What I love about Hysteria is its story. The band refusing to replace Rick, sacrificing four years of growth and fame to wait for him… that’s something special that you just don’t hear about often.
I also find Adrenalize very underrated.

Great video Brendon. Happy to see the self titled album high on your list at No.5. Definitely one of their strongest for over 20 years. Off course it could be just my ears, but the guitar intro of 'Let's Go' reminds me of the guitar riff from 'Pour Some Sugar On Me'

I’m sure that’s what they were trying to create. It is a little on the nose and too much like it. I prefer the song Dangerous which has that classic feel but sounds unique and not like another song.

Hey Brendon! Got ya. Probably Adrenalize sounds a bit too much polished to me. Retroactive is an outstanding compilation, but a bit too much different versions of miss you in a heartbeat and two steps behind. And yeah, they made the covers their own. Highlight: The Faces classic Stay with me w/ Phil Collen singing. The album rocks!

What a great video about my favourite band. Interesting comments about each record. My ranking of the albums goes as follows:
    12. X (there are some great songs on it and I do like the record but it is my least favourite of theirs)
    11. Yeah! (great selections of songs, great interpretations)
    10. Songs from the sparkle lounge (I like Go and the Beatle-esque Love)
    9. Def Leppard (a return to form indeed)
    8. Slang (I didn't quite like it when it came out, but I think it's a very good album with a different feel to all the other records)
    7. On through the night (I love going back to this album. Sounds so young and fresh)
    6. Retro active (Desert song has to be one of the best songs this band has ever written)
    5. Euphoria (return to their classic sound, love it)
    4. High'n'dry (brilliant hard'n'heavy, so many memorable songs)
    3. Pyromania (fabulous record that sounded so original at the time. Put Def Leppard in a class of their own where they are to this day)
    2. Adrenalize (my number two favourite album of all time)
    1. Hysteria (my number one favourite album of all time)

@@BrendonSnyder Awesome. Me too. Pyromania was my first LP as a kid-I think I rank it highest for that reason. Perhaps why for you, it's Hysteria. Something about nostalgia. But, Hysteria is truly something-bridging the gap between pop rock and rock perfectly, I think.

I have every album except “on through the night”. My thought on Hysteria while it is a great album I don’t think it’s worthy of the number one spot, IMO. So I’ll rank my Def Leppard albums:
    12. On through the night (I don’t know the album so it’s on the bottom)
    11. Yeah (although it’s a great album, it’s a covers album)
    10. Euphoria (Somewhat return to form musically )
    09. Songs from the Sparkle Lounge
    08. Def Leppard (definitely a fav of mine)
    07. X (again Def Leppard doing their best with newer sound)
06 Slang ( definitely a new sound for the band change of direction and I enjoy that)
    05. Hysteria ( it has all the hits and sometimes overplayed “ Pour Some Sugar On Me” if I don’t hear that song again I’d be happy)
    04. Pyromania ( don’t know this album too well however older albums seem to move away from peoples ears once a new album drops)
    03. Adrenalize (I believe this was my first cd I bought of Def Leppard. Overall it continues without Steve Clark however his spirit is still in the band Phil Collin once said in an interview. Solid Songs.)
    02. Retro Active ( No matter what Def Leppard release it turns out great. Highlight of this album for me: the 🎹 piano version of “Miss you in a Heartbeat” and Fractured love to me is my favorite song on the album.)
    01. High ‘n’ Dry (first time I heard this album it “blew my mind” and this became my #1 album overall.)
I’m sorry I took up so much space for my comment. But I really enjoy these type videos. ✌🏻✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️ out of 5

Desert Song and Fractured Love are so good they could have easily slipped into Hysteria! So many good songs from the Hysteria sessions.. Tear it Down, Ring of Fire, Ride into the sun, I wanna be your hero... geez they were on fire back then.

Great ranking Brendon I more or less agree with your positioning except I have not heard some of the albums lower on your list such as "songs from the sparkle" and "X" because they just didn't appeal and I probably like the pre-Hysteria period a little more than you. I remember the Def Leppard EP coming out, I loved that, I know these songs appeared later on "On through the night" but it was a special period for me being a teenager in 1979 and hearing this music as it appeared and was reviewed in Sounds. I like that earlier raw sound. I also like Joe Elliots support of my favourite up and coming band The Warning.

I grew up with the band starting with Pyromania so that sound is what I associate most with the band. But I’m sure if I grew up starting with their first album I’d probably have a different opinion.

Another great look at a classic band. I did shy away from them in their later years (from Slang to present), so I can't really judge more recent albums fairly. Perhaps I should give the s/t album a listen soon. Both Pyromania and Hysteria are in my Top 20 HR/HM albums of all time (with a slightly higher edge to Pyromania); no duds on either. The only recent song I heard that was a return to form was the live version of "Undefeated" from "Viva Hysteria!" (the studio cut on "Mirror Ball" is far less energetic in comparison).

Interesting ranking Brendon. Thanks for ranking the albums. Everyone hears albums differently. I agree with the bottom three In your rankings. Here’s my ranking and a reason why for each album.
    12. X ( def lepard trying to go pop and it just didn’t work)
    11. Slang (props for trying something different, but they were following the trends rather than making them by this point)
    10. Yeah ( good choice of songs for a covers album, but I just don’t think highly of most covers albums)
    9. Euphoria ( promises does rock, but the rest of the album is a mixed bag, paper sun kills as well)
    8. Def Lepard S/T ( good try at returning to form, a few really well done songs that sound like something off of hysteria or adrenaline, but overall just misses the mark)
    7. Songs from the Sparkle Lounge( rocking tunes and a very fun album, minus nine lives)
    6. Adrenalize ( it is a really good album but the formula is wearing a bit thin here, but overall fun listen)
    5. On through the night ( raw and adolescent but fun and ambitious, the songwriting is not great yet, but you can see the makings of something great)
    4. Retroactive ( man I really love this album, and I agree that fractured love is amazing, these songs just had a fresh feel to them and after adrenalize this was most welcome)
    3. Hysteria( big, bold, overproduced to the maxx, but fun. I don’t need to hear PSSOM ever again but there are some good deep cuts on here, gods of war is killer)
    2. High and Dry ( raw and energetic but also refined and technical, it is a pure rock album and the songs are just that good)
    1. Pyromania ( amping up everything I said about high and dry, mutt Lange hasn’t overproduced too much on this, and the sound is still very organic and melodic. Just a perfect rock album in my opinion).

Hey, Brendon... What's up, me rock music wingman! .... Rick Allen's drumming is absolutely incredible on those first four albums(very underrated kit man) ..... Thunderous is probably the best way to describe his work ..... It's funny, the second side of Hysteria is still what gets me going!.... I mean Gods Of War, Run Riot, etc. are terrific tunes in their own right, A-sides for most other bands..... Is Hysteria the best song they ever wrote? (I often ponder that Q!).... All taken, an interesting ranking by you....If you never saw it, Def Leppard once shared the stage with Taylor Swift and it was really good!(You Tube available)....Take Care, Ghostrider Rick

I just listened to the song "Nine Lives" that they did with Tim McGraw. To be honest, it doesn't sound half bad. In fact, it sounds pretty darn good. Def Leppard and Tim McGraw actually sound good together. Even though, when I first heard this song I was wondering "Who is that singing at the beginning? It's definitely not Joe Elliott". My opinion is that they never came close to On Through The Night & High n' Dry. They were a straight hard rock band and those albums are great. Pyromania was still heavy but you can hear the pop creeping in but after that they became a pop-rock band and they lost me. Pour Some Sugar On Me is like nails on a chalkboard to my ears. But you still did a great review, keep up the great work.

My sentiments exactly. Love the first two records. When 'Pyromania' came out I though it sounded very polished. Jumped off the Leppard train as soon as I heard 'Hysteria'. Could not believe it was the same band that wrote such classics as 'Rock Brigade', 'Wasted', 'Overture ' etc.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 роки тому

The thing is the band was never trying to replicate those albums. In fact they will tell you that they didn’t think their sound was being captured on those two albums. So why you make not like what they did after, Def Leppard feels the later stuff is more who they are.

I could tell before you even got up to number two that you were gonna put Hysteria ahead of Pyromania, especially with you placing High and Dry as low as 7th, which made me almost skip the remainder of the video. I'm not sure how Pyromania is 2 and High and Dry is 5 slots behind it when it's the closet album to Pyromania they recorded and a clear bridge between the sound of On Through the Night and Pyromania. As for Hysteria, I'm happy it was huge and I waited for it for 4 years from age 13 to 17 and then another year for it to really take off, but ultimately, it's a casual fan's favorite Leppard album and I'm convinced that many avid fans have just fooled themselves into believing that because it was so massive and embraced by the mainstream that it must be the best. When you first played Hysteria, did you think it was better than Pyromania or did it grow on you? It grew on me over a few months to where I thought it was a good album but it never came close to touching Pyromania. And Hysteria didn't change things, that was Pyromania, which ushered in the Pop/Metal of the 80s and everyone tried to make their own Pyromania. Hysteria was unique too, no doubt, but no one really tried to copy it. Maybe because it was such a huge budget album no one wanted to try.

It’s a tough call to rank Leppard’s albums; so many of them are almost perfect commercial polished hard rock records. My list would differ from yours Brendon in that I think high and Dry is possibly my favourite (great songs and production pushing the band to its limits, and yet retaining the rough-edge feel of the NWOBHM from which Leppard came). I think Slang would also be in my top 5. Impossible to differentiate between Hysteria and Pyromania. Hysteria probably gets position 2 solely on the back of the perfection of Animal. The other slot in my top 5 would go to the eponymous Def Leppard album for the same reasons you so eloquently put. My only gripe about that album is that it’s too long. If they lost 4 songs it would be up there with the classics in my opinion.

Interesting band, for sure. I find I have a real love/hate relationship with them. Unfortunately the hate comes in at Hysteria and everything after. I know they kind of had to approach things differently after Rick Allen had his accident and I I find it quite admirable that they were loyal enough to continue to stick with him and work around his limitations, but I don’t understand why they felt they had to gravitate so far towards the Pop side of things, rather than the NWOBHM approach that they started with. Oh well, we’ll always have the early stuff. I love the first three.

    Top 3 for me;
    Hysteria
    Pyromania
    Slang
Slang is so criminally under rated, and for me Adrenalize was dreadful other than a couple of tracks, songs like Let's Get Rocked, Make Love Like A Man, I Wanna Touch You just make me cringe, the only redeemable tracks for me being White Lightning & Stand Up (Kick Love Into Motion)
In the UK (maybe worldwide) to promote the Retro-Active album they released the single When Love & Hate Collide, which was fantastic, and after seeing them on the Adrenalize tour, and hearing Collen and Campbell trade guitar licks, I thought their next and first studio album with Campbell was going to be a melodic rock masterpiece, and maybe it would have been if grunge did not come along.
But Slang is what we got, and for me it was really good, perfectly sat in the pocket of melody and maturity, was just a more honest and down to earth offering, anyway... just my opinion.

Def Leppard should’ve been and remained the greatest rock band in the world but completely dropped the ball beginning with a number of tracks on Hysteria. There’s a phrase used in rock and metal ‘ stay in your lane ‘ which the Lepps imo should’ve done . Personally I think they should have gone for heavy and more progressive instead of some of the terrible pop they churned out . That said most of their post Hysteria albums had great moments but not enough of them . Brendon you’re right about Paper Sun being good and what about Pearl of Euphoria from Slang. I remember first hearing Let it go from High and Dry and thinking’ this is what we need ‘ but time seemed to kill their youthful fire . I’ve always grouped Def Leppard and Bon Jovi together as bands with similar careers. Huge in the 80’s with landmark albums. A dip in the 90’s with both coming back around 1999-2000. Def Leppard in front of High and Dry and On Through The NIght? Really?
I wouldn’t even put it in front of Euphoria and Songs From The Sparkle Lounge. It begins ok enough but after that the second half it’s mostly boring in my opinion. It’s overrated for mine. I like where you put Adrenalize though, I’ve long thought that’s their most underrated album along with Sparkle Lounge which rocks.

I agree, those two albums are classics. Especially High and Dry. I didn’t think their last album was anything special either, apart from the singles it didn’t even really sound like Def Leppard. I even prefer Slang

Most people either like hysteria or hate it, i personally hate it for the simple reason they jumped on hair metal bandwagon - a lot of the band werent very good looking to b considersd 'poseurs' anyway, i much prefer pyromania and high n dry - but im not their biggest fan

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 роки тому

I’m a straight guy but I have to disagree, I think the guys in Def Leppard all looked good and it’s what helped them in the 80’s when looks mattered. Regardless, it’s cool if you don’t like the album. To each his own.

I just couldn’t get past the drum machine sounds on Back In Your Face and the clear mimicry of Pour Some Sugar On Me for several of the tracks. Don’t get me wrong I still like the album.

For the exception both songs open with drums and a guitar riff, there is nothing similar between those two songs. If there was then every song that starts with drums and guitar would be considered a rip off.

Def Leppard put out 3 amazing albums and then sold out. Nothing but bubblegum pop garbage after that with an occasional decent song here and there. Best song on Hysteria is Gods of War, everything else is bubblegum crap and I certainly NEVER need to hear Pour Some Sugar on Me again!
