I wish popular music was still this good. Oh what we’ve lost!
Thankfully, not all is lost, and new young diehard big band players are still emerging.
Yup. My dad was a jazz bass player, on the road, St. Louis when he got the forwarded draft notice, summer of '41. After 3½ years and five campaigns oversees, he came back to what he called a "deflated spirit." The pre-war brilliance sustained and expanded with the few dedicated greats, e.g. Kenton, but the public wanted their listening safe and bland, "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window," our post-war emblem.
Powerful swing meets bop. Brilliant music.
A little gem…love Stan Levey!😎
Fantastic!
Conte Candoli、Frank Rosolino、Zoot Sims、Stan Levey ら、のちに楽団を巣立ち活躍する顔ぶれを見ることができるのはうれしい限り!
Ah, the ULTRA rare swingin' side of Kenton
Kenton was big on the college scene when I was you. Woody Herman and Maynard Ferguson and Thad Jones also
Shorty Rogers too.
Good stuff
00:49 - How the hell was Frank Rosolino sitting in a whole ass alternate universe Stan Kenton band listening to himself play a solo?
