James calling Top Gear a sitcom is spot on and it's weird I never saw it that way before but it totally is. That blend of sitcom and genuine serious car show was something so special that I don't think anyone could replicate and it's why Top Gear basically collapsed without May, Hammond and Clarkson.
Top Gear Series 10 onwards barring a few good episodes and specials was a scripted clown show! Watch the old stuff he mentions, it was genuinely three blokes cocking about with genuine conversations and reactions! I don't think I've seen Clarkson talking in a genuinely normal voice for years and years. It's absolutely pathetic!
@@arjanpetersen it's not that controversial an opinion to be fair. it was still good but memorable moments were fewer and further between around 2010ish, they definitely started to seem less genuine more and more as time went on. They clinged on to the things that they thought made them famous too much. At the start they were a relatively relatable "group of mates" where one is more obsessed with just generally loud, exciting, powerfl cars (clarkson obviously), the other is a bit more on the side of dedicated sports cars (hammond love of porsches being a reccuring theme) and the third is the slightly more educated sounding one (just james being james) and they played to their strengths, made fun out of others weakness etc but i'd say by 2012 they'd cemented it down to simply: "hahahhhh jeremy dumb" "hurrr james slow and pedantic" "durr hammond smol cowardly american brummie"... I realised it when I noticed that while in early seasons I could "buy in" to whatever crazy challenge they set themselves, however pointless, by 2012 onwards i was getting to the end of challenge episodes thinking "uh... what was the point of all that?"
@@RWoody1995 I do agree with you to an extent. Their genuine selves is great in that old stuff, but maybe it would've peatered out sooner if they didn't evolve. They were given higher budgets as it became more popular, and it makes sense to use it. When you've got the best cars to rent, might as well put the cash into higher production. I agree with higher production it lost authenticity, but that happens with everything. There's a balance with production and authenticity, better production leads to better quality but less authenticity, worse production/budget leads to worse quality generally but higher authenticity. It happens with tv at times, it happens with music artists a lot, where the debut stuff is held in better regard than newer stuff. Basically as the production got better, they inevitably showed less authenticity. It's there, you can see it in each members side projects (our man, clarksons farm, drivetribe, etc), but top gear/tgt has raised the standard for themselves and those scripted high budget films for the car show are here to stay.

May’s suggestion that people think that they live in 1 large house with all their cars parked outside sounds like a freest idea for a special… Amazon, make it happen
Honestly watching the 3 of them have a sleepover would be funny as heck. That old TG episode where they spent the night in a caravan next to a train track and May described it as romantic while sleeping on the same bed as Hammond made me laugh so much.
My sons and I learned many things from Top Gear and the Grand Tour. If you have fun your job won't be boring. If you can find a job that allows you to act like a kid, even better. This is what we loved about TG and GT. Watching three guys acting like fools and loving it. We miss the shows and the antics that made us laugh and feel good. For Mr. May, I enjoy Oh Cook. It's fun and down-to-earth, and one can learn a thing or two. I'm waiting for Season 3. Well done sir.

I do agree, dont stay somewhere you are unhappy but do try to make the best of things if you are. My advice dont chicken out and dont be scared if things look difficult.
And one has to remember that the Top Gear / Grand Tour trio have something in common. They didn't end up having the jobs they wanted as children and drifted from one career to another. Clarkson didn't know what he wanted to do after graduation. Hammond wanted to be an architect. May thought he'd be a teacher. If their experience is anything to go by, it'd validate what you said. The charm of James on Top Gear it seems, is counterintuitively the fact he never planned or aspired to be on a show like the revamped Top Gear. I can't think of many situations where a show or job offer would go with the man who wasn't totally enthused about getting the position, but for the dynamic of the 3 presenters on Top Gear, that's exactly what they needed.

About that "what would you do differently" advice for a younger version of yourself: I agree. I would like to elaborate and say "don't listen to people who say you should never give up". My reasoning is that sure, if you know what you want to do and you have a clear goal and mindset of succeeding, by all means, don't give up when things get tough. But if you are doing things because you believe it is expected of you (or you at least once thought you knew this was what you wanted to do) but everything just falls apart time and time again: give up, and give up sooner than you thought you would. I wasted years in university doing something I thought I was destined to do but very apparently I had no interest in when having time off. Meaning, I struggled with something I had no personal interest in, and the only thing that kept me going was 1) I had started this and I'd better finish it, and 2) I can't give up because what sort of a person would I be then. A happier one, I can tell you. If you are studying economics or something, it doesn't go very well and you have no interest in it and what you do in your spare time is more related to sports or cars or the inner workings of the video game industry, do that instead. I thought I had a master plan by combining my studies subjects with my own interests, and that was generally a good idea, but eventually I had such little interest in what I was studying I didn't see it viable anymore. So, give up! Give up in time, don't do what is expected of you solely because you believe it is expected of you, and have the life you wanted for yourself instead. You'll be much happier, waste much fewer years of your youth and life lust, and eventually find yourself the life you were actually meant to have.

Top Gear 2003-15 was fun at the time but I do wish we could move on. I actually think the return of "dull" magazine style TV shows of the 70s-90s would be welcomed very warmly these days, the visual style is very Retrowave and popular whereas Top Gear's kinda obnoxious and doesn't age well; a new "boring" show could have some more interesting content than they used to (remember all those minutes spent on random car accessories you didn't need...?) but that old style should come back. To see a new Top Gear show (doesn't have to use the same name) that was of the Noel Edmonds/Chris Goffey/William Woollard sorta era; Tiff Needell and James May fit in well in that vibe. But spare me Clarkson or anyone like him.
Someone should ask them how come all three are decent enough actors to pull that shit off. That´s my biggest irritation, they were tricking us and it took until some outlandish stuff to happen until most people became aware of the extent of the scripting. I feel fooled.
the closest you get to equality in a car show. Two blokes and an old woman. Still far better than the braindead cover versions, which rely on recycling the format only

A regular and practical car review show would be great. We still have Motorweek fortunately, but they aren't very in depth sometimes.
Someone should ask them how come all three are decent enough actors to pull that shit off. That´s my biggest irritation, they were tricking us and it took until some outlandish stuff to happen until most people became aware of the extent of the scripting. I feel fooled.
He's been an old woman for the last 30 years
He's obviously not comfortable talking about himself.
"I was too unorganized." Proves this video was AI generated!
Haven't seen yahoo related anything in a long time
We hope you enjoyed
This is a genuinely crap interview, the interviewer is dreadful and the thumbnail is hilarious. But James always good value.
What do you mean you were ?
This is completely bollocks! ❤
the closest you get to equality in a car show. Two blokes and an old woman. Still far better than the braindead cover versions, which rely on recycling the format only
ay May is getting old as well 😢
Guaranteed. You never grew up watching Top Gear. LOL.. hence your RECENT DISCOVERY..
What a complete bummer of an interview. Why does EVERY journalist ask the same questions?
Cheese.
No it’s not old fashioned, u were on the edge of controversial
He doesn't look so well. I hope you are ok Mr May.
Yahoo? I thought your company was dissolved.
I love James but if everyone took his advice the industrial world would grind to a rapid halt.
