Americans will also i guess due to that, become a society where fractions fight with each other openly and thus tolerance decaying. Today USA has way heavier international Intelligence activity within its borders, compared to its history. This also was the case in Ottoman Empire, through the end, a huge influx of foreign intelligence services. Because country can not project enough power. Finally there is one more similarity which i think is the main reason for all of the above. Just like North Atlantic trade deal, Pacific trade deal on the way, Ottomans were crumbling under heavy economical give aways, to more competant countries. China and India by itself is like this today against America. And Americans loose more and more their freedom to put the price tag on for their own products. One similar empire that has certain similarity is Ancient China, but throughout History they have evolved to a Nation where a big margin feels connected and similar, unlike history, where every village has its own way of being a buddhist. But they changed that especially with Culture Revolution, some argue that it proves to be useful. But i think that it caused China to become from a poetically beautiful Empire with fine art and culture, to a concrete farm with no oxygen to smell and no taste not pleasurable architecture at all nearly.
greeks turks kurds arabs kroats serbs russian laz zaza hungarians etc etc were al in the ottoman army or goverment, infact serbian greek women maried the sultans, if thats not multiculturalism' wath is?
no pal that is imperialism these nationalities didn't join the Ottoman Empire by choice and sex slavery is not considered as an indicator for multiculturalism actually modern day ISIL would be considered more multicultural than the Ottoman at least its cross national fighters joined by choice
All true, but you missed the point. The reason for the Ottoman (and Austrian-Hungarian) empire decline was the change in the creation of wealth. The Ottoman were a trading/agricultural empire the new European empires were industrial based. The Ottoman empire was well placed to take advantage of trade and agriculture but was less well endowed with resources of the new industrial revolution. Other factors may have contributed and/or exacerbated but the change from trading/agriculture to industrial was the fundamental cause.
And no, not all is true. Get some facts from history that actually took place. Learn the life of Muhammad and you will learn the mind of a Muslim. There is no radical Islam and moderate Islam. There is only 1 Islam. There is no perforation between Muhammad slaughtering all that were non Muslim so Islam could create the Ottoman Empire and Pakistan finally becoming a state 70 years ago after a 1,000 year campaign of genocide against India. It's seamless from one to the other and done by the same faith. Now they create a lie called Palestine and look to gain more land from Israel. There is and never was a Palestine nor a Palestinian from a land called Palestine. Science has already proved that to be a fact.
Only if your history teacher is a Christian KKK grand wizard you will get this view Your statements are an affront to history and science on the whole and shows a mindset that is completely isolated from real life. It also shows complete uneducated or religious isolation and an oblivious view of subjective facts. If you read the Old testament you will see the mind of Christians and Jews? so wrath and genocide is allowed? stoning people to death and the keeping of slaves as well? you are saying all Christians and Jews are like this? BECAUSE THE CHRISTIAN AND JEWISH SCRIPTURES ARE ISLAM'S scriptures. Jesus and Moses are part of Islam, they'r teachings are Islams teachings. There is only education, and the lacking of. That is what you have in common with the extremist Islamist, fool.

That was one of the most unique takes I have yet seen for the decline of the Ottoman Empire. I have such respect for this channel and the work you produce, and may it continue. 👏👏👏
I've listened to three of your videos, CaspianReport. I don't always know enough to agree, or always agree, but I enjoy listening. Keep up the good work.
I think he should mention a "fun" fact about how the Janissaries were recruited. Basically every 5 year officials would take the strongest kids from Christian families and forcefully convert them to Islam and indoctrine them to become a highly disciplined military force.
Two things stood out in this video 1.The minting of money out of this air 2.How the Ottomans went from being great producers to consumers... sounds like America...doesn't it?
Except we're not an empire that relies on outward conquest to maintain ourselves. We can turn it around.. But we'd rather spend our money most on out military rather than fix our internal problems.
+Aleksia Malmgren yes but if we don't contribute money to our military, we would not be able to keep up with new military technology, and God forbid a war breaks out and we do not have the latest military technology...we would be doomed. it's not like we spend money on the military for no reason.
+Aleksia min skatt except america is actually an empire that actually conquest to force other countries to accept their market rules and invade countries like iraq for resources
+Aleksia min skatt USA is an empire, How ? you may ask.. sweetie, the ultimate goal of any empire used to invade, conquer and then pillage the resources of the invaded land. this is old school, thing of the past when you could not have US dollar as the only currency for international trade enforced by various means, only currency to trade oil because US declares a war on them. Saddam is an example. World bank and IMF to subjugate entire countries through their corrupt leaders. When you get a chance, read the book titled "Confessions of the economic hitman" by John Perkins and you will understand the game. you will understand how it is being done in this new world. Once upon a time, America was the greatest country in the world and it is continuously going down in pretty much every field. There are several reasons for it, one is Americans being in denial of this reality. I am an American myself and I do not take any pleasure in saying all of this rather I am bleeding from inside.
Hm, this video was flagged by the YT community as offensive to some viewers. I wonder which viewers that would be, and I also wonder what their reasons are for being offended. I'm not inclined to take them seriously, but I am curious nonetheless.
One of the biggest reasons for their decline was the sultans and Islam's growing opposition to science and innovation. The printing press was banned on penalty of death for over 400 years in favour of traditional calligraphy. As a result, literacy rates in the Ottoman Empire remained shockingly low compared to Europe. A sharp contrast with the Islamic golden era where science, mathematics and technology was championed.
Most of Europe were peasants too. The only difference was that the printing press allowed the mass production of books, in particular the Bible. With books now more available to the general public there was a gradual increase in literacy.
Yes. And now in the US we public are captive to 'fake' news and even 'fake' legislation where bills are passed in the last days of an administration merely to have them mitigated by the new administration. Actual legislation is passed on the sly and under cover of a nonsense media storm. The military seems to govern itself with goals of world domination with western expansion exactly the author describes as seen in the failure to take Vienna. Note the failure of public education here in the US. Note that the numbers of hires from India and China. Note that the wars in the MIddle East and the coming wars in Africa are underwritten by keeping strong men in power by Visa bribes for entire sects and power groups. The US does not have a single tech improvement to offer. We are spinning drone warfare and selling cars. Cel phones are radios. Fusion will never happen. The rest of the world is actually practicing solar while we lag. Clean water will define the future survivors lives.
Graeme SYDNEY I said it's SIMILAR - not exactly the same. If you listen to the video you'll see how many of the things that the Ottoman empire did were the same as what the US is doing now.
@caspianreport I have been watching your videos and I love them! You give a very balanced, unbiased view on a lot of histories based on the facts. I wish all historians were like that :) Thank you!
He actually is biased. He didn't mention that most of the Christian soldiers in the Ottoman Empire were actually kidnapped since they were children. They didn't stay Christian as they were raised Muslim, many Christians revolt because of this but were brutally suppressed every time. The Ottomans also helped other Muslim empires raid Europe and Africa for more slaves to use in their harems and their armies.
Was my comment directed to you? No. My comment was directed to this video provided by Caspian Report. If you want to direct your message to this video, I suggest you add a comment right below the video description instead of replying to me. Thank you!
Yasemin Akay I'm sure he already knows this but refuses to state it. You can't just gloss over the slave trades when learning about the Ottoman Empire since it's a big part of it. I felt the need to reply to you because you claim that the uploader is "unbiased" However, that is the consequence of commenting on a public channel. If you are truly interested in history then you would heed to this too.
Yasemin Akay And refer to mine. First you insinuate he is unbiased, while accusing other historians of being biased. I am directing my message to you because of the statements you made.
The religious minorities within the Ottoman Empire were protected by law, and religious non-Muslim minorities had to pay religious tax called Cizye in order not to serve in the Ottoman army. The only way for a non-Muslim to avoid the Cezye tax was by converting to Islam.
don't forget many people willingly converted because that is what their soul felt was the truth. hmm i see the bosnian flag. are you aware of much help bosnia receives from turkey?
Are you aware that most of Turkey's help is received from US and Israel? Sending Bosnia-Herzegovina some humanitarian aid by the Gulen Foundations is consider help! Nobody help anybody for free. Turkey getting lots of benefits in returns.
If Israel does help Turkey, it's probably because we saved so many Jews in WW2. America and other countries didn't accept many Jews, some of them were returned. US probably wants the rest of Middle East to be like Turkey. This is the first time I come across a person like you, a Bosnian that's ungrateful and hates Turkey.
Why should I like a country that acts as a super power, while it is a puppet! Why would I respect a country that uses the name of Islam for its own benefits? Why should I have respect for a nation that blames all of its mistakes on others (Arabs, Kurds, Bosnians, Albanians, Armenians...), and plays the victim role at all times! Why would I sympathy with a nation that its leaders, who are all theives, are the rules! Why would I have respect for a nation that always claims the work of others as its own, while it is not! What did Turkey do for Bosnia-Herzegovina since 14th century and until today!
So informative! Great coverage. Would you consider doing a Part II: *Fall* of the Ottoman Empire? This is definitely "new information" for a lot of viewers.

I agree that economic reasons of the fall were the main ones but there were other factors. Ottoman Empire was constantly at war. There were numerous wars with Austria, Poland and Russia that continually drained manpower and wealth of the empire in 17th and 18th century. Those war are not known (because they were stalemate or minor gains for European powers) but if you read how many people participated and died in them you would be astonished.
JaLiberal actually this is untrue. there was something called the rose-era. there was no war for half a decade. but ultimately its like any other empire, ever expanding.
well said really, about the economy part of this video, exact same thing is happening... and 50% of the people are sleeping... The worst part is that you cannot wake them up. They turned into zombies..
This comment section is split in 4 sides *The Christian countries under Ottoman Empire who hate on the Empire *Turks who shit on the people from number 1 *The people who hate the Ottoman Empire making shit up(rare, but existing) *The smart people(from all people Turks,Greeks,Armenians ect.)who doesn't get into this fight Why cant we just live and comment on videos in peace? The stuff that group 1 uses to insult may have happened but it has been nearly 95 years since the Empire fell apart and there is no reason to start fights for fucks sake just live in peace
The turks built their empire off the sassanid and byzantine. Once they weren't able to conquer and expand they had nothing to fall back on no industry or agricultural strengths to hold up the economy. They were the best steppe warriors but tech caught up with them and they never innovated. The best thing the Ottomans did was force Europe into the age of exploration.
@@Regard1ess The idea is that the Ottomans banned the Europeans from trading with Persia, India and Arabia, and in doing so, forced the Europeans to attempt to find other routes to these trading partners. This got the Portugese to work on long distance naval travel, eventually setting up a trading empire in Africa and the Indian Ocean, and then the Americas were discovered by the Spanish. But I don't know that much about this stuff, so it may not be correct.
Something that has to be said: the Ottomans were not idiots. They took gunpowder, made it a weapon and used Christians as the primary soldiers given their penchant for loyalty. They took advantage of their geographic position to profit off the trade between Europe and Asia. During WWI they hired help from Germany to get their military on par with the rest of the world. The problem is that the culture couldn't translate to the modern era.
As a Turk I approve. In Turkey, you have to learn English and read stuff that isn't written by a mainstream Turkish person to understand the importance of the issue and see the problems of the culture. Sadly the ones that can / are lucky to do this are really minority. It's sad that such closeminded ideologies still exist today
Levon Gevorgyan and there you're wrong, the main body of the Janisaries were Christian because of their loyalty which was not a strong quality among the warring turks
30 years ago I took a course in economic history, I remember the professor explaining that once the industrial revolution occurred in Britain, the technology was smuggled all over Europe (it was illegal to export plans of looms), except for the Ottoman Empire, because the commercial laws in the Empire made it impossible to set up profitable businesses.
You are absolutely right. USA's jobs are shipped overseas, reduced production and increased consuming. USA is turning into aristocracy(for example Bush-Clinton dynasty). Large corporations basically buying democracy. Corporate lobbying=corruption.
+rula karbes lol I love seeing you people getting mad about this kinda stuff, this is how I see it.... I don't really care just as long as it doesn't affect me
+SuperNoobProdigy This video was about the decline of a superpower, its narrative draws erie parallels with the US, and that doesn't scare you? I have a buddy with the same rationale as you and you both need to pull your heads from between your legs. "Decline" in reference to the US will lead to a devastating domestic array of problems including vast increases in the prices of goods, seizure of industry growth, less domestic and foreign security, etc. if you don't worry about it before it effects you, you're inviting hardship on yourself and others. So don't scoff at the adults who understand not only the importance of history but the need to engage in pertinent debates aiming to avoid becoming the next failed empire.
seriously...... when Suleiman the Magnificent killed his sons including his elder son Mustafa and the man whom he trusted Ibrahim. .....Ottoman empire started to go down.😟
Alpha Zey Very true. If the gradual decline of the Ottoman Empire could be traced back to one single event it would definitely be Suleiman the Magnificent's execution of his most intelligent and capable son Mustafa. This single act (which Suleiman later greatly regretted) is what caused his least capable son Selim to suceed him as Selim II who was a drunkard and a fool by most accounts. Selim II was the first of several weak, foolish and ineffective sultans (his son Murad III, Ibrahim, Mustafa I) that lead to a domino effect of social, economic and military decline in the Ottoman Empire. Luckily in between the period of gradual decline there were a few stronger, intelligent, and more capable sultans that temporarily halted the decline such as Murad IV, Ahmed I, and Suleiman II but unfortunately it wasn't enough.
@@kaizer0491 one of the causes of the decline of the Ottoman Empire was the harem where the Caliph spent too many hours with those lovely women and thus neglecting his duties and responsibilities.

Hello and congrats for your channel. If possible, can you do a video about the byzantine empire and the diplomacy? there is a very interesting book on that subject ( The grand strategy of the Byzantine Empire / Edward N. Luttwak )
I find it very interesting that it is almost impossible especially back then to see the sign of your own decline until it brought to the forefront by some huge disasters. I find that most important battles in history are usually only important because of what happens after the battle, meaning that no strong state can be defeated in a single battle. I think the best example of this Manziert, the battle was a crushing defeat but it was only by exploiting the disunity of the empire following it that the Turks were able to bring the Byzantines to the edge of destruction.
Ali Bera Pinarbasi honest it is hard to tell if the United States is in decline or more if the rest of the world is catching up. Although that isn't too different.
I found that interesting, and reading some of the comments it's also thought provoking. It's good to see other peoples point of view, and though I might not agree with some of them, it's good to have the debate. Nice one.

Now about the forced conversion thing: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forced_conversion#Islam
+Paris Ninpo During the end of the Ottoman empire, the elite have become desperate to maintain their power and status..which lead to putting crazy people in power..as you can see, most of the massacre is in 18 and 19 century.. But i think that it caused China to become from a poetically beautiful Empire with fine art and culture, to a concrete farm with no oxygen to smell and no taste not pleasurable architecture at all nearly.

no pal that is imperialism these nationalities didn't join the Ottoman Empire by choice and sex slavery is not considered as an indicator for multiculturalism actually modern day ISIL would be considered more multicultural than the Ottoman at least its cross national fighters joined by choice
Graeme SYDNEY it's Austro Hungarian empire not Austrian hungarian
Only if your history teacher is a Christian KKK grand wizard you will get this view
Your statements are an affront to history and science on the whole and shows a mindset that is completely isolated from real life.
Subjective = "based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions."
Fact = "A fact is something that has really occurred or is actually true. The usual test for a statement of fact is verifiability-that is, whether it can be demonstrated to ... "
Talk about lack of education and logic - there is no such thing as a "subjective fact".
The rest of your dibble is illogical dibble and a baseless, uniformed, emotionally 'satisfying for you' rant.
Are you able to prove that +tripserpentine was just dismissing facts. Either you haven't read the bible and koran, or you just like to dismiss whatever doesn't come to your liking.

I think he should mention a "fun" fact about how the Janissaries were recruited.
Basically every 5 year officials would take the strongest kids from Christian families and forcefully convert them to Islam and indoctrine them to become a highly disciplined military force.
thats good
Brilliant analysis, I'm impressed that you were so thorough in such a brief video. Excellent
Wow. I really enjoyed the content today. Thank for researching and putting this all together
Two things stood out in this video
1.The minting of money out of this air
2.How the Ottomans went from being great producers to consumers...
sounds like America...doesn't it?

Very informative video! Thanks for that!
+C Mac Totally agree
Dont talk shit there, the literacy rate was low because my peole in the ottoman empire, especially the population was peasants.
C Mac What "The printing press was banned on penalty of death" that's new any proof?

Most detailed explanation of Ottoman decline that I’ve watched yet. Keep up the good work
@caspianreport I have been watching your videos and I love them!
Refer to my previous comment.
Since the Christian minorities were protected by law, why the 2.5 million Christians in Anatolia alone were slaughtered by Ottomans?
don't forget many people willingly converted because that is what their soul felt was the truth. hmm i see the bosnian flag. are you aware of much help bosnia receives from turkey?
Very informative. Thank you for posting this.

Excellent video, thank you very much.
This video was great. Thank you.
JaLiberal actually this is untrue. there was something called the rose-era. there was no war for half a decade. but ultimately its like any other empire, ever expanding.
cecil123 lol. yeah the brits were nothing like that...sarcasm.
JaLiberal Poland? They only had a few fights with ottomans. In every event some random dude slams Polandstan there like it matters...

Great job on making this.
The turks built their empire off the sassanid and byzantine. Once they weren't able to conquer and expand they had nothing to fall back on no industry or agricultural strengths to hold up the economy. They were the best steppe warriors but tech caught up with them and they never innovated. The best thing the Ottomans did was force Europe into the age of exploration.
best comment !
onur şenol they were doing fine with agriculture but they couldnt keep up with the industrial revolution
Well said. Ottoman Empire couldn't keep up with tech innovation and exploration of the West.
Sounds like a child. You were need to say dat Islam and monarchy was stopping their science and innovations.
But I don't know that much about this stuff, so it may not be correct.

corruption is the poison
islam is a corrupted religion
***** nope, an orthodox christian says that
outatis ater how come?
It might be the poison, but it is also inevitable. As we are a flawed creature by evolution.
Im glad we can agree on something Babar Shah
Something that has to be said: the Ottomans were not idiots. They took gunpowder, made it a weapon and used Christians as the primary soldiers given their penchant for loyalty. They took advantage of their geographic position to profit off the trade between Europe and Asia. During WWI they hired help from Germany to get their military on par with the rest of the world. The problem is that the culture couldn't translate to the modern era.
No. Christians were forbidden from serving. The Christians you speak of were born Christian, but converted later on.
Those christians were slaves forced to convert to evil islam
Levon Gevorgyan forced to convert
Levon Gevorgyan and there you're wrong, the main body of the Janisaries were Christian because of their loyalty which was not a strong quality among the warring turks
An interesting short vid. Thank you.
very well done. Thank you.
Sound like America now
You are absolutely right. USA's jobs are shipped overseas, reduced production and increased consuming. USA is turning into aristocracy(for example Bush-Clinton dynasty). Large corporations basically buying democracy. Corporate lobbying=corruption.

+Ian Williams so many conspiracy theorist out there. Like flat earthiers, Flat earthiers disgust me.

seriously...... when Suleiman the Magnificent killed his sons including his elder son Mustafa and the man whom he trusted Ibrahim. .....Ottoman empire started to go down.😟
Alpha Zey Never trust women, this was all caused by his wife
Patrick C. ..agree
@@kaizer0491 one of the causes of the decline of the Ottoman Empire was the harem where the Caliph spent too many hours with those lovely women and thus neglecting his duties and responsibilities.

I find it very interesting that it is almost impossible especially back then to see the sign of your own decline until it brought to the forefront by some huge disasters. I find that most important battles in history are usually only important because of what happens after the battle, meaning that no strong state can be defeated in a single battle. I think the best example of this Manziert, the battle was a crushing defeat but it was only by exploiting the disunity of the empire following it that the Turks were able to bring the Byzantines to the edge of destruction.
thinking the same here. Same thing going on with US now

Only after Ataturk, Turkey (the successor of the Ottoman empire) became a secular state. Before that you had the occasional oppression and mass murder here and there like every empire with a main religion.
Now about the forced conversion thing:

+Paris Ninpo During the end of the Ottoman empire, the elite have become desperate to maintain their power and status..which lead to putting crazy people in power..as you can see, most of the massacre is in 18 and 19 century..
