- Pharmacist Layne talks hormone levels after a hysterectomy. He talks specifically about estradiol and some possible complications that may arise if levels aren't maintained.
Pharmacist Layne is in process of creating a hormone therapy course which will talk about all different aspects of hormones including: safety, reading labs, optimal levels, adverse effects, finding the right prescriber, insurance, etc... If you're interested in receiving course updates, subscribe at the link below. Thanks for watching!

Don’t understand why he doesn’t have tons of followers because he’s so on point it’s crazy. It’s been 3 yrs and I had no idea this would happen to me.
Thank you Daughter! Keep watching our videos and maybe my followers will grow. And there was no pun whatsoever intended there.
Thank you!!!!!! NO warning about this before or after op!!!! Disgraceful. Having an absolute nightmare
Thank you for your comment. Let us know if we can help you find a hormone therapy practitioner! And best wishes!
Very helpful video. The best one I've watched yet, and it's helped me during my deliberations.
Just had my ovaries removed (hysterectomy happened years ago) to try to treat menstrual psychosis. After 43 hospitalizations, I don't care about skin or hair- just hoping to get off the psych rollercoaster. I'd love a video specifically about HRT and mental health.
Girl, I feel you...my appointment is 8/5, same reason but did it help you become more mentally stable?
I had A full hysterectomy 7 weeks ago because of cancer cells I'm 46 and having urine incontinence, night and day sweats loss of weight my doctor tod me anything, thank you for this 👍
I have been taking hormone therapy I love this doctor this is the first time I’ve heard a doctor speak the truth
Well, thank you, but you still haven't heard a doctor speak the truth. I am a pharmacist. :-)
I can definitely relate! I had womb cancer, and had everything removed. Because it was oestrogenic, I can't have any Hormonal replacement therapy, or cream. I wasn't told about any of this either - they just said that I would go into 'instant menopause ', and would have to manage by myself. All of these additional risks are a list of things I could now get. Nobody has asked how I'm doing with this - you are literally just left to discover it yourself. Weigh gain from hormonal shock is another one.
My doctor left me without any estrogen replacement after total hysterectomy/oopherectomy age 47, perimenopausal . I just assumed I would go home from the hospital with an Rx. Nope. So I thought, “Ok we’ll, he’s the doctor. He knows best. I guess for whatever reason I’m not supposed to be on ERT.” Thus began my decent straight into the pits of hell (literally within 72 of getting home from the hospital.) Called the office and they acted like I was bothering them by asking for an Rx for ERT. Needless to say I have a new doctor.
Thanks for sharing that Natalie. I hope you are happy with your new doctor. If not, get in touch with us and we'll connect you with someone else. Demand what's yours! There is a pathetic lack of education out there on hormones and it is driven by the enemies of compounding pharmacies. Now who would that be?? It is deplorable and violates all the ethics of medicine.
I would love the personal phone number of the senior resident and doctor!
When the surgery follow up happens they should be assessing the symptoms and giving a script to help.
Right? Care to share something about your experience?
My hair has been falling off and my entire life on hold due to persistent bleeding. If this procedure will improve my life then i will have it.
Let us know the area you live in and we'll do our best to find you a practitioner!
Dr. I have brca2 and already had breast cancer. I had a double mastectomy. I have a 20% chance of ovarian cancer. I'm so afraid of getting my ovaries removed. I'm 41 and on tamoxifen (for cancer reoccurence prevention). I have horrible side effects from the tamoxifen. I'm afraid I'll go completely crazy with surgical menopause and tamoxifen (or an aromatase inhibitor). I need advice
I had a radical hysterectomy in 2017, I have had one ovary since 2013, I’m having hot flashes, very depressed. It’s hard to find info for my case. I need help
Email me at layne@mtolympusrx.com. Tell me where you live and I'll do my best to set you up with someone who can help.
Hi, I had total hysterectomy a little over a year ago. I had what my obgyn Dr called stage 4 endometriosis, so he had to remove both my ovaries as well. He then put me on estrogen 2 weeks post op, and I developed blood clots in both my lungs, and so I'm not on the pills (had to take blood thinners for a few months) he then put me on the estrodoial patches after a few months while I was still taking the blood thinners, but sent me to a blood Dr for opinion, and that Dr said to get off the patches and not be on any hormone medicine due to the clots. There was blood work done and I don't have a clotting issue, so it could have been caused by the surgery (it was open surgery) and or estrodoial. I feel exhausted by the emotional rollercoaster I deal with internally, the hot flashes are not fun and lack of sleep and energy level. (I'm in my late 30s) I miss having my ovaries. I'm not sure what my next step is, and I feel discouraged to keep going to my Dr. I want to look for a new Dr but I don't know where to begin, do I need to see a specialist?
Hi Daniela. Your case makes me sad and frustrated. Yes, you need to see a specialist. A hormone specialist (who is not necessarily an endocrinologist). I can help you find on in your area. The truth is, it is not likely the oral estradiol even caused your blood clots, but clots in the lungs are scary, so I don't blame them for stopping the oral estradiol. Going to the patches was an acceptable alternative. The literature indicates that transdermal (topical) estradiol brings no increased risk of clotting whatsoever. Especially since you have ruled out a clotting disorder. Most clots are caused by surgical manipulation and disruption of the tissues of the body and body cavities followed by protracted lying flat on your back with little mobility, or prolonged sitting--like long plane flights. Estradiol is easy to blame though, because then it's not the surgeon's fault. There's a lot of CYA in medicine that doesn't serve the patient first and foremost. No one should expect you to do without estradiol for the rest of your life. The negative effects of estrogen deprivation far exceed any concerns about clots. Of course you miss your ovaries! They were your chief source of estrogen. Denying you estrogen is malpractice. Email me at layne@mtolympusrx.com and let's get you in touch with an experienced hormone therapy practitioner!
What about Breast cancer and Endometrial cancer both caused by a Estrogen? You can’t do hormone replacement therapy right without reoccurrence.
Am 55 had to have full hysterectomy...post op two months ... I am not coping with emotions .. have no ovaries to produce hormones....am struggling with all this ..what do I do
What city do you live in? I will see if I can locate a practitioner nearby.
What do you recommend for someone with 2 large fibroids . My dr wants to remove my uterus. Thanks
Fibroids are quite common, probably THE most common cause of stubborn bleeding. Fortunately they are almost always benign and don't lead to cancer, but that bleeding scares people, even doctors. Because they're worried it might be coming from a thickening of the uterine wall, which is potentially serious and necessitates a biopsy. That can portend cancer. So they often want to just remove the uterus and avoid the whole possibility. But once cancer is ruled out, it's what we call non-pathological bleeding. And these days, fibroids can be treated non-invasively through vaginal access, which preserves the uterus. You might search vascular surgeons for someone who does those. If you agree to a hysterectomy, whatever you do, don't let them take out your ovaries unless there's good reason.
I had a full hysterectomy 4 years ago due to cervical cancer, I had just turned 43. When my mother asked my doctor will she be on hormones, he said no because of my grandmother having breast cancer. That was all that was said about it, no pros and cons so I could decide what I wanted to do! And now 4 years later and I am starting not to recognize my face or body I am mad about this! I am going to start on hormones regardless but when I do will the effects of not for 4 years improve once I do? Thanks for a reply.
Hi Kamie, I could refer you to dozens of practitioners that would take issue with your doctor's summation of your suitability for hormone replacement. Based purely on a family history of breast cancer, I think it's unreasonable to deprive you of all the benefits of hormones forever, full stop. The question is how soon after your cervical cancer is it safe to start. Most of the practitioners I deal with would say 3-5 years.
😢 Doctors do not care about us, right I am going insane after my hysterectomy 😢
@Araceli Serrato it's ok me too try to
Add also stuff that has natural phytoestrogens I found that peas help soy if you can estradiol im on 1 mg I hope I don't have a stroke but what can you do
I seem to be having all this and still only have one ovary. Should I use hormone replacement with one ovary?
What would be your recommendation for surgical menopause caused by rampant endometriosis? Estrogen HRT would cause the same issues as before the surgical menopause, no?
Endometriosis can be caused by many different reasons. One of them is too much estrogen and not enough progesterone. If you were to start HRT, I would recommend that we have labs done. You want your progesterone high enough so we are less likely to have this happen again. Kevin Witzenman PharmD.
I had hysterectomy and one ovary removed befor 4month and the level of estrogen increased to 450 so I am afraied from breast cancer what recommend to me please ?
What about just ONE OVARY REMOVED at age 49
I had a hysterectomy n 2013. Kept my right ovary. Had my right ovary removed April 2022 due to having breast cancer and the BRACA1 gene.
I am doing ok. Fatigue and some vaginal dryness. I have been doing pelvic floor exercises, health diet, supplements and very light exercise as of now until I am done with reconstruction. Would I benefit from hormone replacement?
If you just had breast cancer (BC), most practitioners will require you to go 5 years before restoring estradiol. Five years is considered a cure in BC. If it comes back it is considered a new cancer. Not sure how old you are. You look young. I certainly would not want my wife to go without hormones for the rest of her life. If you do, you can expect that dryness to continue and proceed to atrophy and urinary incontinence. Without estradiol, expect increased skin wrinkles of the face, chest, and hands, increased risk of heart disease and stroke, increased "fogginess" and fatigue, and a decreased interest in sex. Bone density falls precipitously without estradiol, and your risk of dementias and alzheimers is worse. Significantly worse. Sleep problems, mood swings, and anxiety often develop due to the loss of progesterone. Progesterone also causes apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells. So, it is protective. And without testosterone... loss of muscle mass (hangy under the arms), less strength and endurance, decreased sense of well-being, poor skin tone, decreased healing capacity, decreased libido, sexual performance and gratification, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, higher body fat, and more arthritis. There's more. So, would you benefit from hormone replacement? I've told you what the literature shows. You decide. -Pharmacist Layne

Hello from Albania🇦🇱. Looking for help i found this material on you tube. Please help. In February 2021 i got histectomia.
Now i have hot flashes( i dont want medications for this) but did this hot flashes cause some danger in my body? Im 45 years old. I dont have the ovary too.😔😔😔
You have hot flashes because you have very little useful estrogen now that your ovaries are gone. You don't want medications, but without getting some estradiol into your body, you WILL "cause some danger" in your body. You will age faster, continue with hot flashes (not dangerous, but miserable), get vaginal dryness, bone density problems, and increased risk of Alzheimers and heart disease, just to name a few.

I'm not a doctor, by the way. Pharmacist.
What if endometrial cancer is diagnosed and hysterectomy is what's offered is my concern cause then ya have all the other issues that arise from that procedure makes me wonder what is best to live with a uturus that over produces estrogen or what's been said that's my concern
The uterus is not a significant source of hormones, so it is not producing estrogen. It has estrogen receptors, but the estrogen flows from elsewhere in your body. The removal of your uterus, if it is cancerous, seems like a wise thing to do, but healthy ovaries should be preserved if possible.
Can you able to give hormonal support in India .if yes what is the procedure

Hi I’m so confused. I just spoke with my wonderful surgeon and she said progesterone is what will make me moody and have hair loss. I’m taking oral 1 mg estradiol/ had a partial hysterectomy. Have ovaries still. Bought progesterone cream based on some Utube advice but now I don’t know what to do:( please advise?
With respect, I disagree with your surgeon. In all my years in hormone therapy I have never seen a study nor heard of native human progesterone causing hair loss. In fact, we add it to a scalp solution to TREAT hair loss. And about the moodiness... progesterone is the calming, feel-good, anxiety reducing female hormone. Rarely a patient (maybe 1 in 1,000) will have a negative response. In nearly every woman, progesterone is all things good. And one of the most important things it does to improve quality of life is improve sleep. And good sleep raises all boats in the harbor, right? The benefits of progesterone are so vast, with essentially no downside, I think every woman should be on it with very few exceptions. But it must be bioidentical (native human) progesterone and not medroxyprogesterone (MPA) or some other modified, manufactured substitute. I wonder if MPA is what your doctor was referring to? If so, she's right. Never take that. It DOES have negative effects
What makes women moody is taking estrogen WITHOUT progesterone. They balance one another. And just because you no longer have a uterus doesn't mean you have no use nor need for progesterone. You have progesterone receptors in your bones, breasts, brain, uterus, and many others places. Abruptly removing it makes most women feel lousy.
I like that you are taking oral estradiol. It is also protective and essential throughout your life and orally is the most healthy way to take it.
We now know that estradiol and progesterone play preventive roles in disease processes. Their importance extends way beyond just female organs. BOTH OF THEM! Note, however, that men do not need nor should they take progesterone.

When your ovaries are removed your immediately POSTmenopausal, not menopausal. It's a complete shock to the body!

Hello, everyone! i had my totall hysterectomy last dec 16,2020 and my ob ask me to take HRT , i started taking it last night jan 22,2020. I just want to ask if how long will it take my HRT . Thanks for any reply.
Please be more specific. I'd love to offer some help, but don't understand your question.
Sorry, I omet some words accidentally. What I mean to say: How long I will take HRT pills? My ObGyne told me to take until I reached 60yrs old and I am just 47.
Started 2010 surgical menopause started HRT patch for menopause, symptoms. It’s been 9 years and I’ve weaned myself from 2 patches 2 times a week to 1 patch 2 times a week. Is this good or bad? I have cancer that is on maternal side (breast) also heart disease. I wanted to wean down becuz i always felt bloated sad my rings on my finger were tight. I wonder if i had to much estrogen. How long should people be on HRT after surgical menopause please help me help me. Thanks so much
Update everything is well. I've lost 13 pounds. I'm not bloating, I don't feel nearly as achy like joint pain. I've had some hot flashes and THEY SUCK!! BUT I put something cold on my neck or head take a few deep breaths an keep it movin. My sleep hasn't been to bad. Kinda feel like I got my life back on track. Still emotional, I'm not ashamed I cry everyone does.❤️
Hello LeeLas Mom. Thanks for watching my video. I just returned from a Hormone Therapy Medical Conference and had to share this with you. First, I hope you are still doing well and have kept your weight off. The literature is replete with evidence that estradiol DOES NOT cause cancer, whether you have a family history or not. It also does not increase recurrence in breast cancer patients. In fact, it is protective. So you should not be trying to "wean off" of it. The evidence shows that maintaining healthy levels of estradiol should be continued your whole life. You should find a practitioner who specializes in hormone therapy. I can help refer you if you tell me what city you are in. The evidence is also piling in about the importance of optimizing thyroid and progesterone.
