-In general, gorillas live 35 years in the wild. In captivity they get better food, medical care and have no predators. Life expectancy can range from 50-60 years.
GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your old cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). 80% of the world’s Coltan is mined in central Africa, which is wild gorilla habitat. Forests are being strip mined for this highly sought after mineral, with illegal mining even taking place in protected gorilla areas. BUT! Coltan is reusable! Clear out that old cell phone drawer! Our hope is, that the more and more electronic devices are recycled, this can slow demand for new Coltan to be mined in Africa.
Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.
Kayembe was the first zoo born gorilla at the Cleveland Zoo.
Kunda is the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
Jameela is the first baby gorilla born via c-section at the Fort Worth Zoo.
Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, N'neka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, Kunda 7/19/23, and Jameela 1/5/24.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

My favorite thing was how Freddie kept on eating. Guess you don't get to be her age by sweating the small stuff. And Mokolo is just an awesome troop leader. Especially when we remember how long he was among the guy gorillas without a 'teacher', as it were. Love this boy.

Kayembe is a precious little toddler. Jameela is a sweet little infant. Freddy is a great mother. May they all be safe, healthy and happy forever and forever. May the other gorillas be just as blessed. Our world would be very sad and empty if these precious animals were not around. I love all animals.

Morning Larry - I am always excited to see what you have captured and are about to give to us with each new video. When I think back to when I heard of this fragile c-section baby in Houston, to know her real Mom then was refusing her and then praying the move to Cleveland Zoo to a surrogate, in the hopes tiny Jameela might be accepted, only to hear that Freddy, without any hesitation took on the Mom role, with no less love and care than if she had actually carried and given birth to Jameela herself, warms my heart and brightens my days every single morning I am greeted with a new video from you. This has been such a special and touching journey. Thanks Larry - I’m not sure you realize just how much your videos are honestly a wonderful start to a morning!

True. She gets bullied by N'Neka and Kebi. Tusa is at the low end of the troup. My guess over that is because either Tusa has no offspring from Mokolo, or they are jealous of her that she can be a breeding mate for him. This happened to Genki when she was sent to Ueno Zoo from Kyoto City Zoo, where she was born. She became so anxious from the bullying that she bit off one of her fingers at the knuckles, and pulled out a little bit of fur. Things are tough for Tusa. I saw a video of Tusa giving off signals to Mokolo. She would slowly approach him, and another time. Tusa tried to assume the position under Mokolo, but in each of those times, naughty Kayembe interrupted the mating ritual. He wanted to play. 😂❤
I was wondering if Tusa would calm down if she had a baby. She just seems so distressed. She has a special place in my heart.❤

Kebi and Freddie are the best mama gorillas. Jameela is learning from the best! Mokolo is such a gentle giant. It is amazing how he stops the drama between the females so quickly. I wonder why anyone would be at odds with Freddie. She is the sweetest mama gorilla, always minding her own business.

I'm very impressed with the way the Silverback kept them all in line with minimal intervention. He didn't have to do much and that's the sign of a great Silverback.. a great leader. I also noticed that little Jameela is getting more fur around her face and Kayembe seems to like hanging out near Dad. Perhaps learning how to be a future Silverback. I can't get over how great Mokolo is with his family. I wish I lived closer to the Zoo because I really want to see them growing up together.

This is also probably why Kebi and Freddie both keep their distance from the two feisty ladies, and 12:25 hang out with one another instead. 😂 Oh yes! Now I understand clearly. 13:40 Mokolo: 🤔 What is wrong with my lady wives today? Me: You have your hands full Mokolo 😘 you handsome hunky fella. 14:43 Meanwhile Jameela is thriving and learning how to live in a troop (and all the drama that comes along with it 😆). Poor Tusa. Being raised by humans certainly didn't do her any favors. Nneka be straight tripping for no reason! Freddy eshews all the drama. She just keeps to herself and protects those babies. Kayembe knows where he's safest!

Jameela seems a bit wary of Kayembe since the day he got too rough. Kayembe thinks he's a big guy, until there's a scuffle. Then he runs to Freddy. It looks like Freddy is starting to encourage him to be less dependent on her. Amazing video as always. ❤

I pray Freddie will be around for many more years to rear the baby. Since Nene has taken a turn for the worse I worry. They are close in age. Hopefully with raising the baby F will have a strong will to live and be around. I pray for her good health- and for Nene ❤️🙏

She knows that she’s safe with Freddy, no matter what is going on.❤ I wonder what dreams are going through Jameela’s little head at 12:05? Hopefully, sweet ones.🥰 I don’t think N’Neka likes being the third-ranking female (after Freddy and Kebi Moyo) - I guess that’s why she takes it out on poor Tusa, and even occasionally has a sneaky swipe at Freddy and Kebi as well! I can't wait for all the babies to play together. I wish Tuni could go live with that couple who has gorilla's in their home/sanctuary. It not her fault she was raised with humans. There are certain acceptions, and this might be one of them if she can't ever acclimate. But in all likelihood, it will never happen.

Larry, I just saw a video that showed two zookeepers stuck inside a gorilla enclosure with a silverback at the Fort Worth Zoo.
The silverback was Elmo, who is Jameela's dad.
Yes, that was news from 6 months ago. Lucky keepers.
I hope Mokolo is well. He seemed kind of down to me!
