Good vid. I wasn't expecting the realness of info. I don't do pick up/ deliveries, but the info still implies to my situation (landscaping/junk removal)
Out of all those videos that I have seen on the Internet by far this is the most spot on video for the shortest time out there. I am in my early to mid 50s and I'm starting to get into the game right now. I have just gotten my permits on my own and one way or another I will get my CDL in the right way. Your words are definitely touch me personally as a motivational words to help me continue in my journey and the turn all the setbacks that's facing me along the way. Please keep doing what you doing helping others I could feel it in your emotional attitude as you are talking to the camera it meant something to me something positive of course. The world is getting a smaller and smaller i will like to keep in touch with you maybe someday I will be in your area then I would like to invite you for a dinner from brother to another brother. Thank you so much. I am truly grateful to you
Glad I’m able to be of some assistance & you’re finding value in my content. These are the comments that keep me going, I definitely appreciate your feedback & support!!!
Man, more power to you dealing with hired drivers, very difficult for me to keep my cool. Glad solo only is "enough" for me, but it isn't about growth clearly, just semi retirement.
Great information! Currently in the process of starting my own and dealing with insurance at the moment.. running out of Cali Cheapest quote so for is 2,300 a month
A lot of the insurance options I spoke of may not be available to you until after your first year in business. $2,300 in my opinion is on the higher side but is a somewhat normal rate for a new carrier these days, I’ve heard of a lot higher.
Thank you for sharing. I just received my DOT,MC,UCR and BOC3. I currently planning to rent starting out. The information regarding the insurance was extremely helpful. I got a mock quote for Cargo, 16 and 26ft vehicles with Progressive…Extremely high for 26ft but more affordable with Cargo and 16ft. How might I be affected if I cannot afford my insurance by 21 days ( possible audit). My business plan will have to be alter based on over head I feel 1. ELD 2. IFTR 3. Insurance
I’m looking for a box truck now. New authority soon. I hear is roughy for us new authority. But like u say in your videos push. And I will follow all this 5 rules you shared. I’m from Hillside IL too. 🙏
@@JosephLorenzo-ed9cy Yes it won’t be easy but it’s worth it, if you’re in Hillside IL get in contact with Veterans Distribution of Chicago/Chicago Messenger Service. They have local routes for sprinters, 16 footers & 26 foot box trucks. Best of luck on your journey, blessings!
That’s true, especially with Amazon off the table for the first 180 days. When I started it was easier for new carriers to hit the ground running, it’s definitely more challenging now.
dude this advice is awesome!! whats a minimum size box truck to start at for owner operator ? i was looking at a 16 ft or 18 ft? what are ur thoughts??
A solid 16 footer will get you in the door if you know how to network & find work. It’s plenty out here u just have to apply yourself honestly. Appreciate the support!!!
Yes you first need to know the average mpg of your truck, then the average cost per gallon of fuel in your area. You divide the average cost for fuel by your trucks average mpg & that’ll give you your cost of fuel per mile. Example if the average cost for fuel is $4 & your truck gets 10 mpg then divide 4 by 10 which would give you 40 cpm for fuel.
I think you may need more than 3k to sustain the ups & downs starting out. I would try to with as close to 10k as possible. I’m not trying to discourage you but you need some room for error.
I believe it’ll take 60 days to cancel your policy with progressive from either you end or theirs. So yes you’ll have to pay atleast 2 more months plus the down payment on the new policy.
Great video, I appreciate your insights. I myself want to start with a 16 foot box truck and work my ass off until I am able to afford a 26 footer. How much harder is it starting off with a 16 footer? Would you suggest against it?
I wouldn’t suggest against it but I would advise you to consider starting in a cargo van instead, there isn’t a huge difference in the earning potential honestly. A lot of 16 footers aren’t even dock height, if you do go that route I would make sure it is dock height or has a lift gate.
@@midwestboxtrucking but cargo vans are not dock height and that does not seem to be a problem. Or are 16 footers treated a certain way by brokers, dispatchers and contractors?
The price of insurance is greatly based on the value of your truck, newer trucks are normally of greater value. I don’t think it being paid for or financed matters so much.
With ur box truck company what if you decided to do something else like sell hats or junk removal do you still use same name as well with whatever you decided to start or do the name even matter
It depends on what your name is, in most cases I’d say leave it as is. But if it’s unfitting for your new start up business then either create a new entity or just change the name.
Hello my Friend, I know that I need insurance so that my authority can get older. I want to put insurance on a cargo van, but I would like to change it when it turns 6 months to put a box truck in the insurance and take out the cargo van so I can get good loads for the box truck Can I do that with the authority of the cargo van or I have to get a new authority for the box truck ?
No that’s actually a good idea, you’ll just add the box truck to your FMCSA profile when you’re ready. Of course your insurance policy will increase then but you’ll save some money initially.

a big one for those not going ONLY amazon - DONT GET FACTORTING, let it play out for the 90 days and you save some money

Can you tell me how to do the cost per mile for the gas part?
Yes you first need to know the average mpg of your truck, then the average cost per gallon of fuel in your area. Example if the average cost for fuel is $4 & your truck gets 10 mpg then divide 4 by 10 which would give you 40 cpm for fuel.
Renting a cargo van or a 26, Is the only way I can get into this.. I think. So 3K would you say a good number 2 start in?
I think you may need more than 3k to sustain the ups & downs starting out. I would try to with as close to 10k as possible. I’m not trying to discourage you but you need some room for error.
Ok question is can I switch insurance on my truck at anytime? If so will I still have to pay progressive? Thanks for the video

What should I start with a box truck or cargo van?
I would go with a cargo van & work my way up if necessary, it’s cheaper overhead & a higher success rate than the box truck lane.
Does the price of insurance change if your truck is paid off compared to if being financed?
The price of insurance is greatly based on the value of your truck, newer trucks are normally of greater value. I don’t think it being paid for or financed matters so much.
