I make them with a top and bottom with a piece of cotton batting as well. A total of 6 squares 6" by 6" and the batting. Makes for a thicker and more protection for your serfaces.
I would think the batting gets added after the top is weaved but just before you add the bottom. NOTE: make sure to double check BEFORE you sew the bottom on that the batting will be sandwiched in between the top and bottom. So many times I have been in a hurry and not double checked, only to find out the batting lays on the outside instead of in the middle (oof -- head smack!)
