    I really like this porcelain palette. Like you, I have gravitated away from plastic to porcelain, it just works better for watercolor. Like your color choices too. Nice video! 🎨🖌

    It's a shame this doesn't have a cover..,,otherwise it's the perfect size and I ordered one.

      Isn't it too bad? Then it would be perfect. I didn't mention the backside can be flipped over and has other mixing areas, but I don't see myself ever using it like that! I hope you enjoy using it!

    This was great! I've thought about a porcelain palette for a while, grateful for the information. Ty Susan

    I agree porcelain is best, but I have some folding plastic palettes that I'm just fine with too. To prevent my plastic ones from beading up so much in the mixing areas, I took some small grain sandpaper to LIGHTLY scratch some texture on the surface and it seems to help. I will also try your olive oil method of cleaning them. I also wanted to suggest that if anyone wants a cheap porcelain palette, you can frequently find white porcelain deviled egg trays or other divided white porcelain dishes at thrift stores that may work great for your palettes.

      The best way to prepare a plastic folding palette and remove the/any stains from its plastic is to rub it with toothpaste. Sandpaper is way to abrasive and it will make in time the plastic mixing space to stain more.
      Now the plastic folding palettes are IMHO the best palettes for outdoor painting and sketching because they are ultra flat and can slip at any kind of bag or backpack while they offer plenty of mixing space. It is the thickness of the art materials that makes them bulky and not their size. If you hold with you a thick box, and a thick sketchbook and a thick pencil case then the whole setup is difficult to fit in your bag as you don't hold only your art materials in a bag.

    a year ago when I started investing in watercolor and bought my first plastic palette, I watched your set up video and it was super helpful in getting me started. It's nice to see another update. I haven't really migrated to ceramic/porcelain mostly because of space and portability. I also get a lot of pet hair in my paint LOL. Hence having a cover does help (very little!!). Maybe some day when I get "better" in my watercolor journey, I'll graduate to something that feels more "adult". Thanks for sharing your new colors too

      It's so nice to hear that my set-up helped you back when you started your palette. It took me now 5 years to finally migrate to ceramic/porcelain but I can also see myself going back to folding plastic palettes if I needed more room (or perhaps have one to use when I'm not filming). Some of the amazing master-level artists that I admire use plastic palettes and plastic folding palettes. Ultimately it's whatever works for each of us personally.

    Just ordered the smaller Meedeen palette. I have a few plastic and the Mejello and they’re fine I also have a larger ceramic but it takes up so much space on my desk. In actuality I like a larger porcelain surgical tray for mixing and I’m in that like 80% and my palette 20% so makes sense to have a smaller porcelain with 18 wells but 5x7 rather than 9x11 in addition to the large mixing tray. It makes better sense to me anyway. I like your lucid style of explanation from your perspective too. Refreshing. Not over explaining. Thanks for a lovely video

    I always put my colors in mixing order. So there is a logical path from the yellow and blue that will make the brightest green It looks funky but I don't have to think much if I want a bright or muted mix, I know what I want to use.

    • @SusanChiang
      @SusanChiang  Рік тому

      That’s a very logical and reasonable way to order them, thanks for sharing! If I may ask, do you pair up your colors, for example if you have multiple yellows and blues in your palette?

    Thanks for this info! I too got irritated with the staining of plastic palettes. I've switched. My active palettes are porcelain and/or my ceramic coated butcher's tray.

      I have a ceramic coated butchers tray too! But it’s become more of a “catch all of my loose supplies” tray 😬

    Do you find you can paint larger paintings with this size pallette? Do the wells comfortably fit a size 12 brush, for example?

    • @SusanChiang
      @SusanChiang  Рік тому

      I've used size 12 brushes with this palette, but the largest painting I've done with this palette is probably an 8x10. I've seen some really masterful painters use travel-size palettes to paint larger pieces like 11 x17+, so I think it's possible! And one day I hope to be able to do so too ;)

    I like this palette but what do you cover it with when you put it away?

    • @SusanChiang
      @SusanChiang  Рік тому

      That's a good question...I wish I had a good answer! But I don't really ever put it away, it tends to stay out on my desk, so I don't cover it. I know some palettes come with covers.

    This looks like a very nice and compact porcelain palette. Most of the palettes for studio use are very large for the small desks that most people use. I've read on Amazon reviews that the underside of this palette is glazed too and it has dividers in order to use it as an extra mixing space. Is that true or the Amazon reviews were talking about a different Medeen palette?

    • @SusanChiang
      @SusanChiang  Рік тому

      I really like it’s compact size. And it doesn’t feel overwhelming/that I’m looking at so many paint colors. As for the back side, it looks just like the Amazon photos. It’s glazed and is divided! I’ve never used that side yet though. But it does have it.

    • @creativecolours2022
      @creativecolours2022 Рік тому

      @@SusanChiang That makes it even better because it gives you the option to mix heavier washes as well for backgrounds etc.
      But the thing I like the most is that it has a very compact size and that it is designed in such a way that you can place it on the side of your painting.
      Very well designed palette.

    May I know what ink you used to draw the color chart? It didn’t smudge with water.

      Sure! I used a fountain pen filled with Carbon Black Ink (amzn.to/3SwjXxN). You can buy Platinum fountain pen with cartridges too - in case you don’t have a fillable fountain pen. It’s a great waterproof ink!
