  • Here is my review of the new Martin style 2 tenor that I've owned since around September 2012. I explain some of the differences between the less expensive T1K and the USA made style 2. What should you buy? Watch this then! hehe
    Here's a link to my original T1K review: • Review of the new Mart...
    Also, my new 2K tenor arrived in summer 2013! I hope to finally do a review of the "3 Tenors..." in December 2013. hehe However, that new IZ tenor is now out and would make it 4 tenors! Someone else is welcome to review that uke! I can't do 4. 3 tenors is enough. hehe

    Thank you for the fantastic review! I am a collector of vintage Martin's and a few vintage Gibson ukuleles. My Vintage Martin tenor is the early 1940's, 12 frets to the body instead of 14 frets to the body. As I've become more interested in picking I have really missed the longer fret board. So I Finally broke down and bought a new Style 2 mahogany Martin two days ago. They are selling for over 1600 dollars, I got mine for 875! It's shipping out tomorrow and I am so excited. I wish I could find a review of vintage verses new. I can't wait to see how the neck profile compares and how the sound compares. My vintage tenor Martin has become my main player because of those two things. I'm really hoping the new one takes its place as my daily player😃. Now back to you. I have watched your videos for a while now. I love you sense of humor. Your reviews are very thorough! Your playing is inspirational. And if Martin isn't paying you- they should. I'm sure you have sold more ukulele's for them then they know. Great job Petey 👍

      Hi Laurie, thanks for your kind words. I checked out a few of your vids with your vintage ukes and you have a very nice collection, but I like a lot how you explain it's not all wine and roses with vintage ukes and they need repairs or have gotten damaged. 8-) I like that clarity. Your vintage sopranos are very cool! My uke friend Frank in Berlin has the "seal" Ohana copy. I love your original one! I have tried some vintage Martins over the years at musical events because people like to show me their old Martins and want me to test them out, but while they are great instruments, the new ones have their own voice too! Back in 2012-13 when I had a sudden influx of surplus cash and the Canadian dollar was at par with the US $, I went on a buying frenzy of the new Martin ukes! hehe I have no regrets on that front. hehe Luved every minute of it! I have no connection to Martin. I had just finally found the uke jangly sound and playability I had been looking for and my skills progressed in a quantum leap after that. Keep me posted about your style 2 tenor. I have to say I have the 2k tenor and I prefer that 10x more. I never got to do my review of it but I play it 50% of the time as my 3 cherry soprano.

      Well I've had mine for about a month. I do love it. Do I love it more than my vintage? Well I love the longer fret board:). As far as the comfort and sound- I still think my vintage one has an edge. For me there is nothing like the feel of a vintage Martin. The edges of the vintage Martin fretboards are rolled unlike the new ones. That is very comfortable! The old finish is much nicer than the grainy satin finish on my new one. I have polished my new satin one so that it is almost glossy now and much nicer. I also lowered the action a bit. I'm not sure in reality that my vintage ukulele sounds any better but it does sound different. They both sound like Martin's though:). I love the perfection of my new one and I love the imperfection of my vintage one-so go figure;). I know you said you love your Martin Koa 10x's more than the mahogany. I prefer two of the new ukulele's being made. One is Martin and the other is KoAloha. I have wanted a Koa Tenor and decided that I would get a new KoAloha Opio. I'm waiting for it to arrive. I have had two KoAlohas and they are really special. I love the construction of instruments as much as anything. I've rebuilt and tinkered with so many brands. Martin built in Pennsylvania and KoAloha built in Hawaii are very special instruments as far as their construction and sound. The proof that Martin is special are all the wonderful vintage Martin's still being played and enjoyed so many years after they were built. The bracing in the KoAloha is like nothing you have seen before (if you've looked inside a lot of ukuleles). They are the lightest ukuleles with the biggest sound and very comfortable to play. I have a concert Koa KoAloha that I play often. I had a first generation Opio that was Sapele but I gave it to my daughter. I am looking forward to the new KoAloha Opio Tenor as I have heard they are nearly as good as the Hawaiian made KoAloha's now. Keep up the playing and reviews-everyone enjoys them😃

      Thanks Laurie. Though, I wouldn't keep collecting ukes till the end of the world. Find the ukes you love and just play them and then stop buying more. I write my own songs so having an original uke becomes part of the compositional process and sound. Doing covers could be done on any quality uke. Yes, I try to inspire others but my own joy comes from within. No one owns me and tells me what to do. I create uke vids and song ad free and I'm free in the end.

    Seems like they'll be out at the end of May. I've decided not to order one since if it sounds close to the style 2 tenor, it's not worth having two of the same tenor ukes in mahogany. The tenor is booming so I'm waiting for my 2K tenor to arrive. I think that will be quieter. As for the 1T IZ, I'll let someone else do that review.

    Indeed, the player is the most important factor. However, ask any carpenter about using cheap tools to build a house... cheap dull saws, stripped screwdrivers, etc... junk will always be junk and will impede the competent builder or musican.

    Would you agree the artist is more important than the price of paint we use? A 500 dollar ukulele in the right hands is just as magical as a 50 dollar uke

    Petey, I am going to add a Martin Mahogany Tenor to my mix of Tenor Ukes . Did you ever get a chance to compare your 2M to the IZ model? I know the IZ has the more figured Mahogany wood, and I like the fact that some of the proceeds goes to support IZ's wife and daughter too. Both are very close in price through my local Martin dealer. But I'd like to get your view if you had the chance to compare them and arrived at an opinion between between the two? Best, Tiki Den

    • @PeteyHoudini
      @PeteyHoudini  9 років тому

      +Tiki Den : Honestly and I feel a bit bad about it... I've never touched/played a IZ model in my life. I only ever saw one in Hawaii high up on the shelf back in Feb 2015 and it seemed so esteemed, that I was afraid to ask the store owner if I could try it. No joke. I am much of a scaredy-cat at times.

    • @Uke_in_Flight
      @Uke_in_Flight 9 років тому

      +Peter Forrest well, I hope the opportunity arises for you to play one. Someone ordered one at my local Martin dealer, than backed out (and lost their deposit). The manager told me about it and offered it to me for the balance owed which was $300 less of of retail or about ,1350 + tax. It's still there but I haven't acted on the offer. It's a real looker and sounds lovely, but no they only have a T1K to compare to it... I'm more focused on going for the 3Cherry if I am going over the $1k threshold to be completely honest

    • @PeteyHoudini
      @PeteyHoudini  9 років тому

      +Tiki Den : I know how both the style 2 and 2k tenors play but I don't need another tenor. My 2k (I have no fascination or bias to koa) is just such lovely sounding instrument and those around tell me that too when I play it. I will be changing the strings on my 3 cherry this Halloween weekend at my friend's house over some libations of course, and she will help me apply the lemon oil on the mahogany fretboard. She's good with wood! We recently fixed up my style 2 soprano in the same way. Massive improvement in sound! Wow! Going over the $1K is serious business. Don't forget that I returned my first 3 cherry and got the second one... best soprano uke in my life. 8-) Been playing it tonight, right beside me.
