Unfortunately we live in a culture that glamorizes pleasure and indulgence, you know like food, drugs, sex, etc. And the peculiar thing with weed is unlike alcohol (drunkenness, cirrhosis), sex (STDs), tobacco (cancer), or food (weight gain, hypertension etc), the popular narrative around marijuana is that there is no drawback to it. The simple truth is anything can become addictive, and it's easy to replace one addiction with another. I'm glad Kevin Smith seems to have figured this out, especially because he likely was in an environment for so long that enabled his weed addiction.
Also, I've done EMDR therapy, and it's kinda like imagining yourself going back in time to stick up for your kid self when no one else was, like some comicbook

You guys are the complete and relatable discussion with great comedy. Always watching these. I met Smith at a recent con and I must admit, I had my reservations. In my mind I felt like “yeah he’s probably ok/nice, but he can’t be that great of a guy as he wants us to see or believe.” But in all honesty, he was so sweet. Spent a much longer time with every person, gave me the biggest hug, etc. I’m sure he’s had some bad business and enemies made, no doubt, but he comes off as a good guy.

I am a Kevin Smith fan which also probably equates to me being part of his biggest critics. He announces everything which to me feels like he’s not really confronting the issues. This thirty minute speech felt like he was speaking from expertise based on a very short therapeutic break. It’s essential to his identity to be talked about and for better or worse be in the media in some form. Even to the point that he announces that he won’t be as accessible on the web and almost daily a new post pops up about something personal or personal appearance. Just having experience with addiction and those close to me who have regained their lives, it’s a lot of work and I hope he actually takes a break to confront the issues.

I know what you mean. This is the 3rd or 4th time in the past 15 years where he's made a big deal about an alleged breakthrough. I'm not trying to be callous or diminish what he's going through. I just hope this one sticks.

    • @MrFonseca75

He seems to take drastic turns rather than really working the “program”. Breakthroughs like the crazy diets and then jumping headfirst into Mary Jane are prime examples. That also ties in with self esteem issues. He’s chasing the high of creating an identity.

I did EMDR after being traumatized during a bad experience with chemotherapy. The first time I went through BEP chemotherapy in 2019 (and my second time going through chemotherapy overall) I wasn't properly medicated to deal with the nausea it causes. As a result I got REALLY sick, unimaginably so, really. Afterwards I found myself unable to look at, much less drink, clear liquids (including water) because somehow my brain associated that with the chemotherapy that had made me so incredibly ill. I wasn't even able to brush my teeth using water, as soon as I took a sip of water I started to throw up. Similarly, while peeing, I had to focus very hard on other things and not the clear liquid that was coming out of me, or I would start throwing up, It was hell. EMDR essentially allowed my brain to disconnect the chemotherapy (which, in this specific case, had looked like water) from other liquids. It stopped being a traumatic trigger for extreme nausea. After about three sessions I was able to drink water again, brush my teeth using water, and pee again without throwing up. It can really be extremely effective. I was totally amazed at how well it worked.

I just realized that not only did he process his trauma through fat jokes in his movies but there's also tons of jokes in his works about people being forced to perform sexual acts against their will, like when Jay tries to force Silent Bob to give the security guard a blow job in an alley. It's kind of eerie knowing about his personal experiences now.

  • @Staatus_Quo
    @Staatus_Quo Рік тому +9

It sounds like he went through "Depersonalization Disorder." It's triggered when your brain perceives overwhelming trauma.
I went through this back in early March honestly. It's terrifying. You feel like you're outside of your body, and walking behind yourself. You feel out of sync with yourself by a good 5 to 10 seconds. Not able to control what you perceive that you're doing.
You feel like you're in the passenger seat, can't stop yourself from actions or things you are saying. It can last minutes, and some people say it can last a lot longer. I was in this Depersonalization state for about 3 weeks.
As time goes on, and you aren't focusing on it, you start to feel more connected. But; when you think you're doing better... BOOM! You refocus on it. It felt like it would never end honestly. And over that 3 weeks, I thought less and less about it until I was reconnected.
My doctor said that is how it ends, and there is no real treatment. It happened just like he said. And when it was over, I talked to friends, and found a couple of people that went through this before and never knew it had a name. It was a crazy experience, and if any of you ever experience it in the future, just know it ends. Just let it run its course, and know it will end. It is a nightmare while it happens, but it does end.

i think the hardest part of weed addiction is that it IS helpful especially if u had negative thought loops or depressive episodes before use, but its an easy fix. With any easy fix, its really a temporary band aid but find reasons to stop use and deal with ur issues in a confrontational and real way is hard. Often it takes a manic episode or psychotic break to bring u to ur senses.

Most substances, I'd argue pretty much all of them are actually really mild when you actually take them compared to what you might think they do. I've had this with pretty much everything I've taken and it always surprises me to shatter that image DARE gave you. Devils lettuce is especially a mild substance but definitely its not for everyone. I've met so many people in my life who are crazy even when they are sober so no crap these people shouldn't take anything, they can't even breath regular air without going psycho (because that's what they are).
Still I wish every substance in this world was legal because I am personally not responsible for other people's health and I should be able to enjoy what I want. I can open tiktok without doing a "jump under the train" challenge, I can drink around 20 beers a year in total, I can eat mcdonalds only once a month, I can play video games... wait scratch that, I do unhealthy amount of video games, but the point is just because I can't control my gaming doesn't mean it should be made illegal for normies who just want to play 2 hours of minecraft on a saturday evening. BTW if you are doing good in life and have a strong mental health, most substances can be really amazing and I honestly recommend trying some of them out, BUT ONLY if you are a normal functioning person.
When it comes to Kevin smith... It's embarrassing to brag about weed when you're 40 and then go overboard with it. It's like, if you had not used social media before and you were like, alright, let's try out this facebook. And then instead of creating your profile and you know, using it like a normal person you went ahead and started arguing about politics with everyone, posted your naked pictures in there and went out to like your highschool classmates pictures from 2009.

14:39 At about 7min I had typed up an honestly rather critical & ugly break down on my views of Smith of now compared to days of yore. Ultimately I chose to delete it & keep watching. This right here sounds like acknowledgment on Smith's part of how I was perceiving him. So, if nothing else, he's got self awareness in this aspect.

There is something so gross about Kevin making a video like this. Like, he can't just have these realizations in private? Like isn't the whole point how he needs validation through other people constantly? So what does he do? Makes a video about his sexual trauma to get even more validation from other people? It's like he's learned nothing.

I will say this about the whole weed thing though. Its going to hit people differently depending on who they are, just like with alcohol or any other drug. I know people who smoke it all the time and lead pretty normal lives. Some people just can't handle it and incorporate it into their lives in a positive way. I enjoyed it the same way a person might have a beer every night to unwind and relax. I felt it enhanced expietences and turned off the never-ending monologue that seems to go on in my mind. I felt less worried about the negative aspects of my life and overall smoothed me out a bit. However I could tell it was sapping my motovation to do things I love and just decided I was better off without it. The munchies were especially bad and I gained 20lbs while smokong it after having lost 60lbs. That was the last straw for me.
Overall, I'm not going to say weed is harmless, but it all depends on you, how you react to it and the reason you're doing it in the first place. I think it's way less dangerous than alcohol though and I don't see it as a gateway drug.
I am a big proponent of psychedelics though. Mushrooms, LSD, even DMT, most people should try them once. They'll teach you so much about yourself that you could have never learned without them and it's impossoble for them to become adictive or habit-forming.

Kevin Smith is the exact "cult of personality" type of person that Frankie himself criticized Betty White (and Bill Nye/Neil Patrick Harris/etc) for being. He made a couple of decent movies (all of which don't hold up anymore IMO) and has just milked a career out of those first couple movies. Plus he's annoying as hell constantly crying about some dumb shit on social media every other week. I'm sick of hearing about this guy.

I could be totally wrong but this rings absolute bs to me. The go to of a star in crisis is sexual trauma and other historical teasing. It is the same story for them and it always comes out after the phone stops ringing or some backlash. No one takes him or this thoughts seriously and he has been a phony and shill for these companies for a long time now that he has to say something to get some kind of fanbase back. How ironic that his last film was critically panned, multi million flop (just like the last couple of films) and now he comes out with the trauma crap. It is modern textbook Hollyweird "pity me" standard fare that is all too common nowadays. If I am wrong then God forgive me but this rings so fake and insincere that I dismiss it completely...within a certain measure.
