I came for the Cinemassacre commentary, staying for you guys. Really enjoy your down to earth takes!
Literally same.
Yup
I’m so sorry, April!
I like the little guy's subtle humor. The one where he wore the short shorts and had his sack hanging out the whole time was hilarious
they pilfered james' audience because they are plagiarists and propagandists
as much as i hate to say it, i think my boyfriend opened the gate to Kevin's mental breakdown. we were at a Q&A for Clerks 3. the question my boyfriend asked was why he was always putting himself down when making jokes. Kevin told us about the waterslide incident. he said after that he would put himself down before anyone else had the chance to
You guys are great. I came for the AVGN drama but then I stayed for the good vibes and funny content. I could watch a podcast like this every day, I wish you blow up in views so you can do this as your main job.
Unfortunately we live in a culture that glamorizes pleasure and indulgence, you know like food, drugs, sex, etc. And the peculiar thing with weed is unlike alcohol (drunkenness, cirrhosis), sex (STDs), tobacco (cancer), or food (weight gain, hypertension etc), the popular narrative around marijuana is that there is no drawback to it. The simple truth is anything can become addictive, and it's easy to replace one addiction with another. I'm glad Kevin Smith seems to have figured this out, especially because he likely was in an environment for so long that enabled his weed addiction.
Also, I've done EMDR therapy, and it's kinda like imagining yourself going back in time to stick up for your kid self when no one else was, like some comicbook
You guys are the complete and relatable discussion with great comedy. Always watching these. I met Smith at a recent con and I must admit, I had my reservations. In my mind I felt like “yeah he’s probably ok/nice, but he can’t be that great of a guy as he wants us to see or believe.” But in all honesty, he was so sweet. Spent a much longer time with every person, gave me the biggest hug, etc. I’m sure he’s had some bad business and enemies made, no doubt, but he comes off as a good guy.
He’s a great guy. I’m glad he’s working on stuff.
I am a Kevin Smith fan which also probably equates to me being part of his biggest critics. He announces everything which to me feels like he’s not really confronting the issues. This thirty minute speech felt like he was speaking from expertise based on a very short therapeutic break. It’s essential to his identity to be talked about and for better or worse be in the media in some form. Even to the point that he announces that he won’t be as accessible on the web and almost daily a new post pops up about something personal or personal appearance. Just having experience with addiction and those close to me who have regained their lives, it’s a lot of work and I hope he actually takes a break to confront the issues.
I know what you mean. This is the 3rd or 4th time in the past 15 years where he's made a big deal about an alleged breakthrough. I'm not trying to be callous or diminish what he's going through. I just hope this one sticks.
He seems to take drastic turns rather than really working the “program”. Breakthroughs like the crazy diets and then jumping headfirst into Mary Jane are prime examples. That also ties in with self esteem issues. He’s chasing the high of creating an identity.
@@robertbrubaker607 might also relate to why he gets so involved in creating new projects and then ultimately scrapping them so many times throughout his career.
I did EMDR after being traumatized during a bad experience with chemotherapy. The first time I went through BEP chemotherapy in 2019 (and my second time going through chemotherapy overall) I wasn't properly medicated to deal with the nausea it causes. As a result I got REALLY sick, unimaginably so, really. Afterwards I found myself unable to look at, much less drink, clear liquids (including water) because somehow my brain associated that with the chemotherapy that had made me so incredibly ill. I wasn't even able to brush my teeth using water, as soon as I took a sip of water I started to throw up. Similarly, while peeing, I had to focus very hard on other things and not the clear liquid that was coming out of me, or I would start throwing up, It was hell. EMDR essentially allowed my brain to disconnect the chemotherapy (which, in this specific case, had looked like water) from other liquids. It stopped being a traumatic trigger for extreme nausea. After about three sessions I was able to drink water again, brush my teeth using water, and pee again without throwing up. It can really be extremely effective. I was totally amazed at how well it worked.
Absolutely incredible.
EJ and Franky have some awesome chemistry. Love this podcast
Looking back, my parents never had the tv on in the morning - that’s continued with me into adulthood. Once the tv goes on, it’s a sign not much is going on. Definitely makes the weekend different from the weekdays. Would encourage you continue no tv on during the mornings… looking back im glad my parents made that decision.
I just realized that not only did he process his trauma through fat jokes in his movies but there's also tons of jokes in his works about people being forced to perform sexual acts against their will, like when Jay tries to force Silent Bob to give the security guard a blow job in an alley. It's kind of eerie knowing about his personal experiences now.
It sounds like he went through "Depersonalization Disorder." It's triggered when your brain perceives overwhelming trauma.
I went through this back in early March honestly. It's terrifying. You feel like you're outside of your body, and walking behind yourself. You feel out of sync with yourself by a good 5 to 10 seconds. Not able to control what you perceive that you're doing.
You feel like you're in the passenger seat, can't stop yourself from actions or things you are saying. It can last minutes, and some people say it can last a lot longer. I was in this Depersonalization state for about 3 weeks.
As time goes on, and you aren't focusing on it, you start to feel more connected. But; when you think you're doing better... BOOM! You refocus on it. It felt like it would never end honestly. And over that 3 weeks, I thought less and less about it until I was reconnected.
My doctor said that is how it ends, and there is no real treatment. It happened just like he said. And when it was over, I talked to friends, and found a couple of people that went through this before and never knew it had a name. It was a crazy experience, and if any of you ever experience it in the future, just know it ends. Just let it run its course, and know it will end. It is a nightmare while it happens, but it does end.
Been dealing with dp since February 2011. Yup
@@mikejpete holy hell man. The month or so I dealt with it was hell. I can't imagine it going that long. I'm sorry bro.
@@Staatus_Quo its kind of a super power if you read the tape in stocks. Sometimes. I graduated college with it in 2016. But maintaining relationships/dating is kinda hard. Job, and apartment and stoic persona easy peasy
Guys I want to tell you that while there were a lot of factors, hearing you guys talk about this weed Kevin smith thing helped me quit, and it's the best thing I ever did. I was like Kevin, all day long every day. Also I smoked carts so it was honestly probably worse. I want to thank you guys for playing a part in waking me up. The video you guys put out about this a while back was the moment that began a turning point for me.
Anything can be poison,
Moderation is the cure
Congratulations I have a similar situation and it's been close to six months for me and it's helped my memory and ability to work through complicated problems. I'd previously relied on weed to regulate my anxiety but I feel so much better just getting exercise and not being reliant on substances.
As someone who did copious amounts of the hard stuff:
They're really not even a temporary solution. They're a massive problem disguising itself as a solution
Reality is just a crutch for people who can't handle drugs
As someone who used to mow acres of paddocks, I would suggest investing in some hearing protection when mowing. I got a hard hat(helps protect from the sun beating down on your head) and flip down muffs that clip onto the hard hat for under $40 total and it made a huge difference.
Modern day Kevin Smith is kinda hit or miss, but I'm glad he put out this video. When it comes to mental health it's good to see that everyone goes through shit, and none of us are alone.
I just met him a couple nights ago...He was extremely sweet, and fun...I hope he will be healed sweet soul
He switched from one vice (food) to another vice (pot). He went all in on the mary jane when he started dieting. Both have health consequences when abused, but the weed abuse will hit on a psychological level. Unfortunately for him, it also zapped away the personality and humor that made him big in the 90s.
you can get high regularly but you can't get high ALL THE TIME. especially when you're using it to cope...
@@anthonyrowland9072Also, he says that he falls into addiction to escape reckoning with his real problems.
Kevin Smith was a God in the 90s. Sad to see his downfall over the last 20 years.
This is a spooky episode for me. I recently gave up weed and i'm listening to this while mowing the lawn. 😂
Based on his behavior the last few years this shouldn’t be a big surprise. I hope that he takes a step back and takes care of himself. I can’t help but wonder if his heavy cannabis use made his health challenges only worse.
I also feel like kevin might be in the early stages of some sort of calcium based neurodegenerative disease. Kevin says that his dentist told him his body was attacking his jaw bone and shrinking it. A lot of brain and heart disease has to do with calcium channels. I have a family member who has calcium deposits in their brain and its causing mental health problems and movement issues.
Didn't his dad die fairly young? There might just be poor longevity running in the family.
Also, it's really strange that Kevin is aging much faster and worse than Jason Mewes, who was a pretty bad drug addict for a while.
I find that most of my problems are calcium based
i think the hardest part of weed addiction is that it IS helpful especially if u had negative thought loops or depressive episodes before use, but its an easy fix. With any easy fix, its really a temporary band aid but find reasons to stop use and deal with ur issues in a confrontational and real way is hard. Often it takes a manic episode or psychotic break to bring u to ur senses.
You guys are really covering this well.
This is what happens when a dude from Jersey spends to much time in California.
💯. Cali is looney.
After watching and laughing at a lot of the Cinemassacre stuff, I'm genuinely impressed at the level of respect and nuance with which you treated this topic. Huge fan of both AVGN and Kevin Smith. I love how down to Earth you guys are. you definitely know when to joke and when to reel back. Was kinda iffy about subscribing to a channel purely for AVGN related content but you guys won me over with your personalities. Keep up the great content, dudes.
"I just bought my wife a bread maker. How can I turn this into content?"
I feel you. I just bought my wife an expensive set of cookware and a new $400 dollar vacuum. She refuses to use them.
/s
I watched this yesterday and was hoping you guys would talk about it!
He needs someone to tell him hes good all the time. Man, that sounds EXACTLY like Chris Farley. Thankfully Kevin Smith didn't self medicate like Chris did. He was gone way too soon.
These videos are so good. You teach me a lot about a healthy mindset
Repressed memories is bullshit btw. Look it up.
I randomly found you from the AVGN stuff that went viral and it was so well done I clicked this when it was recommended too. Subscribing now :)
I get psychosis when I smoke pot. Every single time. It is the most terror filled experience I've ever dealt with.
Weed has become stronger and stronger over the years especially since legalization. This ain’t your dads weed, so if you’re ever curious on trying pot I’d highly recommend something light. I’ll only smoke ditch weed that isn’t very strong, I like using it before bed with melatonin. But fuck you couldn’t pay me to smoke some of that high end stuff, it’s insanely strong.
So kevin been smoking as long as i have. I recently been having panic attacks everytime i smoked. I looked it up and it seems around 13 years of smoking is when people start having these symptoms from smoking like me and kevin have and for as long as we did. I barely smoke a bowl a day and have experienced a ton of trauma in my life. It really does get to be too much. I feel like the pandemic brought out these psychotic episodes as well. Wood hawker who doesnt do drugs had a psychotic anxiety episides as well and made an anxiety video about it recently. Maybe the society we live in is starting to feel unreal with all this technology and world evolving and we arnt use to it
Thank you for talking about this, guys!
Packing a bowl while I listen, you two would probably spit on me
Kevin Smith looking like he got cast for Earthworm Jim 4
Like his work or not, Kevin Smith is a real one.
Kevin Smith is so weird, swear to God. There's never been, is, or doubt will ever be another director that tried as hard to also be a public figure.
Like, you're a Hollywood director, man. You worked with Affleck and Damon, why the need to always put your life on camera
He’s not weird, but he’s too open with the general public. well, for me that would be a bit personal. We are all different, if it helps him heal good for him.
In the social media era, a lot of celebrities are over-exposed. I don't think anyone thought negatively about Smith until the Too Fat To Fly saga.
What are you talking about? How was Kevin Smith bringing his life on camera with Chasing Amy??
I'm just sick of hearing about him in general. He's always crying about some shit on Twitter. He thinks he's more important than he really is
Absolute tool
The thc content in modern marijuana is insane compared to the old weed you used to buy from your sleazy uncle Ron while you were in high school. No human should be pumping that much electric lettuce their gourds.
Happy Sunday. Just got back from church. Love you guys. Great video. My original comment was erased as I got sour cream on my phone. Cheers!
Oooooh! Watch it quick before any copy strike shenanigans!
Weed makes you complacent to stay in the same spot and not improve yourself. Kevin probably realised this and is ashamed of all the time he wasted.
Losers are drawn to weed. Weed doesn't make you a loser.
It certainly changed his films, not that they were ever masterpieces. It seems like his career really took a decline after Zach and Miri. It was so cheesy but still good because it’s Kevin smith. Everything after Zach and Miri is just horrible, it’s like some straight to video crap from the 90s.
His friend Walt (from Tell Em Steve) told him he was smoking too much weed awhile ago and he was terribly rude to Walt. Kevin went on their podcast and said Kevin smoking weed gave all Tell Em Steve all their success (at the same time pretty much forcing Walt out of his job at Kevin's comic store). He obviously has issues, but he is someone that has consistently been unable to handle any negative factor in his life and just blames everything else.
I'm still a smoker but im glad people are finally being honest about the effects of constantly being high like this.
Its always been weird to me that smokers try to argue that weed has no downside. It always felt like people fron the 1800s trying to convince thenaelves that tobacco was harmless.
It’s an over correction from being unfairly demonized
13:15 - This is so true and it's incredibly hard to break away from this habit.
I find myself smoking less. Part of the reason is I hate the company I work for and want a new job, so I want to be sure I can pass a drug test on short notice; but I also get paid enough for an easy enough job and can't find anything better, so I'm not in a hurry. I've also dove headfirst into miniature painting since last Fall, a skill I started to develop in the fourth grade but didn't practice for many years until now, and I feel being high would fuck with my precision.
New Listener here..I was getting fed y'all's video's and they were mostly James rolf and Kevin Smith ones I wondered why...but then I popped over here and seen it's most likely because the sheer amount of them 😂 but they are still a very fun watch and I feel like an absolute expert on James and Kevin now lol fun stuff fellas
Good to meet you! I’m sure there are many more on Disney, Star Wars, and Marvel, but yeah the algorithm has been amplifying the James Rolfe ones in particular because people are most interested in them and engage with them.
@@RedCowArcade awesome yes I been downloading episodes and listening at work..even if it's a topic I don't care about I genuinely find y'all interesting and funny
@Red Cow Arcade I genuinely think that's because you guys, for the most part, are the least needlessly inflammatory and the most succinct. Or at least your guys' takes don't take a very long time proportionately to explain the situation, why its a thing, what you guys think etc.
Ironically I lift stuff for a living and still the only way I ever hurt my back is sneezing or sleeping wrong not actually lifting it's ridiculous lol
kevin got a ton of mean oddly personal reviews and comments a bout his movies over the year. i mean, way meaner than a review of jay and silent bob strike back or jersey girl needed to be even if you didn't like them. i think it was a lot of "if i got his chance, i would make true art" type guys who were just jealous.
it wild how people shit so hard on a guy with a real heart. he just wanted make fun and kinda sentimental movies and people spit in his face. that had to be devastating for someone like kevin. come all that way and just wanna make people happy and get overt "fuck yous"..
Yeah I remember being a kid and having those moments where I would say "i'm bored". I don't have those moments anymore due to technology and I think it's made us appreciate basically nothing.
There's a myth that some weird skinny guy killed Kevin Smith and took up his persona. Weird to see that's really what happened in a way.
13:45 I completely relate- being pissed that lawnmower is louder than the media I’m pumping into my ears. 😂
Telling a story to explain your problems has some utility but not a lot. We all have a story but not all of us have a psychotic episode. Kevin is a story teller by trade so it makes sense that he wants to focus on his story but there is more going on. There's also a biological component i.e. Kevin's brain chemistry may be predisposed to schizophrenia. Heavy Marijuana use would also fall under a biological explanation. I'm a Christian and believe Kevin has a soul and that's part of this too.
A fairly easy and effective meditation technique that might help: focus on a repeated sound and visual in your mind while fully inhaling and exhaling through the nose. Also, if you can allow and even embrace difficult emotions to run that course, it should help a bit. If you can get a few minutes of this everyday, some mental benefit should follow
Lol amazing that you also were one of those DARE essay winners. I had the exact same experience basically in 5th grade, I read my essay in front of anyone and won a DARE bear. Still have it somewhere. There are definitely overreactions to overreactions in every societal movement and the truth ends up being somewhere in the middle.
Great discussion and analyst. Thanks guys.
Frankie has such tiny hands. 😂 Late here but i find myself having one earbud in while I'm wearing gaming headphones playing a video game and listening to something on UA-cam at the same time. I'm so programmed. When I mow the lawn or work in my shop I listen to nothing and I always feel better afterwards.
I'm not a psychiatrist or anything, but I personally know two seperate people who smoked a tremendous amount of Marijuana who suffered mental breaks after losing a lot of weight. Now Kevin Smith too. There may be some sort of connection.
Or not, I dunno.
Kevin Smith should just become the high priest of that Church of Captain America he wanted to start.
I love that the more I listen to Red Cow, the more hints there are revealed of their Christian background & beliefs. God bless you both❤️
I disagree, they come off so practical and self aware. Then it is all undercut by tying it to one of the biggest coping mechanisms out there.
All love though
Most substances, I'd argue pretty much all of them are actually really mild when you actually take them compared to what you might think they do. I've had this with pretty much everything I've taken and it always surprises me to shatter that image DARE gave you. Devils lettuce is especially a mild substance but definitely its not for everyone. I've met so many people in my life who are crazy even when they are sober so no crap these people shouldn't take anything, they can't even breath regular air without going psycho (because that's what they are).
Still I wish every substance in this world was legal because I am personally not responsible for other people's health and I should be able to enjoy what I want. I can open tiktok without doing a "jump under the train" challenge, I can drink around 20 beers a year in total, I can eat mcdonalds only once a month, I can play video games... wait scratch that, I do unhealthy amount of video games, but the point is just because I can't control my gaming doesn't mean it should be made illegal for normies who just want to play 2 hours of minecraft on a saturday evening. BTW if you are doing good in life and have a strong mental health, most substances can be really amazing and I honestly recommend trying some of them out, BUT ONLY if you are a normal functioning person.
When it comes to Kevin smith... It's embarrassing to brag about weed when you're 40 and then go overboard with it. It's like, if you had not used social media before and you were like, alright, let's try out this facebook. And then instead of creating your profile and you know, using it like a normal person you went ahead and started arguing about politics with everyone, posted your naked pictures in there and went out to like your highschool classmates pictures from 2009.
14:39 At about 7min I had typed up an honestly rather critical & ugly break down on my views of Smith of now compared to days of yore. Ultimately I chose to delete it & keep watching. This right here sounds like acknowledgment on Smith's part of how I was perceiving him. So, if nothing else, he's got self awareness in this aspect.
Kev got super drunk on the latest episode of Fatman Beyond and while it was funny to see, everyone in the chat was like "OH NO IT BEGINS"
Great idea by his publicist!
lol I won one of those DARE medals in middle school.
I want a movie with smith and rdj playing brothers.
Wouldn't it be awesome if kev and boogie had a chat about all this. Kev would be ideal on boogie's new show
17:18 You're a stronger man than I, that notion always loses in my head 🥴
The other point is, why go through a People magazine website which caters to a more mainstream audience and is essentially a company that pays for celebrity access? It came off a little awkward with the People branding.
You answered your own question: He went through people because it's a more mainstream audience and is likely to reach more people who need that kind of help than if he were to just release it through his own channels.
Kev is a cool dude!!!!! I will flip someone for him.
❤
Was the other guy allowed inside "People's" UA-cam channel?
I don't know why, but thin Kevin Smith is so hard to look at.
There is something so gross about Kevin making a video like this. Like, he can't just have these realizations in private? Like isn't the whole point how he needs validation through other people constantly? So what does he do? Makes a video about his sexual trauma to get even more validation from other people? It's like he's learned nothing.
Yeah Kevin sucks. What else is new?
When you guys gonna cover Intellivision Amico?
"You can turn your back on a man, but never turn your back on a drug." - HST
Our society has turned its back on marijuana.
it's not just those three things, it's the 237 other things that happened that the forgot about. death by 1000 cuts as a kid...
Hope comments I've made here haven't been taken seriously because I love red cow
Kevin Smith is a classic Hollywood celebrity. guy seems super disingenuous and I don't take anything he says at face value.
He had a falling out with the TESD guys?
I'm gonna go ahead and say it. You got a real Orgazmo intimately meets Walt Flanagan look going. But f it. You're your own guy. Great Content from my end. I love Weed! Nothing but love for Big Kev, cuz he'll alway's be big Kevin to me, him True Fans!!
hes basically boogie2988 but smarter
If only we could all be as blessed as Mr. Smith when it comes to “trauma”.
I would never knock Kevin Smith's personal problems and I hope that he continues to get help. However, I just don't really get the dude and have not for a while. I feel like he is going down the same downfall as someone like Seth Rogan which is both used to be funny & entertaining but sort of..... stopped.
Compulsive escapism of any kind is not the solution to your troubles.
P.S. EMDR is kind of a pseudosciencey flim-flam, but it does work on people who are taken in by it. It's a lot like a polygraph test in that way.
Whaddaya' know. Kay-Smith finds a way to make himself relevant, again.
Let's see how far this goes....
I will say this about the whole weed thing though. Its going to hit people differently depending on who they are, just like with alcohol or any other drug. I know people who smoke it all the time and lead pretty normal lives. Some people just can't handle it and incorporate it into their lives in a positive way. I enjoyed it the same way a person might have a beer every night to unwind and relax. I felt it enhanced expietences and turned off the never-ending monologue that seems to go on in my mind. I felt less worried about the negative aspects of my life and overall smoothed me out a bit. However I could tell it was sapping my motovation to do things I love and just decided I was better off without it. The munchies were especially bad and I gained 20lbs while smokong it after having lost 60lbs. That was the last straw for me.
Overall, I'm not going to say weed is harmless, but it all depends on you, how you react to it and the reason you're doing it in the first place. I think it's way less dangerous than alcohol though and I don't see it as a gateway drug.
I am a big proponent of psychedelics though. Mushrooms, LSD, even DMT, most people should try them once. They'll teach you so much about yourself that you could have never learned without them and it's impossoble for them to become adictive or habit-forming.
you profit off that suffering
Kevin Smith is the exact "cult of personality" type of person that Frankie himself criticized Betty White (and Bill Nye/Neil Patrick Harris/etc) for being. He made a couple of decent movies (all of which don't hold up anymore IMO) and has just milked a career out of those first couple movies. Plus he's annoying as hell constantly crying about some dumb shit on social media every other week. I'm sick of hearing about this guy.
He definitely has a strong fan base, but unlike those other people, it’s much easier to find people who are annoyed or repelled by him than those who love him. He’s lost sooo much good will with his behavior.
Too much soy, that's his problem.
With everything going on with KS, I'm expecting him to come out and say he's gay or something.. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
That explains his politics.
I could be totally wrong but this rings absolute bs to me. The go to of a star in crisis is sexual trauma and other historical teasing. It is the same story for them and it always comes out after the phone stops ringing or some backlash. No one takes him or this thoughts seriously and he has been a phony and shill for these companies for a long time now that he has to say something to get some kind of fanbase back. How ironic that his last film was critically panned, multi million flop (just like the last couple of films) and now he comes out with the trauma crap. It is modern textbook Hollyweird "pity me" standard fare that is all too common nowadays. If I am wrong then God forgive me but this rings so fake and insincere that I dismiss it completely...within a certain measure.
It reminds me of Axl Rose: “As a child, I was abused. I don’t remember anything at all of the abuse, but it has an enormous effect on my behavior and it’s the cause of most of my problems today!”
"Muh mental health" - everyone since 2010s.
some people go overboard with that shit, but it's better than those "muh rage", "muh drinking problem" for those who don't handle their mental health.
Kevin is just a professional victim.
Well, at least this would explain why Kevin never seemed to devolop past a middle schooler whos only interest was getting laid and making jokes about it
Oh yeah and even as a daily stoner for years that man still smoked too much
Like you have endless money from hollywood for awhile and you went with the cheapest drug so it went on for years and eventually it dried up or it was a mental break. Like even as much as i love smoking ill still take breaks if im not feeling the same high and he absolutely seems like the person thatd just keep smoking if they feel they arent getting the same buzz
Kevin Smith has the worst fashion sense
No shit
I really can't feel any symphony for the guy based on his actions the last 4 or 5 years and I wouldn't doubt that he's lying about some of it.
Sounds like a load of attention seeking garbage to me. Dude has been on the decline for years, and this is his grab at seeking attention.
And please, don't tell me he hasn't been that way. He was making a side hustle out of cry-reaction to every damn thing under the sun for the last decade.
