- The 3 colour rule is a fundamental principle in authentic French Chic Style. I tell you what it is, why it is so important and how to apply it in everyday style situations. A little known fact - until I mentioned it in my Amazon #1 Best Seller 'How To Be Chic & Elegant' no one had heard of the 3 Colour Rule!
There will also be an offer on my extremely popular Wear Colours Like A French Woman course - the 7 colours of French Chic and over 118 style boards to help you create chic outfits time and time again. The coupon code to be given in the livestream will only be available for 48 hours from the date of the livestream.

I had a doctor's appointment recently and the female physician attending me complimented the trench coat I was wearing. This made my day because I wasn't there under the best circumstances and still went out of my way to look presentable. Something that only happened because of your advice. I was previously stuck in a very long rut of thinking along these lines: "It's only clothes"; "what does it matter at this stage"; "I'm not going anywhere special" etc. Due to lifestyle changes, I simply stopped wearing my "good clothes." The upside to this is that when I do wear something nice, it's in great condition because it's well preserved so maybe that deserves some credit? 😀 The trench I wore that day was older than my son and navy blue, by the way. I just wanted you to know that I felt like the universe was trying to tell me something because the doctor specifically used the word "chic." Now I'm convinced I should continue to "shop my closet" and keep taking better care of my appearance and my health. Thanks for all you do to remind us to "wear the clothes we love and love the clothes we wear" unapologetically -- regardless of age.
Merci for sharing such an uplifting experience 😃 I am so happy you have experienced the magic of authentic French Chic 🪄
❤ I have fallen in love with my wardrobe again too and shop my closet on the weekly ❤
@@sandiscalmanini8096 I'm having so much fun with it now because no matter where I go (even if just errands) it's now an excuse for me to make a effort, no matter how small in the way of style.
Navy blue is very classy for every lassie.

You're a poet and you don't know it !
But your feet show it
Because they're
Long fellows
I lived in France five years in the sixties.
Wore mostly darker colors.
Now an old Lady in Florida , I love
Happy colours.
Style is journey, that was beautifully stated Marie-Anne. Thank you for your advice ❤
You are very welcome Rosita x
I love the 3 color rule… just traveled for 9 days in Japan with a small carry on bag (which included my minimal makeup!). Jeans, black slacks, and blue, white and black t shirts. 1 blue sweater and black loafers and blue sneakers. So easy to dress each day! (Oops… forgot to mention one long sleeved oversized shirt… cream with dark blue accents)
It makes packing a lot easier Margot 😃
A tutorial on how to wear scarves and/or jewelry would be appreciated! Merci💛
I have a whole playlist on how to wear scarves Nancy 😃 you can find it on my channel page x
Hello Marie-Anne,
I have heard of the three color rule …….from you. I was shopping recently, looking at a questionable garment and I heard a very clear French “Noh” in my head……if it is not a wow, it is a “Noh”. This happens a lot now when I shop…..😂Thank you.
😃👍

While I taught art in my younger years I always taught the rule of 3. Three colors(color families), placement of 3 in the composition and the use of triangles. We examined famous paintings and sculptures to discover the rule of 3. The students were amazed how well it worked.
Style is Art Thelma 😃👍
That’s very interesting
The same is true in writing! The three-act structure, proportion, etc.-so intriguing!
Yes, I have a degree in history of art, also textile design and the rule of 3 always works!

Thank you for another lovely video, Marie-Anne! I've followed the 3 Color Rule for many years and it never fails. :-) Camel is one of my go-to colors all year long because it pairs so nicely with black or white and always looks elegant. On a completely different note - I am super excited because I just signed up to take beginning French lessons! Can't wait to get started!
Bonjour Jan - camel is a super chic colour 😃 bonne chance 😘
As a US Army Retiree spouse, I never had to clean out closets because we were always moving. Now it is time, too much has accumulated and I am taking out whatever does not fit, what does not suit elevated style, what is not one of my best colors. Marie-Anne, I hear your voice as I am emptying hangers, Non, Non, Non! Occasionally there is a Wow. Thank you!
I hope I am not nagging too much 😃 Honour all Vets and their families 🙏
Merci bien, Marie-Anne de m'aider à ranger mes vêtements d'été. Yesterday, I watched your video on how to weed out summer clothes and began working on my closet. It really motivated me. ❤
That is wonderful Cherie 😃
Your hair is looking lovely, Marie-Anne. Love your weekly livestreams with wonderful styling tips. Merci beaucoup for your helpful answers and advice 🙏🏻🤍
Merci AW glad you enjoy them 😃 it is wonderful to give more time to my French Chic Ladies and not have to worry about the time and editing and worrying about retention rate - I can just give my French Chic Ladies what I love to give them .. my time 🤗
Cynthia here from Houston, TX. I love the 3 color rule. We are traveling to England, Scotland and Ireland. I don’t want to bring more than 1 full sized suitcases for a 3 week trip. This makes it easier.
👍
Oh my Gosh Cynthia! I am in Houston as well, my name is Lana and we are traveling to England, Scotland and France this year in June, also for 3 weeks! 😁 I am planning to do navy and white, and red as an accent pop color since my lipstick is red. Last year we went to Ireland and I did olive khaki and white, with red as an accent again to match my lipstick. 😉
I’m in Houston also! Have used this approach to traveling for years.
I am Elizabeth from the US ST. LOUIS. MO. My wardrobe is black, white & gray. With red & teal accents. I travel for business & keep things simple so I can coordinate my wardrobe for a week. Simple. Everything goes together. Quality over quantity. Capsule wardrobe before it was called a capsule wardrobe.
Sounds very French Chic Elizabeth 😃
Hello from another St. Louisan.
Bonjour, thank you so much for your wonderful videos fantastique. Saying hello from England
👋
Around 50 years ago I hosted an American lady studying embroidery in the UK. She dressed beautifully from a small suitcase - she had a strict three colour rule. Black, white and red. She had short white hair. From her suitcase she could create many styles without spending hours thinking what to wear. I now have short white hair and black, red and white all look good on me too.
A wonderful lesson ion the 3 Colour Rule Lorna 😃
I MISSED IT LIVE...BUT HERE I am now! 🎉❤😊
My mother called me, my puppies needed to go outside and my little granddaughter all required my immediate atte😂ntion the moment I got home from work! ❤🎉😊

Marianne I love the highlights in your hair.

I think my dear in these troubling times we living in I believe we need to work on our wardrobes that flatter us amidst all the noise of the world. It is great for our mental health and give us extra confidence and self love although I try to love all people.
I like to wear black and white, but use colorful silk scarves for my "wow" and love of versatility.
Excellent Debra 😃
Your techniques are informative. Love the French chic style. Envy & Love♥️ your closet room. Such marvelous space for art.
Merci MJ 🤗
I noticed you have a string of pearls on. I’d like to wear pearls with my shirt blouses, but my kids keep telling me that’s frumpy. Please advise Isabel.
Pearls are in this season 😃 watch here ua-cam.com/video/yP9gum9jGwo/v-deo.html 😘
Haven’t watched for a few weeks, so maybe it isn’t new: I love your new hair color! VERY flattering!
I learned so much … such an inspiration …
You are very welcome Mary 😘
I love your styling technique and your dressing room. So organized and lovely and your hair style looks so nice on you. Keep up the wonderful videos 😊
Merci Diana 🤗
Madame, I truly appreciate your good fashion advice. I went through my wardrobe and discovered dozens and dozens of appropriate 3 colour match possibilities. Donc je n'ai besoin de rien de plus. Merci beaucoup!
Excellent Ingrid 😘
Bonjour Ladies!
Lovely print blouse! I'd wear it with dark pants in winter or night time; and with grey pants in summer or daytime.
😃👋
I love the colors and soft tones in your hair in this video, it looks lovely on you!❤
Merci Tammy x
Helpful information - thank you. I like to choose either dark neutral + dark neutral + pop of colour, dark neutral + light neutral + pop of colour or light neutral + light neutral + pop of colour.
Great video Marie- Anne, I missed the live but thoroughly enjoyed this when i caught up. Your advice is so helpful and confidence boosting. So hello from Oxford UK. Have a great weekend 😊
Merci Sharon 😘
Thank you for all of your ideas and recommendations. Watching in Chesapeake, Virginia, USA ❤

Good morning from Hertfordshire UK x
👋
Hi Marie Anne, from Sydney, AustraliaI love catching up with your live broadcasts, and listening to all the Q&A sessions. I absolutely follow the two colour rule, sometimes with a pop of colour as you suggest eg hand bag or scarf or even lipstick! I have been a fan of red lips for a long time and was delighted to find that you do too! Iamm gradually building a capsule wardrobe in receding colours, mainly navy, grey and black plus red and white and beige neutrals. I have started to wear my jewellery again, now I have heard you talk about what to wear with what and not to ' over gild the lily' Also scarves, sun glasses and hats- not all at once!!! You have definitely put back the fun into dressing! Jx
So glad you are having fun with your style J 😃
Always so encouraging. Thank you
😘
Copperas Cove Texas USA greetings. Love your accent and funny presentation. Rosalinda
😘
We love you, elegance guru❤

Hello from Tennessee! I cant wait to hear about this subject.
I missed the live but found this just now. I wear blue a lot I am drawn to that color but I never combine it with any other colors but black. I live in Alaska so it's a whole different thing here when it comes to dressing. It's very casual and we have a lot of weather going on all the time. We either have snow or rain or mud so footwear is hardly dressy. I have aqua boots for this climate I love.
Blue and black can look very chic Nancy 😃
Thank you for your live, which I just watched. I will be paying attention to your advice on this, and I’m certain it will help me with my style.
😘
I grew up in England but always liked the French style. Now in my seventies I love wearing just two or three colors. I totally agree with you. Wonderful video. Thank you.
You are very welcome Letitia x
Camel + aubergine is stunning.
I like the highlights in your hair - looks very nice😊
Merci Yasmina 😘
I second that ❤
Hello & Bon Jour, writing you from Northern Virginia, just southwest of Washington, DC.
👋
Hi there! Just catching up. This answered a number of questions for me. So enjoyable!
So glad it helped Anne 😃
Missed the live a couple of hours ago but here I am from New Mexico. Great video as always ♥️
👋😘
I wear glasses and struggle to find earrings other than studs that look good with my light blonde short hair. Can you do a video on the size and style of earrings and glasses. I love to watch your videos and love the French way of dressing. Thank you
I will see what I can do Esme x
Marie Anne . I need to thank you , thank you , so much for doing these video’s . And that I was / fortunate to see it , & clicked on it . I learned so much from you . I have been drowning in too many clothes , for years . But didn’t know , / what’s in style , & what works for my body & age 73 yrs old . . What to keep / what to get rid of .I’ve been spending hours now / getting rid of clothes that just don’t work with this plump ( size 12) 73 ur old body . And taking ur fashion advice . My friends give me there hand me down , because I don’t like shopping or no time for such . I am , right now , smiling from ear to ear . With 6 bags for goodwill . Your video was a blessing . My ??? Is what do I do with all these hangers 😂& plastic shoe boxes . I even put together some outfits / you showed / and I looked Wow ! 👍🏻😀I have 5 new outfits for this week &2 with belts . 😄😄😄😄
You are very welcome Marie 🤗 maybe donate the hangers and shoe boxes to goodwill as well - they may need them with all the items you have generously donated 😃
Agree and like all these suggestions. I'd like to see something showing people how to mix prints. Hint: if prints are in the same color family, and one print is so small that it "reads" like one color (*a small black and white check can read as grey for example) that is interesting. It's not that easy to do or possible, but when it is done, it's cool. One has to think it through but to pull it off is great.
It ios very tricky indeed Georgette but done well it is wonderful to behold. I saw a photo of Kenzo once and his outfit had several prints together - it was magnificent ❤️
Hello from Toronto! Thanks for the timely advice. I am joining girlfriends for dinner tonight. I am wearing black trousers, and a black and white striped Lily silk shirt. I am now adding a pop of red with my bag and lipstick.
Perfect Paula - have a great time x
Aloha from Hawaii. I’m happy to join Keziah
If it's not a wow it's a no! That has become my new mantra when shopping for clothes. Thank you Marie-Anne
😃👍
Hello from Washington state, in the US
👋
I just bought your book from Amazon, it is full of good advice! To be honest, most of it was taught to us as "young ladies" in the 60s, but these rules seem to have disappeared in the UK since then and no longer taught. In consequence, there are more cheap clothes out there, more choice than ever before, but women in the UK seem to look worse than they ever did. I go to other countries in Europe and it is not so. The French and Italians are so smart and put together. The Scandinavians are more casual, but still look so thoughfully casual, not scruffy. I feel the worst offenders are here in the UK and the Americans I see travelling here and in Europe. As in most other things, (food etc) we seem to have followed the American lead and lost sight of what is important in life. Am I being unfair?!
Merci for becoming a reader as well as a viewer Trisha 😃
I'm American and I agree with you that many Americans are poorly dressed, although the higher the income, it seems the better they are dressed.
Never heard of the rule, but it makes sense.
Bonjour Marie-Anne from California! I often have you in my head picking outfits, "What would Marie-Anne say about these colors?" 😅 As the light gets bright here much of the year, I have a harder time wearing black, so your French chic rules help me with my choices. Thank you for this. 😊
Lovely summary of 3 colors rule! Fairport, ny
USA
😘
Very helpful, Marie Anne. I'm thinking of Iris Apfel whom I always admired for her uncompromising confidence and it makes me smile. The enigma of personal style: if I forced myself to dress like her I would look like a complete idiot and hate it; yet it looked great on her.
Iris was indeed a tour de force Mieczyslawa 🙏
Merci Marie-Anne. I'm here late again as usual. Great video, yes I have heard of 3 color rule.I always try to keep it simple and classy, quality not quantity. Great advice through the video. You look wonderful as always. My colors are mainly navy, black and white and sometimes a highlight of red, also have some gray and army green clothes. I found from a second hand shop In Gold Coast beautiful white jeans with label Victoria Hill at AUD 5.50 and Fabrizio Lenzi black and white Marniere at AUD5 so a perfect French Chic outfit for 10 bucks, not bad. Just to mention that at last our weather is getting a bit cooler , nights about 16 C and days still 27 C but it's an improvement for the hot and sticky weather. I really loved your New Year Casual Outfits short video, lots of beautiful navy cloths, you looked so fabulous and perfect. You're doing a great job with these videos. Love you and everything in your channel.❤❤
Merci Tuija - those were great finds you made 😃
I feel chic in 2- 3 colors. I naturally choose this. Never taught. American. Look nice in brown skirt and blazer with muted pink or pale lavender. I try to use darker shoes and purse in winter. I have navy as well and black. I wear scarves on head. Try to choose match to accent color.
San Francisco here!
Thrilled me with your style😊

I sort of did the three color rule by default. But, I'm
An Artist and have always loved mid century and 60s mod. Love the color blocking from the 60s mod era. But... sometimes.... I have always loved Pucci prints. Had a vintage Pucci blouse a long time ago when I started collecting vintage (and was a size 6). It was odd because most of my outfits were from the 40s and 50s because they were so incredibly well tailored and looked so fab on. And I had a very nice Art Deco collection that sadly got lost in a move and I have only a smattering of those pieces and it just made me feel bed. So now my place is more Eams-ish with a pop here and there of something 60s mod that works. Back to Pucci... when I was a size six. I am now a 18w and it's miserable trying to find nice things. I found a great Pucci style blouse, very high quality silk and it was on sale and I got dazzled and had to have it. But wearing it. Sot the effect I was going for. It has black... I've tried it with black trousers... non. Leather trousers... if I was even a size 10 it probably would have worked... but... no. White straight tailored jeans... no. White duck... no. One of the pastels in it... oh no no no... I look like one of the Golden Girls. NO. So I leaned not to let myself get dazzled by an item like that unless it perhaps a scarf. Even following the rule on those doesn't always work either. Gave it to a girl in my building that's a size 8 and she belts it and wears it as a dress and it's darling. Cleaning my closet out now. I feel better listening to what you have to say. I already have a lot of navy,g grey, black, white, cream, dark brown and some rust. Getting rid of the odd stuff that just doesn't work. It is very liberating. Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful advise.
Style is indeed Art Liz and all the same principles apply 😃
Omg. Anything else ?? 😊😊😊
Your hair looks great

Bonjour! Merci.

Hello from Connecticut
👋
Very helpful as always. This is actually how i was dressing unconsciously - maybe the French style has rubbed off on the English 😂. I don't tend to wear anything too busy or floral. Thanks so much. X
😃👍
I have never understood wearing different prints together. It is so jarring to the eye! Reminds me of Pippie Longstocking, lol... My mom taught me to dress as you say and wear a print and then pick one color out of the print to use for the rest of outfit. She was part French so it is no wonder.
Mixing prints can be done Gwc but it takes a good eye and a deft touch 😘 much safer to do as your mother says 👍
