- Pankaj Udhas (born 1951) is an Indian ghazal and playback singer. He started his career with a release of a ghazal album titled Aahat in 1980 and subsequently recorded many hits like Mukarar in 1981, Tarrannum in 1982, Mehfil in 1983, Pankaj Udhas Live at Royal Albert Hall in 1984, Nayaab in 1985 and Aafreen in 1986. After his success as a ghazal singer, he was invited to appear and sing for a film by Mahesh Bhatt, Naam. Udhas rose to further fame for singing in the 1986 film Naam, in which his song "Chitthi Aayee Hai" (the letter has arrived) became an instant hit. He did playback singing for many Hindi films after that. Albums and live concerts around the globe brought him fame as a singer. In 2006, Pankaj Udhas was awarded Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award.
A song titled Chandi Jaisa Rang hai tera, sone jaise bal (i.e. Your colour is like silver, your hair is like gold) was sung by Pankaj Udhas. Pankaj Udhas' older brother, Manhar Udhas was a stage performer that aided Pankaj in his introduction to musical performance. His first stage performance was during the Sino-Indian War, when he sang "Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo" and was given Rs. 51 by an audience member as a reward.

Pankaj Udhas is not even 5% of what Jagjit Singh was in terms of skills and selection of poetry. Jagjit was a maestro; had a great hold on Hindustani classical. Most of the so called ghazals of Pankaj Udhas are not ghazals but typical Bollywood styled geets. Those who know ghazals, don't even consider him as a ghazal singer.

That's true... जगजीत सिंग जी को ही ज्यादा सूनते है लोग...जगजीत जी अपने संगीत के करियर मे हमेशा उच्च स्थान पर कायम और कामयाब रहे है...शास्त्रीय संगीत मे पंकज उधास जी का नाम भी कहीं नहीं आता...पर जगजीत सिंग जी के नाम का जिक्र गीत गायन , गझल गायन , भजन गायन और शास्त्रीय संगीत मे भी सन्मान से किया जाता है.

I liked Pankaj Udhas quite a lot, but am surprised at what he said about Jagjit ji, Jagjit Singh is the uncrowned Emperor of ghazals who is unparalleled and will always remain unparalleled. Nobody can even compare to him. He is a different league altogether. Ghazals and Jagjit ji are synonyms with each other.
This gentleman truly lives in fool's paradise ! He is like Krishan Kumar who was better known as brother of Gulshan Kumar ! This so called singer was cheaper version of Jagjit singh for music companies whom Jagjit don't sing or sung very rarely !

Jagjit Ji is my fvt and literally he carried out the legacy of Ghazals. Though his range is limited and his choice is, but Pankaj Sir you have literally arrogantly discussed about Jagjit Ji. Your ghazals are typically a limited Bollywood Style songs. So sir do plz learn the value of Ghazals first ❤️

Who says Jagjit Ji’s range is limited. He had such a vast range. He even sang classical and took alaap’s like a piece of cake. His voice was deep, came from his soul and was absolutely mesmerising. Pankaj Udhas’s voice was just sweet and flat, no emotions or depth or variation.

I am shocked at Pankaj Udhas's remark about Jagjit Singh ji...Jagjit Singh is. Inimitable and a classically trained singer and exceptional composer...There can be no comparison between the two of them...In fact in one of the interviews when Asha Bhosleji was asked to rate singing of Pankaj Udhas she said she listens to only a few ghazal exponents such as Begum Akhtar...Mehdi Hasan sahab...GhulamAli and Jagjit Singh.

पंकज उधास जी का ये बयान सुनकर थोडा दुःख हूवा .. असल मे जगजीत सिंग जी के गायन का दायरा बहुत बडा है...गझल , गीत , भजन और शास्त्रीय संगीत मे भी जगजीत सिंग जी ने बहुत बडा योगदान दिया है ...उनकी मखमली आवाज ही काफी है दिल को सम्मोहित करने के लिये...गझल का नाम सुनते ही जैसे ' मिर्झा गालिब ' याद आते है वैसे ही ' जगजीत सिंग ' भी याद आते है...आज भी जगजीत जी के कुनबे मे करोडो दिवाने लोग हैं जो उनके गीत गझल गाकर खुद को गौरवान्वीत महसुस करते है....💐🙏 विविध रागो का आलाप जगजीत जी बडी ही आसानी से लेते है वो कर पाना और किसी गायक के बस की बात नहीं...जगजीत सिंग जी ने अपने गायन और संगीत से जग को जीत लिया है... जगजीत जी हर अंदाज मे गा लेते थे परंतु पंकज उधास जी नहीं.. 💐🙏

जगजीत सिंह जी की पंकज उदास के साथ तुलना करना ही गलत है, एक वह इंसान हैं जिसने हजारों गजलों और गीतों को संगीतबद्ध किया है और उसे खुद गाया है और दूसरा वह जिसने चंद फिल्मों में थोड़े से गाने गाए है जिन्हे आप ग़ज़ल भी नहीं कह सकते, जगजीत जी ने गज़ल को एक ऐसे मकाम तक पहुंचाया है जो की अब तक कोई भी बड़ा ग़ज़ल गायक नहीं कर पाया. बस इतना कहना चाहता हूं की सूरज और १०० वॉट के बल्ब की तुलना कभी हो ही नहीं सकती.

Jagjit Singh is beyond comparison. Pankaj Udhas is not even the dust under his feet. Anyone who is even asking this question does not have any idea about music or sensitivity. Pankaj Udhas sang only about Sharaab, Ghungroo etc and degraded ghazal and classical music. He had a few hits in the 80's and 90's but his body of work is dust before Jagjit Singh

He is wrong or maybe misguided. He lost much of his respect in the eyes of me by calling himself as the identity of ghazals because I still remember I started listening ghazals due to Jagjit Singh ji, and I started listening to him so late. Jagjit Singh ji was a senior to him and far above him. He should have never given such a ludicrous statement about Jagjit Singh ji.
