    Thank you. The breathing thing. Worked first go. I had carefully timed out some quick inhalations at various points but now I don't have to breath at all. Thanks, again.

    Excellent! Subscribing and looking forward to more videos and improving my playing. One "note" - "panting" is hyperventilation, in the physiological sense, and the effect is to "blow off" carbon dioxide. (Your blood oxygen concentration really doesn't increase, but you get light-headed/dizzy/uncomfortable.) When the CO2 level returns to normal, so does the reflex to breathe. So the effect is similar to that of a pearl diver who can hold his breath for a longer that usual time. This from a 75 y. old physician who is returning to the trumpet after 60 years. Never stop learning!

    • @TheTrumpetProf
      @TheTrumpetProf  5 років тому +1

      Hi. Thanks so much for your comment and for the explanation re CO2! I'd love to run a few things passed you from time to time as I'm always fascinated by the science and physiological aspects. Never stop learning! All best, TP

    • @j_hannigan
      @j_hannigan Рік тому

      “Overdosing on oxygen” is not a thing at this level. Panting does delay the buildup of carbon dioxide in the blood so the discomfort (similar to swimming underwater) is delayed. Yes, too much oxygen can be harmful. For most adults, an hour of 100% O2 can start of lung deterioration in humans. Taking air (without supplemental O2) has only 20.95% oxygen. To check this, search for Respiratory Physiology, or ask a Registered Respiratory Therapist or a pulmonologist.

    Interesting, I've never really thought about the breathing for this. My teacher years ago pencilled in a breath mark after the first quaver of the 5th bar, so I've always snatched a breath there. I just tried all the way through as you suggest, and yes, it is quite doable. Time to get the rest of it back under my fingers. Looking forward to more of these videos, thanks!

    Thanks for sharing you knowledge about playing the trumpet, helping us all to become better trumpet players! I like your videos!
    I could not resist leaving a comment on panting before you start to play this long phrase. The body reacts with an urge t breath both from either elevated levels of carbon dioxide and/or deminished levels of oxygen. When breathing normally the red blood cells are normally about 100% saturated with oxygen. By hyperventilating you cannot increase your oxygen reserv any more. The first mechanism urging you to breath while holding your breath is the buildup of carbon dioxide, so what happens when you hyperventilate is that you get rid of carbon dioxide from the blood so it takes longer to raise to levels that urges you to breath. Don't overdo it though since to low levels of carbon dioxide in the blood will make you light-headed or even pass out.
    Once again thanks for a good episode!

      The south sea pearl divers used to breath deeply so they could charge their lungs with oxygen and stay under for longer . This works even in a swimming bath without simultaneous trumpet playing!

    The goal might not be to play this in one breath, it might be to make a musical reason to take a breath, slight rubato and add the breath.

    Thanks for the video. Interesting description. The idea of “holding” the air I think would tend to make most people feel unwanted tension. Another way to think of it might be to use only the heat of the breath into the mouthpiece but no discernible movement of air. Same idea but different words to conceptualize. I guess whatever works for the particular individual. Keep the videos coming!

    Prof. I’ve just passed grade 6 ameb (Australian music examination board) and Arban 1,3,6,10,14 are one possible choice for a 5 pieces repertoire to pass grade 7. How many months of study wil Aruban 1 will require? I’m thinking 3 months study every day 1hr should getting me there for Arban 1 played at a reasonable pace. Cheers Prof. Anyone playing this proficiently should be at least give the chance to play 1st trumpet in a local concert band ? 😁

      Hi. Glad to hear I'm not the only "ancient," music loving nut on the planet! Started playing trumpet about 3 years ago again after 60+ years. Had a few lessons when I was 11, then dug the horn (an old cornet) out of storage only a handful of times (maybe 8 or 9 times) over those lost decades basically just to squeak out a couple of Christmas Carols. Was always surprised I could get any decent sound out of it and actually remembered my C Major scale. Good luck with your practice. And practice every day... even if it seems at times like you're not getting much better. Eventually things will fall into place.
      Paul Mayes is an exceptional player and teacher. He also has some good tips on his "Paul Mayes" UA-cam channel.

    Hi Paul, this technique is FANTASTIC!!!!!! I don't play classical or jazz, I do play mariachi music and I have been looking for answers about this for a while. I have been experimenting on my latest gigs, with SIGH, and also this technique in particular and It works perfectly for me. I 'm very grateful for your videos and wonderful advises. A quick question , what is a good posture to practice sitting down? Thanks

    So glad to have stumbled across these videos. So much great info! Even at the slow tempo I would have chipped at least ten notes. How do you increase your accuracy and consistency?

    • @TheTrumpetProf
      @TheTrumpetProf  5 років тому +3

      Hi. That is a question which for me has no straight forward answer. The common responses are valid: practice slowly, repetition etc. But if you are "chipping" lots of notes it becomes a physical technical issue and is impossible to give an accurate answer. Excessive jaw movement, throat tension. top lip tension, tongue technique etc it could be any one or a mix of these things.
      Without knowing your playing my best advice is to slur the entire passage but before you do:
      Play a long mid range note starting it with the sigh. After a few beats AND WITHOUT MOVING ANYTHING BUT THE TONGUE start to articulate. (Imagine you have a button which starts and stops the tongue. Turn it on and turn it off. On, off, on, off etc.)
      You need to isolate the long note and make it totally independent of the articulation. Get use to the sensation. Then while you are playing the slurred passage occasionally turn the tongue on and then turn it off so you continue to slur. If you are chipping notes it is most likely that your tongue is changing the shape and movement of your "system". See how you get on and let me know. All best, TP

    Hi Paul,
    I love your playing!
    The recording and book you published with the 14 Arban Char, I have enjoyed a lot. It is great now to see how you did Arban Char 1.
    Btw, in my Arban, edited by Herbert L. Clarke, there are several breath marks. Fist mark is in bar 5, so he kind of divedes the first 12 bars into to two.
    I wrote about your recording in 2009: ojtrumpet.net/articles/arban_char/
    Best wishes, Ole

    • @TheTrumpetProf
      @TheTrumpetProf  5 років тому +2

      Hi. I have a condition called dystonia which means I'm unable to hold the weight of the instrument with my left hand. I therefore pretend to support it with the LH just so I don't look lazy. I USE mouthpiece pressure (!!!!) to control many areas of my playing. It's a really efficient way to control your playing if used the right way. Thanks for your question. TP

  • @andytrowhill969

    Great videos and tips Paul. My question is how to take this through to the second time through on the DS when there isn’t the time for this preparation? Is the idea to build up sufficient capacity and perhaps tolerance of an increased CO2 level that the 13 bar final phrase becomes doable? In other words should we practice to do progressively longer phrases with this than is actually written or practice the same phrase progressively slower? Thanks

    • @TheTrumpetProf
      @TheTrumpetProf  5 років тому +1

      Hi Andy. Try to slow the first 12 down as much as possible in your practice. As you develop the technique of articulating without blowing, you'll then find it easier to add the extra bar going back when at performance speed. Good luck and thanks for the question. TP

    I see you have a rubber band or some string hooked on the third valve tuning slide and attached to the second valve tuning slide. What is it there for? Do you use it so that it pulls back the third slide on its own?

    • @christinacrawford3376
      @christinacrawford3376 5 років тому +1

      Tim Lawrence I have something similar that came with the Bach Artisan and use it because my third slide is so fast that it would open when held bell down under its own weight. Personally, I release the elastic while playing but others don’t mind the added resistance

    • @TheTrumpetProf
      @TheTrumpetProf  5 років тому +4

      Lifting your fingers and using my "slap valve" technique will help your playing sound cleaner and often stop split or cracked notes. Sometimes though, the preferred and best way of doing something isn't always possible due to physical constraints, as in my case. You are right to bring this up but look at my other videos and you'll probably work out why that is. Or maybe you won't . . . . hmmmm . . . cheerio!
