  • This video answers the age-old question: what do you do when an age-old movie is boring? Turn it off or keep it rolling? I say keep it rollin', and this video explains why.

an interesting point to make! i guess similar could be said for bad modern movies. looking at why they don't work or how they could be improved would make for a similar learning experience.

Yeah ofc! Point was not exclusive to old movies, I singled them out cuz of the stereotype of them being boring and that you’re probably gonna be watching one that other people consider good, so there’d prolly be a lot to learn

I suppose any movie can be "boring" in the sense that there isn't compelling conflict, a Kubrick emotional journey, and/or is just very slow-paced. Overall the movie would be considered "bad".
Still, an element of that movie (typically the cinematography or acting) can still be appreciated.

Completely agree. Appreciated and learned from.
The point of this video is to make you reevaluate the way you watch a movie, towards being open to all elements of the film, even when the main conflict or story isn't engaging you.
It's easier to analyze a film when you aren't caught up in the experience of the story. So old boring movies are perfect for that objective interpretation. Because they are boring (so you're emotionally disconnected) and because they are old (so they stood the test of time and are technically proficient).

I guess any film can be boring no matter how old it is, but that's already subjective, I never understood this mentality that anything old is boring, not only movies, but also music, I'm a classical music and jazz listener and just as I appreciata a good symphony of Mahler or Beethoven or a Miles Davis record I watch movies in a same way trying to appreciate every detail, having learned something about myself or the world, art imitates life, there are times when art can create entertainment, (art for the entertainment), if it is done well there are good results.
I think the reason why nowadays blockbusters have a faster pace reflects the fast times we live in, where young people want to party, colours, explosions, etc... it is sugar for the brain, it's getting worse since with UA-cam shorts and Tik Tok there are young people who can't even watch any video of more than one minute, I read cases of these people by themselves, I think it's all due to a "lack of patience", there are people who take their time to reflect and analyze things better, I think that's why more mature people have more time to process and solve cases, I feel that the audiences of those times tried to understand the story and perhaps did not have time for other things.
That being said, I am a huge young cinephile and I love old movies, especially from the Golden Age of Hollywood, maybe I am an old soul, but the quality of the scripts, acting, directing, photography, etc... rarely I get dissapointed with movies from those days, I know there have always been bad movies, but the best always stands out.
    P. D: I know you get this most of the time, but I recenlty discovered your channel and I like it, there's very good quality content and editing.

If you can’t watch old movies just slowly work back from new movies gradually

I’ve seen movies from the 20’s 30’s and 40’s that are more exciting and interesting than a lot of modern films

Also, it's a bit of a myth that old movies were somehow slow when they were actually edited awfully fast many of them. A flick like Warner Bros' The Walking Dead (1936) with Boris Karloff moves like a friggin' music video so do many '40s films as more snappy dialog became all the rage, etc.

I will take old movies over today’s artificial kid movies. Since when is entertainment connected to mindless action, fast cuts, and forced comedy? I watch movies for emotional experiences, learning something about people or myself, connecting to characters or themes, getting a specific feeling, reflecting, going through a journey etc(sometimes I just want an engaging story). Same reason I listen to music
    Love that Stanley Kubrick quote

You are so misguided and speak in absolutes, you are extremely wrong. If you think that today's movies are kid movies and mindless action then that is only a testament to your inferior movie searching abilities. Just because you failed to find all the awesome mind evoking movies we have today does not mean they don't exist. Please stop makin stupid blanket statements, it just shows how lazy you are and how ignorant the world has become today with people like you

2001 is "boring" in a good way. It's just a work of art in film form.

the movies of today aren't any better, you can pace the movie at lightspeed with tons of explosions, one liners and naked people everywhere and it can be just as boring, i just saw the new resident evil movie and it was extremely difficult to get through, compared to Battle of the Bulge (1965) which i saw two days earlier is a great movie, the direction and choreography of the battle scenes, the characters in the movie actually having something worthwhile to say, a lot of the movie was spent discussing military strategy as opposed to pearl harbor (2001) which was about a love triangle that was interrupted by an attack on a naval base, that movie was boring and is an insult to film making and all of the people who were affected by that attack
in order for a movie to be entertaining it needs to have great directing, acting and writing, the reason why people find old movies boring is because they need to see color and high definition or else they will think it's cheap and low quality, you could also make the same argument for foreign films where you don't know any of the actors and have to read subtitles, i also think that if the actors don't have social media no one is interested, obviously that is impossible for actors in old movies
ever since i saw The Salton Sea (2002) starring Val Kilmer i always watch movies to the end, the first half of the movie was going nowhere and made no sense and because of that was incredibly boring, but i stuck it out and the second half of the movie is where everything was explained and it was taken to the next level, i won't spoil anything but it started out as a movie about a guy whose life is in the crapper and in the second half of the movie is when it turns into a revenge film, it's not a great movie because it had violence and action, it's a great movie because it had character development, actual dialogue, it explained the first half of the movie and it had a definite conclusion, i hate movies with ambiguous endings

🤺☦🇷🇺No, not "old" movies, but movies that were made after the golden era, from the 60s to our time!🤦‍♂️Although Gone with the Wind is boring compared to the high standards of it's time (movies were the coolest youngest and most exciting in the 30s and 40s), compared with the other garbage you showed and all the later movies and what is shown today - it is perfect and exciting 😅
