I love KEXP, but I forget just how much of an open-door policy they embody when it comes to welcoming all and everyone into their studio for the opportunity to voice their music and art to the world on their platform. I'm so thankful for their existence and the goodwill this is for the planet. I love Garifuna culture and all of Africa. Thank you KEXP for inviting The Garifuna Collective into your studio. Thank you for not letting history die and for keeping culture and art alive, especially for the oppressed and undervalued.
Beautiful!!! My family is Garifuna!! 🇧🇿🇧🇿🇧🇿 Watching this the day after my Dad, Rudy, passed away - 2 years ago 🕊️🙏🏾❤️ I feel his spirit with us always! ❤A dear friend Jenn, sent this to me.
I was introduced to Garifuna music through Andy Palacio's extraordinary album Wátina, may he rest in peace. I have loved the music since and would hope to visit Belize some day. Thank you for posting this video and introducing me to the wonderful Garifuna Collective.
So proud to see them on my favorite radio station on Earth, and so proud to see such wonderful things coming from the Garifuna culture (Honduras and Belize). Proud Honduran here!
First time I heard the Garifuna drums n chants I was 6 years old the sound went straight to my heart. I am Honduran. The sounds of the Caribbean runs through my veins. Thank you Garifunas 🇭🇳🌏🌎🌍🇭🇳🌈🎸🎸🎸
Also Honduran and likewise, I must have been around that age when I first heard punta and I fell in love with the music and dance. The West Africans that were taken against their will to be enslaved in the 1700s-1800s ended up being one of the Caribbean's most valuable gifts and beauties thanks to their resilience and perseverance and are now the Garifuna people. So proud of my Mayan, Aztec and African roots. We must be proud of our Caribbean blood, as there is no other Caribbean on this planet.
GARIFUNA TRIBES are Benin people of Ñigeria they left Benin kingdom because of forbidden traditional law during the Regine of king Ewuare the great after the two son pass away in war the same day in1440=1473 some of them are in Ghana Call GA TRiBE some in HONDURAS Call GARIFUNA TRIBES in BELIZEAN may God bless them amen
But the Garifuna language is 100% AMERICAN INDIAN Arawakan family and related to Lokono of Venezuela. Large group of words related to male activities including number 3 uruwa are from Karin'a language also of Venezuela but unrelated. That's a lot of pre Columbus history that begun as part of South American cassava culture: you find exactly same implements deep into South America, in some Caribbean Islands, in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua (yes we visited Orinoco settlement with my late Garifuna husband). Returning to Garifuna language: it borrows number system from French, alongside 167 VERBS; French sellers came to St. VINCENT before the English and had good relations. Of note is that Garifuna fought against the British alongside the French in the end of 18c. Still prior to that the language borrowed about 50 nouns from English. Now we have the year 1797: the British won that war. They want all the St. VINCENT for their sugar plantations. So they put 2,445 Garifuna men, women and children on ten Navy ships and go West to the island of Roatan, just so of the Caribbean Coast of Honduras which belongs to the Spanish. The rest is history as they say. The people band together with the Spanish against the British pirates and settle near Trujillo, Honduras. From there they expand and establish 52 villages along the Coasts of Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize. The language borrows some Spanish vocabulary. These lexical borrowings amount to little in Comparison with English or Japanese. Garifuna is as Arawakan as it can be. Garifuna are Black Indians. They were NEVER slaves. It happened that due to strong currents around the St. VINCENT Island many Spanish slaving ships wrecked there and the purported African slaves became free, settle on the Island and mix with the local Garifuna Indians accepting their language and customs.
Is the song Banda on music platforms? I haven't found it and I love it so so much! Went to see you in Bogota in 2019 and I am in love with the Garifuna Music! Your music is a wonderful conpanion in my life!
