    Awe you are a fabulous hen owner. They are some of the best looked after hens I've seen. I'm hoping to get a few hens in the next few months, so currently devouring all the info I can find to ensure I'll have healthy and equally important happy hens. My autistic son adores hens, his paternal grandmother keeps quite a few hens and my son is often found plonked on the ground with hens on his lap and others snuggling into him. It's the most amazing sight to behold. He is an 8 year old hen whisper lol...so the hens are actually very therapeutic and help calm him after a melt down... With the benefits of free range eggs.
    Great little video... Thank you

    Great video, thanks. I’m a new chicken owner, and I’m devouring information and knowledge. My coop was just built, and I’m so happy to learn about the wand. Lol. I have 5 hens and I’ve become obsessed with them. I got them when they were only a week old, so it has been quite a journey. No eggs yet, but we are ready!

    What a great video. I am getting baby chicks in July and I have just ordered an extra large coop and covered run combo. The run is 22 ft. I hope that is large enough because I cannot let my chickens free range with loose dogs in the neighborhood and I have seen a hawk perched in my backyard trees on different occasions. We might add an additional large fenced in area and cover it with bird netting next year. But I would never let them out without supervision. I look forward to watching more of your chicken videos.

    The way i clean my chicken run: first sieve potting soil (WITH NO ADDED FERTILIZER) so it gets all of the bark and rocks out which makes it SUPER SOFT. then, every morning i just scoop hand fulls of bedding into the sieve and shake it so it just leaves the food scraps, poop and grain in it. Once a month i take out all of the soil and replace it with new soil and it works amazingly! Btw i always sieve the run in the morning before the chickens have come out because while they were sleeping, the poop would have hardened and that will make it alot easier everyday. I reccomend you try it because it is a natural substrate and it is so easy to clean.

    Great video. I have runs & coops being set up at the moment, & eggs in the incubator, so hoping to see little Silkie chicks in around 20 days time. I also have a 9 week old silkie rooster coming in a few days. Hoping I enjoy my chickens as much as you do yours. I'm in New Zealand, so we don't have foxes, racoons, snakes, etc here, thankfully, but I will still being tucking them into bed at night, & securing the coop. Thanks for doing this video.

    I’m glad that I’m not the only one that uses a “chicken wand”...lol. My want is actually a red light weight garden fencing pole about 3 to 4 feet long. I never touch me hens with it. I use it like a Shepard’s staff and direct their path that they should go. And I am calling out for them because they know my voice as well.

    Hi. My friend needs a loving home for her three chickens. We have a coop and everything but: 1) do they make alot (like loads) of noise or are they normally quiet? 2) Where can I buy cheap food? 3) How often will they lay eggs? 4) Can I have three or will they fight? 5) Do they get along with Guinea pigs? I have a little G-piggy and we are planning on letting the chickens free once every week but my g-pug is freerange and roams the garden :D

    • @connordilworth64
      @connordilworth64 8 років тому +3

      Team Bartlett
      I'm going to answer your questions:
      Roosters only make a lot of noise but hens, you don't have to worry about. Go to tractor supply and they have all kinds of feeds including a variety of chicken feeds. Chickens don't normally fight. And I would watch your Guinea pig though because the chickens might peck at the Guinea pig, and injure it. Hopefully this helps.

    • @connordilworth64
      @connordilworth64 8 років тому +2

      Team Bartlett Oh and I forgot to tell you that the hens might squawk whenever they lay eggs, which is normal.

    • @kellyemb12
      @kellyemb12 7 років тому +2

      Team Bartlett is right. Roosters are the noisy ones. Some hens can cluck from time to time but it doesn't bother me. they put themselves to bed before the sun sets and they are very quiet then. I buy an organic, GMO free pellet from my local feed store, of course that will be more expensive but they have other options as well. You can order it online if you wish too. They love meal worm snacks and chicken scratch. Of course they wouldn't say no to a earth worm, snail, or insect. Chickens the most eggs on the longest days. Each breed will lay at a different rate so if you want lots of eggs a leghorn for a white egg or a Road Island Red for a brown egg are good layers. I write growing articles for a magazine in Malibu called Westlake Malibu Lifestyle and my last article was all about raising chickens. I will be posting it on my Facebook soon so you can get information there. Thanks for all you questions, I hope this helps.

    • @kellyemb12
      @kellyemb12 7 років тому +1

      Once you get your coop and run up chickens are really quite easy to take care of. If you live in an area where you don't have many predators you can let them roam around all day if you have a large enough property and you have fences that keep you chickens out of your neighbors yard. They will put themselves to bed because they don't see well once the sun starts to set. But research because some hens do better in a coop run environment and some love to forge around. I hope you get them because they are the sweetest things and each breed has their own personality. good luck

      Kelly Emberg,
      I want to let my chickens forage (chickens love digging in the compost heap for bugs and whatnot), but we have hawks and other raptors here. Pretty much any California location will have hawks, have you ever had an issue with them? We live in a rather common tract on edge of larger cities, but the whole development is against wild land on two sides. I've heard coyotes late at night, and have heard that they follow backyard fences for as far as they go, looking for the perfect meal. Also have Owls of all sizes, and skunks, 'possums, and raccoons visit our yard often, in the middle of the night. (we've seen 'em on the security cameras--I do not empty the trash after dark if i can help it!)
      I like the idea of letting the chooks wander around, and the night visitors don't worry me, but I saw a hawk snatch a songbird out of a small tree in our yard a few years ago, and I've been worried about it ever since.
      Any advice for this situation? Your place is very nice, but that gully/canyon back there is quite worrisome!

    • @youresoakinginit2113

      Stratton Tidwell,
      Most experienced chicken moms n dads advise keeping younger chickies separated from the main "herd"-- but visible to each other through a wire fence -- so they can get used to each other. This is probably true of older chix who join the family, too, but the originals might be more likely to hassle the young'ns and that sets up a self perpetuating situation, and the youngs will learn to be bullies, thinking (if chickens think, LoL) they have to fight to survive.

    She didn't tell you but PLEASE don't use cedar chips in you coop it will kill you chickens and don't have to have oyster shell it's just a treat or for calcium deficient hens and don't add it to your feed the feed , it has all it needs and they will just scratch all the feed out,also as long as you use a all in one wormer you don't absolutely have to have that stuff she puts down but if you do notice mites you can use sieving dust or lime it does the same thing and is a lot cheaper

    • @youresoakinginit2113
      @youresoakinginit2113 5 років тому

      tannenbaum,
      I was thinking the same, but more along the lines of the dust being kicked up while raking the poops and stuff out. Since I found out about Deep Litter, thats what I plan to do. If I'm understanding it right, you dont need to pick up the poops, you just keep covering with additional shallow layers of litter (HEMP litter is known to eliminate odor, and some people use PDZ which also prevents the stinkies that draw flies; stink and flies are going to get complaints from neighbors, so that's my main objective.) Deep litter is cleaned out completely, saving a bit to return a 4" layer of the old stuff to start a new batch, which is then composted and used on your flowers and veggie gardens.
      Anyway, I've only heard that dust kicked up from litter is bad for [wo]man and beast. The chickens can get some kind of lung infection if breathing in the desiccated waste, and I'm afraid to ask what it does to humans but it doesn't seem like a good idea. I dont think the DE has an effect on keeping the chix from bad effects of breathing in waste, but, as Kelly says in the video, it's great for worming, getting rid of mites and other critters. Some people make their chickens dust baths out of DE, either 100% de or mixing in with local soil. Lots of people put DE in the feed, and claim it keeps worms and such in check.

    Great but it has put me off. Seems like a full time job and a lot of initial expense. I wonder what my Vietnamese neighbours would make of her. The chickens in my neighbourhood are kept in, they are noisy and - in mot cases - their home stinks. Mind you, this town sucks - the villages are a different matter .

      s j f,
      Stink-free chickens are possible!! Use either Hemp Bedding/Litter or look into PDZ. Either of them keep away flies, because the flies are not attracted, cos no smell! The Hemp requires a certain type for chickens, they have a coarser one for horse stalls (which do not stink!), another size for cats, and even smaller (?) for little things like guinea pigs and the like.
      Same with PDZ, if I'm not mistaken, different size grades for large/small animals. You should tell your neighbor (gently) that you have a "situation", and suggest these products to her.
      As for the noise... does she have a rooster? They are generally not allowed even in areas allowing BYCs, because they are SO noisy. Of course that may be a way for her to make money, selling baby chicks. She may not know that several fertile eggs come with only one encounter with the rooster... the hen can lay fertile eggs over a two to three week period. Maybe she could put the rooster on a ranch nearby, and just bring a couple hens over to the rooster every few weeks.

      PS: Curious, where do you live? Hope it isnt too bad! The "villages" part piqued my curiosity...

    They like to stand in water for cooling. As such, your raised nipple water feeder is BS. and other things you do don't really do them any real good, but make the resulting eggs too expensive to bother doing it.

      I guess it depends on where you live. I use to leave water in their coop because one of my hens in particular liked to stand in the water but she got infection on her foot and my vet told me to take the water out because it was causing the infection. So I now have lots of water that is attached to the run as well at the hanging water bucket with nipples. They like to drink from both so I don't know what you are talking about that it is BS. I didn't say my coop was inexpensive. I just wanted to share some simple ideas about raising hens. They are my pets and the up side is I get eggs from them as well. It depends on why you want hens in the first place. BTW that raised water feeder was inexpensive.
