We ran into a problem with years of old mulch building up along the house. Keep it no higher than the water proofing along your foundation. Pine straw doesn't rot so don't lay pine straw against your foundation.
regading the end of the video, it's okay to build up soil against the brick?
I watch five videos that were like ten minutes and still couldn't figure why its important to keep the dirt away from the house when creating a garden bed in front of the house. great video straight to the point.

@@BudgetMadam in all the videos I've watched, not a single one has mentioned termites, yet this is an issue I had last year. The exterminator said to pull away all wood from next to the foundation. So this year I installed a French drain and created an embankment away from the foundation. I've yet to put rock next to the house, and because of the slope of both the embankment (steep) and slope from my neighbors yard, thinking riprap and then maybe planting some herbs that tolerate dry soil. Still trying to figure this out, and I've seen only one video that deals with a similar situation where they used all rock and no plants.

Okay, I'm confused. I watch one video that says you need to water your foundation (about 12 inches from the foundation) to prevent expanding/shrinking of the soil. Then I see videos like this that say you need to make sure you don't get water near your foundation. Don't get me wrong, I understand not wanting the water right up against your foundation. I'm just having trouble understanding how you can water the foundation AND ensure water stays away from it at the same time.

I think it depends on what type of soil you have.
Here in Texas is mostly clay soil, clay dries up and shrinks during the summer months and you need to keep it a bit moist that's why we water our foundation at least 3 feet from the foundation.
You want to keep the soil moist but not so moist that there is puddling/pooling of the water. Moist = Good. A lake of water = Bad.
