First Look at the Prototype Lomography Petzval 80.5mm f1.9 MKII Art Lens

- Birgit and the kind folks over at Lomography USA were nice enough to lend me their Prototype Petzval 80.5mm f1.9 MKII Art Lens. Petzval lenses are known for their swirly bokeh. Is this interesting swirly boi worth your money?

I'm here for the PRETZELS! I thought I heard someone had pretzels.
our next collab: shooting 35mm film on a pretzel
damn if only it was 79.5mm
bruh I'll let them know to shave off that 1mm
Trust me Lomography will never lend me anything too :)
😂😂
hahahahaha you never know!
"Be careful with it, it's the only prototype we have in the US"
Me: "It's gonna happen isn't it"
*KLONCHK*
can't take me anywhere
Love your humour and videography. I am a long time subscriber, but I should come back more often.
I got the all-black version with the bokeh control ring that allows you to control the amount of swirl. Way more versatile and discreet. I'm still testing it out. Like you said, the swirly bokeh depends entirely on your background and the distance from your subject. There seems to be a sweet spot one has to find. Dailing the bokeh ring to 1 gives you a pretty standard result you would get with most 80mm portrait lenses which is nice since the swirly bokeh can get a little distracting in some shots. Overall, it's a nice lens to have in one's bag of tricks.
This piece of glass is gorgeous - glad to see the teamwork with *Lomography!* I think it's a good fit. I might need to get one of these ... :D
Thanks bud!!
@@SweetLouPhotography any time!
Those shots came out nice! Haven't heard of this lens before, but the quality of the glass seems great. Also goes to show that you've got a pretty good photographer's eye ;)
Thanks so much!! Really appreciate that. It's a fun lens for sure!!
@@SweetLouPhotography Np man! Keep it up!
Lovely lens. Lovely photos. Lovely Lou.
Petzval is the gold topshit! This lens has the feel of the real thing! Love it!
Voiceover king. Honestly. 🤴🏼 Lol. Your videos make me want to get into photography!!!
Thanks Kenzie. You should :)
Cool lens i lik it👍
Interesting. I’ve done stuff before with bellows mounted lenses. It’s a cheap way to find what they’ll do. 👍🏽
Junji Ito's favourite lens
I still feel the shock in my bones!
Thanks for everything Birgit, you rock
Cool.
thanks buddy
this looks so fun lol
Thanks buddd
The final version of this lens seems to have hugely better flare resistance :O
Reminds me of the helios 44-2, is it much more different?
The two definitely are similar. Maybe once things calm down, if I can borrow it a bit longer from Lomography I can make a side by side. I'd say the swirls are more intense on the Petzval though. But at the same time, I feel like that's the whole point of the lens.
Agree, but gotta say swirl is pretty intense sometimes with the helios too 😅
I hope they will come out with a 50.5mm MKII .
The price is not as unreasonable as it once was, but truth to be told there are just nicer options in the vintage world if one is willing to dig a little in that direction. The possibilities for mirrorless bodies are endless, but there are some decent options for a 5D as well. They can swirl but also act as just a normal short tele lens, they handle better, and they won't loose value in the long run.
Very nice images, by the way.
Thanks much- yeah, I agree it definitely is pricey. I like the look, but you can do similar with a Helios, or even a projector lens (I feel like Mathieu Stern did a vid about that?) Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!
@@SweetLouPhotographyIf you get a good copy of the Biotar, you get the a similar look but way sharper at middle apertures with nicer, more deeply saturated colours with fine mechanics. Looks amazing on s35mm too: ua-cam.com/video/7eplCWgyrOY/v-deo.html
Right now I am in a real struggle, as I have so many great lenses and I really need to cut it down and instead I am seeing more and more interesting choices.
@@p_adam19 second hand price of a good biotar copy (in particular the 75mm one) is several times more expensive that this lomography thingie. Of course Zeiss is a way better investment though.
@@victordesabataYes, that is why I was linking the 58mm but there are many others in that range (like the Minolta 85/1.7)
Chris! David!
What's the front filter thread of this lens?
67mm.
Does this lens provide focus confirmation in EF mount?
I'm sorry, I filmed this quite a while ago and don't have the lens anymore so I can't confirm for you. I want to say it didn't work on my 6D, but I honestly don't remember

i like your shirt
oh thanks lol
80.5 if a weirdly specific focal length!
Right?? Haha. It took me so many takes to say it correctly hahaha
The moment Frank West appeared I knew you are one i should trust
I am so glad that joke made at least one person other than me smile haha
For a second I thought you got rid of 'like and subscribe Sweet Lou Photography.'
the classic, it needs to remain in most videos (unless there's a big enough blooper that would take the whole space haha)
