I collected some plants and had no bags nor press so I walked to a gas station and bought gum, which came with a bag to hold the gum and the plants, and the dirt I swept off the cashier's counter 😬👍
Yesss you have the spreadsheet still right? Do you need to use the drying oven? Just bring the plants by as soon as you can so we can dry them!

Do you number your journals and keep a separate index of the specimens corresponding to the journal?

I'm sorry, that didn't answer your question. What you can do is say what collection numbers are in the journal. Some people do keep a table of contents, but you end up with a LOT of specimens, so this becomes cumbersome. Spreadsheets are one way of dealing with this issue.
