I work in the ER as an RN. I finished my FNP in Feb 2024. I passed my boards on first try ANCC in May 2024. Im licenced in California. I have applied to some roles (Veteran Assessments and some Nursing homes), that I gained offers on, and some that I didn't gain offers on like home health NP, but when I really thought about it, those roles would not get me the experience that I needed for the specialty that I want. I really want to work in urgent care as an NP and keep my ER nursing job PRN. So I'm researching courses in suturing and orthopedics in order to prepare. I read guidelines and while I'm at work in the ER, I take a look at the patients and see if what I would have done matches what the providers decide to do. This is very helpful, because I'm able to go and ask the doctors why they didnt do x-y-z or what would have happened if they did x-y-z. They are happy to educate. I know that my 4.5 years of ER experience will help, but I want to hit the ground running in urgent care as an NP, not an RN. I've looked and applied to jobs that were not urgent care, because I felt like urgent care facilities would not train me for more than 1-3 days according to what I'm hearing from others in NP forums. However, I am pretty good in the ER as a nurse, and I've done some travel roles which required me to learn fast. My next step is to shadow an NP at some of the urgent cares near me. I want to be in a role within the next 4 months. Do you have any suggestions or more advice of how I should handle this transition?

Hiii!! Wonderful you have ER experience and a board certified FNP; next thing i would recommend is yes to shadow an Urgent care NP to get a feel and flow of practice.. I feel you are ready tho and have the experience.. remember alot of what you will learn is while you are practicing on the job. But i know urgents care will love your ER experience and the fact you care for families plus plus!! Continue to educate yourself while you’re at work, asking questions and reading notes etc. also continue to build rapport with the providers you work with now so they can be your “phone a friend” buddy later when practicing on your own:) .. need to talk some more, can email me “ harrietcnp@gmail “ ✨🙏🏾✨

Hi and welcome ❤️ and yess it will require more schooling of course but you can obtain post-master certification; so you become a women’s health NP then go back for your post master certification in neonatal NP or vice versa, focusing on courses you did not take in either track, it’s usually another 2 year for post masters certification.

If I am able to get a couple of years of primary family under my belt, I want to work inner city health clinic doing STD testing, vaginal exams, men's health and exams, pregnancy testing, etc. I don't know why I am leaning toward doing that.
